of course open to spectators. In all honesty probably one of the better contests to come to do to the fact that alot of brethren attend so u can stop by and see how things are done. There is alot of joking about the contest but everyone does take it serious. Stop by. We will be there. Saturday Mid afternoon to evening is a good time to see people. Sunday is usually hectic with turn ins.

Why would YOU ask?

If you're a Brethren, then you're never a spectator. You're family.

Sorry still new to all of this. I am trying to understand the family like nature. I figure this is like an masked dysfunctional family. You can't all like each other. There has to be some disharmony. lol

I also noticed they only had a few paid confirmed. Is that common? Do people wait til the last minute or is there a reason so few have confirmed?

Sending in my app today. Looking forward to my first competition. Especially looking forward to the chili comp. I was in one other chili comp and we had to make like 8 gallons of chili to feed to all the spectators. I had never made that much chili and ended up burning it a little bit, which as you know spoils the whole batch. Wasn't my best day. So, I'm looking forward to redeeming myself.

Also, looking forward to the challenge of cooking all that bbq on one WSM and one kettle. I will probably go nuts by the end, but hopefully, I'll at least put out something edible.

I guess you haven't been to Sayville the past two years. The only difference was about 10 mph on the wind. Battling the elements during a comp makes the experience of it all that much more fun. Good luck trying to win that trophy....

Hi,

For those that are interested and are competing at WilliePallooza, Main Street Meats in Farmingdale has the following prices on comp meat:

Kobe Brisket Flats, pretrimmed - $4.99

spareribs (jerseys) - $1.99 lb.

pork butts - $1.69

chicken thighs - $.99

If quality of meat is a concern, give them a shot. They have great stuff. Ask for Lee and tell them it's for the contest.

BTW, they will trim meat upon request for those lazy cooks out there (like me).

I sure hope it isn't raining like that. I'll still wing it no matter what, but I'm really hoping for some good weather.

Does anyone know where to get a plastic sign at? Just one of those signs to hang from my canopy. I live in Farmingdale, NY, so I'm looking for a place not too far away. I figured some of y'all may have gotten signs made, so you might know of a place.

Got some more questions from a newbie:

1. What time should we show up that Saturday? I mean like a range.

2. Will there be water available? Like a spigot or something.

3. Is there a place to dump old water? Like if we washed stuff and need to get rid of the water.

4. What do people do with their hot smoker when it's all done. For example, I turn stuff in, it gets judged, I win the awards, but my smoker still has a bunch of hot coals in it. I assume it would be dangerous to just throw that back into my truck and ride down the highway like that. Just wondering what other people do.

1. Time will be announced when the cooks packet arrives via e-mail. If I remeber correctly you can show up for this event Saturday morning around 8:00.
2. Water is available, bring a hose splitter and at least 50' of hose.
3. It's recommended that you bring a bucket for your waste water. I believe there's a drain you could dump into.
4. You will need to bring a ash can to dump your hot coals into. Home Depot has the small metal can with lid for a good price.

Hi!

Will has been kind enough to allow WilliePallooza to host a food drive for the girls that were trying to run Rock Hunger. Hopefully there won't be a hurricane at WilliePallooza.

There will be Girl Scouts on hand to help the teams out in a similar fashion to what was going on at The Battle of the BBQ Brethren with the college students.

If you would be interested and willing to help, it would be wonderful if you could bring some non-perishable food stuffs to the competition. The Girl Scouts will be collecting the food and delivering it to a local food pantry.

If you can help out, please let me know.

Thanks!

I don't know if any of you remember, but there used to be a member of the Brethren named Steve. He informed me that Island Harvest will pick up cooked food. I had been concerned that we would only be able to donate non-perishable foods.

Due to Sleds insights, I contacted Island Harvest and they said that they would send out a truck on Sunday to pick up cooked food if we had any.

Before I ask them to do so, I need to know if anyone is willing to cook an extra pork butt (or something else).

It would help out greatly if you could post here and let me know if you are able/willing to do so.

Real men don't need canopies! I won't cook in a Long Island contest unless I'm standing in six inches of cold and muddy and the rain is filling my turn-in boxes faster than I can bail them out!

Unless, of course, I'm standing in a mile-wide blacktop parking lot in 112 degree weather under a blazing sun without a cloud in the sky and we haven't had water since yesterday. That's OK, too.

Would 7lb bags of ice delivered to your lot for $4.00 each be a reasonable deal?

Eric

Are they doing this for a fundraiser? If so, I don't mind.

Ok, here is my last song and dance for the Girl Scouts food drive.

If you are able to bring some food for the food drive (either a pork butt to cook and donate or cans of food), you will receive raffle tickets for some really cool donations that the girls will be raffling off.

This is a really great cause and I appreciate Will's allowing the girls to do this.

Congrats to every one that got a call!

Will,
Thank you for all of your hard work putting these comps together. You really know how to make them fun.

Eric,
Please pass our "Thanks" to the girl scouts for the banners. They are awesome!

I had a blast. This was my first comp so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was happy to see that everyone I met was very friendly and helpful. And I learned a lot about what to do and what not to do for future comps. Can't wait for Sayville in October.

Well then, I'll just start putting the stuff back in my truck tonight.

Seriously though, I might have an idea to do something for the next one, but I may need a little lead time, so the sooner we know when, the better. And we all know what happens when I get ideas.

Hi Willie!!
Sorry I am so late posting this but finishing all of the girl scout paperwork in between school & work kept me busy.

THANK YOU!!!
Thanks to all of the competitors who were so very generous & patient with our raffle selling and food collection. You have made a huge difference in the lives of our Long Island neighbors in need!!
Thanks to the competitors who were so kind as to guide us through our first competition! There is so much to learn and you were very gracious to take the time to advise us!
A HUGE THANK YOU to WILLIE!!!!!!
Without Willie's help we would not have been able to complete our project, since our first attempt last August got rained out!
Thank you all for being so welcoming and helping us out like you did! You guys are a lot of fun! We had a blast, 'queing, hanging out and getting to meet so many of you! Hopefully I will be able to enter more competitions in the future!
