View Full Version : Yardbird contains MSG?

Hi guys, I paid almost $20 for some Yardbird rub that I can't use. MSG is listed as the 6th ingredient. Sure wish there would have been a disclaimer on the Spicewine site warning us it contained MSG. I wouldn't have purchased it knowing it had MSG in it.

Do all your rubs contain MSG?

I can understand your frustration but in fairness to Spice I've never seen any BBQ website post such a warning.

I bet 10 to 1 yes. I use msg in my rubs.

It may be that I'm naive about the use of MSG in rubs although I've purchased rubs from Sucklebusters, Bib Bob Gibson, Obie-Cue, Everglades, Cookshack, Bad Byron, Lotta Bull, Traeger and others and none of them listed MSG in the ingredient list.
I would have thought MSG to be disallowed in competition BBQ but I openly admit I'm naive about these things.

Hi Assassin, Do you sell your rub to the general public?

Welcome Scooter...

Please go to Cattle Call and Introduce yourself as time permits.

Just a suggestion... if you have an aversion to MSG due to health concerns, it's probably in your best interests to always ask with the vendor or manufacturer of any food product you have interest to purchase if the product contains MSG.

As you noted, not all of them do, but MSG is commonly found in many BBQ seasonings.

Good Luck !!

Scooter, once you get logged in and settled, there are some great threads on here around MSG, Rubs, and various other ingredients as well...

Feel free to check them out with the search, or I am sure we can point you to them.

All sorts of Brines, Cures, Rubs, Injections are available to use in comp. BBQ.
Enjoy the read, there is lots of good info

Mrs scooter won't eat anything with MSG in it and she now knows Yardbird has it so It's pretty useless to me. I don't get headaches from MSG but do get very thirsty and drink lots of water after consuming food with MSG in it. Chinese food is where I usually come in contact with it. I do know there are people that are alergic to MSG but then there's not much out there that people aren't alergic to. I'll have to be more vigilant about inquiring with future rub vendors as was suggested.

Thank you Todd for the refund offer. I'll take you up on that. PM will be sent shortly. Will you want me to ship it back to you? The shipping to get it to me cost $11 so if it costs me $11 to return a $7 item I think I'll just cut my losses. I did open it to taste it then checked the ingredients list to see in what order salt was listed which is when I noticed the MSG so it's an opened container with a wet fingertip inserted if that makes a difference to you. :icon_smil

MilitantSquatter: Will do! Thanks.

HoDeDo: I've tried doing site searches but I get told I don't have the subscription to do that? Might be a subscription issue? Or a user issue? If I can trouble you to provide a couple MSG threads it would be appreciated.

Anyone: I take it since the use of MSG in rubs seems to be prevalent, it's use in KCBS (or other) comps is allowed? Just seems to me that the use of a chemical flavor enhancer should not be allowed in comps. Just my naive opinion.

Since you asked:

Yes, KCBS and pretty much any cooking venue allows MSG. Why wouldn't they? Just like they allow , say, NaCl crystal, which is another useful "chemical flavor enhancer".

If your better half feels she can not have MSG, I understand the predicament you are in, but you should not pretend MSG is something that it is not. As you said, I think that position is indeed "naive".

Welcome aboard, there's lots to learn.

I'll send it to anyone for the cost of shipping it but chambersusc gets first dibs. DISCLAIMER: I stuck my wet fingertip in it. If that doesn't bother you, it's yours. I can always just toss out the top layer and toss it. I doubt my germs can travel through rub very fast. :)

Thanks Todd, PM sent with requested information.

There is a site-specific Google search box at the bottom of every page that is available to anyone. The built-in forum search is available to subscribers. The info on subscriptions is here...

A discussion on the pros or cons of MSG doesn't belong in Todd's forum. If you want to continue this discussion please take it to Q-Talk (or competition for competition-specific use). We have, however, beat this dead-horse to a pulp in the past

I don't think it has to do with comps. it's more a personal preference. I don't buy or use seasonings with MSG, and the rubs I've had blended in the past I didn't use a "base rub" from the co-packer because most of them have MSG in them. Me personally MSG gives me the dry mouth and an irritable stomach if you catch my drift:oops:

Scooter brought up the topic of allowing MSG at competitions. My comment was a response to his question.

I don't use a "base rub", either except for Paprika and Chili Powder which are technically blends.

no sarcasm intended but you might want to consider making your own rub if the ingredients in all these rubs you buy bother you or have an adverse affect
I htink salt is pretty much a main ingredient in most of of them

Scooter,

You may want to look at your bottles again. I was just at one of our local BBQ stores and looked at a few of the products you mentioned. Lotta Bull, Big Bob Gibson, and Obie-Cue all have MSG in their rubs... that I found anyway. I may have some Cookshack product at home. I'll check those bottles as well for you.

Let me know if I need to send you a check or if someone is buying that rub off of you. Either way, I'll make it right.

Hi Todd, that's the first thing I did after seeing MSG in the ingredients list in the Yardbird. None of the other rubs I have purchased mention MSG in the ingredient list that's why I was so surprised to see it in Yardbird. Like I said, I was naive about the usage, not anymore as I've been doing some research about it and will be cautious about purchasing rubs and marinades with it from now on. Wanted to buy some Kosmo injections yesterday but first emailed him to inquire. He quickly responded his beef and pork injections have MSG in them, his chicken soak doesn't.
Send the check please, I'm sending the Yardbird to CajunSmoker for cost of shipping.

billm, I do make my own rub but like to purchase rubs from people who have been successful in comps with their own rubs so I can get an idea of what a truly good and tested rub tastes like. It's all a matter of personal tastes and so far my rub is my family favorite but I still like to check out what others are successful with.
