View Full Version : Do you like Slaw on your pulled pork Samawich?

Brothers,
In Virginia, all the local Q joints had mayo based Slaw on your Q unless you told them not to put it on and then you would get a "funny look".
When I went to Chicago for "higher education", you would get a "funny look" if you ordered Slaw on your pork BBQ samawich.
So lets take a vote.
With or without slaw?

Never had it like that until Bash 2. Now I don't want it any other way. Well, I'm still known to make a sandwich disappear even if the slaw's out  but I much PREFER it with slaw!

Like Neil, I never had it this way until recently, now I don't cook the butt 'til I got the slaw, and some big sturdy buns. Like the pork plain but I get plenty of samples while pulling and cleaning.

Question: so do you still sauce the pork with the slaw, or is the slaw considered your sauce?
Oh, sauce, by all means!
I like it on the pork, or not! Depending on the sauce available I sometimes prefer the slaw on the side. Pork around here is always served with slaw but usually as a side.
We eat pulled pork as a main dish, often. Especially when doing low-carb! Just show me the pulled pork and I'll make the slaw with Splenda :D

i know for absofarkin sure, i bought 5lb tubs of slaw and tater salad. As well as big packages of soft buns and hoagie rolls. aint no way i'd be making butts without slaw. i dont always put it on a sandwich. Sometimes I like the sandwich just soggy and sloppy from pork and sauce. But i know i willALWAYS have it nearby...
B2 we had a whole cooler with stuff we didnt touch.. Bill Remeber that bigass Potpie?? And we never got to makin the cobblers either.
Willkat wasnt looking for sides, they were in a cooler without beer. He was only lookin in the beer coolers. :)

Actually, Phil couldn't stare the "leftover" pork loin in the face! :D
He warmed up a few slices, took one bite, and said "Here, you eat this! I can't stand to look at it." :D
This was the large pork loin Bill did with the cherry wood and I think his infamous cherry juice from the box. Whatever, it was outstanding! Then Phil and I both had a huge bowl of slaw each while sitting in the family room staring off into space. Long weekend!!

I was about to start a new thread and make it a poll about slaw or no slaw.
But after a quick search, I found this thread on the 6th and last page. Big Al asked this question 3 years ago.
Mods, if you want to break this off and make it a poll thats cool. Otherwise, lets bring this old thread up-to-date.
Do you like slaw on your pulled or minced pork sammich?
Like Big Al said, in VA, they will plop some slaw on your sammich unless you state that you want it "without".
I personally am not a big slaw or mayo guy. So I take mine without slaw.
What say you?

So what is this vinegar based slaw recipe? I love mayo., and have had only that kind of slaw...
Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 head cabbage -- chopped fine
1/2 large yellow onion -- chopped fine
1 cup celery -- chopped fine
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons basil vinegar
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
3 tablespoons malt vinegar
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce, superior grade
1/2 tablespoon nuoc mam
2 tablespoons brown mustard seeds -- crushed
black pepper
crushed dried tabasco peppers
OR
finely chopped jalapenos, to taste
Chop cabbage fine and soak in water and ice in the refrigerator for
one hour. Drain. Place a small cloth towel in the bottom of a bowl.
Line the bowl with paper towels and put the cabbage in. Chill for
another one to two hours, meanwhile mixing all the remaining
ingredients together. Bring out the cabbage, remove the towels, and
combine cabbage thoroughly with other ingredients. Let warm to room
temperature, and serve.

Here's another one:
ingredients
1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
6 tablespoons sugar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard
1 teaspoon celery seeds
1 medium cabbage (about 1 1/4 pounds), thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
preparation
Combine vinegar, sugar, oil, mustard and celery seeds in nonaluminum medium saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and dressing comes to boil. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper. Cool completely.
Combine cabbage, onion and green pepper in large bowl. Add dressing; toss to coat. Cover; refrigerate until cold, tossing occasionally, at least 2 hours. (Can be made
1 day ahead. Cover; keep refrigerated.) Serves 8.

Mine is made with apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider Vinegar for me too, instead of white distilled.
I like vinegar slaw, but most of my eating audience prefers mayo-based, so that is what we do most of the time.
Slaw on sandwiches, most definitely. But, since I low carb most of the time, I usually skip the bun and therefore the slaw becomes a side.

Brauma you must have had a bad "Miracle Whip" or Dukes experience with mayo as a child. Never seen a farker turned off by mayo as bad as you. I remember this being brought up before and we talked a bout the "COCK OF THE WALK" resturant in Nashville and their slaw. I love a good slaw on the side, on top, underneath, on my sammich. As long as its not bitter. I said last time this came up, the secret to a good creamy slaw is a hint of white pepper. Man its good.

I usually eat mine on the side, well about 90% of the time. It depends on how good the pork and slaw is. I had a pulled pork sando for lunch today. Lightly sauced served on a toasted garlic buttered bun. It was fantastic. Oh yeah that was with our third from last place pork from this weekend, but that is a whole different story.
