Being a teacher, I don't have a lot of time to eat lunch, so I eat in my room. I nuke my daily fix of Q in the Micro. and chow down while reading this site.

Yesterday, the janitor that cleans my room walks up to me and says, "Do you eat BBQ every day?"

I said, "Sure do!"

He then says, "How can you afford it?"

To which I reply, " I own a smoker and cook it myself."

Now he says, "Sure smells good!"

We get into a conversation about smoking and types of meats and he asks me if he gave me some meat, would I smoke it for him. I reply that I would be glad to. It is the least I can do for this poor guy who has to suffer cleaning up after me and smelling my Q. I have more that a few students that say the same thing about the smell.

My favorite one is a boy that says, "You sure are lucky!" One of these days I will invite him to lunch too.

You sure can make lots of friends if you Q (this site is another example).

My wife says that I ought to smoke meat this summer to make some extra money. Have any of you tried this and how much did you charge?

Take your costs and multiply by at least a factor of three. With pulled pork, brisket, etc. I usually consider 3-4 oz a serving - so three servings per pound of finished meat.

Most places around here get about $6 for a "dinner": meat, bean, slaw, bread. Drinks are extra.

Ribs go for $18 to $20 per slab (St. Louis style spares) or $9-11 per half slab. Babyback dinners go for about $11-12 per dinner. Ribs "dinners" are about $6-8 bucks.

That's assuming you actually want to make your costs back -- do it cheaper and you'll lose your A$$ :D

My dad always did it for half. ex:If some one brought him 10 slabs of bacon, we ended up with 5 of them.

That's fair, simple and keeps you somewhat more distanced from the potential hassels of licenses, food inspections, IRS, etc.

Greg and Mark,
Thanks for your imput as well. I think sharing 50-50 is a good idea for when you don't want to make money and are doing it with a friend.
