A friend's got an old pressure tank we're (actually he needs a pit, and I get to learn to weld) turning into a pit this weekend. Farking thing is 48x24 and about 1/8" thick steel. Gonna build something that looks like a hondo, but it's gonna have room for 2 levels of racks, and 2 doors on it.
Bill- any ideas for the drain mod?
I'll take some pictures if I remember the camera.

Sounds like a good time!
I read from an experienced Pit builder that v shaped plates (under the grill racks) slanted towards one end with a dam and pipe to the outside works great for a drain MOD.

Check the old site. Probably 40% or more of their total posts are on the drain mod.

I just finished my drain on my trailer mounted pit. Used a steel threaded flange welded to the floor, drilled a 2" hole in floor, added a small steel pipe nipple and threaded on a 2" brass ball valve.
I have pics but can't post them untill monday.

All these serious drain comments, and all I was doing was trying to see what would get Bill to off into left field. :)
The pit's coming along well, we've got the stand and wheels on it, and we're doing the doors this week.

David, hope you took some pix. I'm looking to pickup all the info I can before next fall. That's when construction of the KC Special begins.

For now we just capped the 2" nipple... those big ball valves are spendy.

Bought mine at Menards. Cost about $26. Local plumbing supply house was charging $58 for the same size.
