Thinking about grilling some brats tomorrow. I have been soaking them in beer(cheap) for about 15min. before the go on the grill.
Anyone have any other way they grill them?
Thanks,
Jack

Jack, use the SEARCH function at top right of this page to find posts with brats or bratwurst in them. I have seen some good posts on the site that might help you out.

grill? Beer? 15min?
Okay, heres the secret Wisconsin recipe.
Get crock pot. set on high. put in brats. fill with beer. slice up an an onion or two. mix. cover.
when is come to a boil (hour or 2) remove lid slightly (half on) so you don't get boil over.
Cook for like 5 hours or something.
turn on grill.
Remove brats from croc and put in hot grill.
brown them. maybe 2-3 min per side.
best of both worlds. Beer brats with a grill finish.
French roll and Ketchup and enjoy (no kraut for this kraut IMO)

my recipe:
jar of sabretts onions(the onions the hot dog vendor uses).
small bottle of franks
6 pack of schafer :)
Mix franks and sabretts together, add beeer unitl its thin enough to boil.
add bratts simmer about 45 minutes on low, then grill for a minute or 2. Serve with them onions..
OMG, i need to have them NOW.... hate when that happens.

Thanks for the advice guys. The only kind I can find below the Mason Dixion line is Johsonville.
The first time I had one, was a company BBQ in Appleton, Wis. I told the cook this is biggest hotdog I've ever seen. He said, that ain't no hotdog, it's a brat!!!! I've been hooked evet since!

I prefer Johnsonville over all brands that I've tried. Are there brands specific to your areas?

yes my young padawan... put brats in pot... cover with beer... then add one more (can be cheap beer)... ad a bunch of onions, garlic, jalapenos, pickles, franks red hot, tequila, worschty sauce, horseradish, etc. to the mix and boil them through... then let them sit in the stew while you fire up the grill... take from pot to grill, then put back in the pot... put on bun, top with brown mustard, saurkraut, and onions from the stew... yum...

We buy Jonshonville, since it's what's in the store here. It's about the best we can get on the west coast.
But... if you don't mind waiting a week or two, Usingers in Milwaukee is far better than anything I've found in the store. We order from them a couple of times a year from their website.
And... Bill's recipe sounds right on the money, although we usually just simmer em on the stove till there isn't much beer left and then toss them on the grill right away. Who wants to wait 6 hours for a brat. That, and we don't serve ketchup with our brats. Only brown mustard, the kind with the mustard seeds, like Plochmans.

Johnsonville does happen to be a pretty decent brat. If I am in a normal grocery store, that is all I would think about buying.
However..... Check into any local butcher shop and you just might be surprised at the old family recipe thay have.
Oh.... and spam sucks!

who waits 6 hours for a brat David? I do. I start them at 7am, so that gives me plenty of drinking time till we eat
I love Sundays.
When is it okay to drink on a Sunday? When the churchbells ring. I love 7:30am mass

Bigdog, get a can of SPAM, slice and grill on both sides while smoking, it's great saused or plain. However, there is danger involved, the danger is that you might like it. :D

Al, I am not changing anything.
How did SPA*M enter into this Grilled Bratwurst thread?
Parot brought it up then Bigdog, I just responded in a reply. Spam is food and I grill it, fits the Q-talk requirements!

Al and I sure don't agree about spam, but we do agree that the Bandera is a great cooker of brats. Smoke them in the vertical chamber, and then finish them off on the grill in the firebox. My son always brings out a hot dog or two to cook for him in the firebox when I am smoking. This is the main reason that I chose the Bandera over a horizontal smoker...so I could smoke and grill at the same time, or just grill.

This thread was just scrubbed, as requested. Big Dog, you lost a post or two, not about Bratwurst though, or food related.
Sorry Jack.

Yep, same reason I chose the Bandera. And we don't have to agree on SPAM, we like it grilled and that is all that matters. Should you ever to try an experiment for grilling SPAM, here is a link for some Grilled SPAM Recipes. The site has many other recipes for spam.

Under "Menue Ideas", click on Spam Recipes and when the page comes up then search for "grilled spam".

Best Brats in the whole wide world come from Schwann's. Boil them in beer for 10 minutes or so and then right to the grill to finish them. The only bad thing is they are a summer only item so you have to stock up on them in the fall to have some for the winter.

Is that place local to your area, or are they located in more than one place?

Bill
Schwann's is a home delivery business that is prevalent at least out here in the western states (I thought they were nationwide?). They started out with ice cream and now they deliver almost everything to your door. Our guy comes by twice a month. Their products are top notch. I had a buddy that owns a ranch in the middle of Nevada, the mail and UPS delivery stops 35 miles from their house. The Schwann's man comes to their door. If you can locate them in your area they have good food and great service.

You're kidding. The Schwann's man delivers out in the middle of the pasture in Wyoming?
the schwans dude can fill your freezer ina heartbeat with all sorts of stuff--don't buy much of the meat(polish sausage is good) but there pies and ice cream are great!

I am not lying a bit. I was on a ranch 45 miles from the nearest town in northern WY. The Schwann's man came twice a month and if he saw you in the pasture or hayfields he would drive out to you, otherwise you leave a note for what you need and money and they will put the food in your freezer.

I miss Ringo......
Johnsonville is good, Usingers is good. In Milwuakee, we can get all kinds of brats. I boil my brats in beer and onions for 10 minutes, that's plenty of time. You can also put them in a Nesco filled with kraut and cook 'em all day.

Schwans = GREAT BRATS
I have not found a bad thing from them yet. They come by my place once a week. A little pricey but excellent food.
