View Full Version : developing a pictorial guide for scrounging free wood
Solidkick recently posted numerous close-up pictures of various smoking woods here:
http://www.bandera-brethren.com/modules.php?set_albumName=Wood&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
It would be appreciated if other brothers could help by taking similar close-up pictures of other wood types they like to use. Be sure to get the grain as well as the bark.
Then, I will develop a PDF guide with pictures and such for those who could use it for wood scrounging.

Mark
Talked to Phil for a minute last night in L.A. Just got around to how to set up a folder in the files section when the call ended (something about being lost looking for a Cuban restaurant)
So the folder will be added to the files section in the near future.
Great idea, by the way.

I've already set up an album in the "Tools Of The Trade" folder. So if you are wanting a separate folder just for the wood, it should be easy to move.
Bill,
BTW, there is an empty album there that I could not remove, any chance you have rights to delete it? Don't know if it was one you tried to create, or if I doubled up this morning learning how to make the album.
Thanks!

Extra Album is now history.
The folder I was trying to set up was in the Files section.
Never thought to open one in Photos.

Thanks to those of you doing the leg work for this wood ID guide. I am a professional woodworker, hand me a board and I can probably tell you what it is, but if it is still a tree or a log I'm not nearly so proficient. Should prove helpful to scroungers and will be a good guide for all to use to prevent paying a premium price for smoking wood and possibly getting junk. thanks guys your time and effort are appreciated.

Don't forget leaves and fruit. They are extremely helpful in identifying wood. I don't think we need photos of apples and cherries though.

After all the logistical crap (measure, draw, bid, sell, order, unload) is done, yeah I get to be Norm. See "interesting new thread here" in Cattle Call.
Resources for identifying trees by leaf, fruit and/or bud pics abound on the Internet. Once we get pics of chunks and/or splits showing both the grain and bark, I will add leaf fruit and bud pics as well.
Here are some of these resources:
