I just got my Nu Temp 701 (thanks for the discount Phil) and was suprised to see no on off switch? Am I missing it, or does the thing just stay on 24/7? If so, how many batteries does it eat in a year?

Batteries will last well over a year in the receiver. I change the transmitter batteries when the display gets dim. Thats about every 9-10-11 months in the transmitters, longer if your in a warm weather spot or you bring them inside. Mine stays outside all winter, so it wears the batteries a little faster, but the receiver is inside. I've gone close to 18 months on that set of batteries.
They are on 24/7. Just like a clock. You can leave them outside without a probe and they give ambient air temps to the receiver inside. I think its 2 AA in the receivers and 3 AAA in the transmitters.
I go thru more probes than batteries. I beat them up cause I use them in the WSM and BYC and they get squished in the doors/lids. At least in the bandera they drop down the chimney and saves the cables.

I leave mine on the deck year round and use as an outside temp gauge.
