Under the lid is a aluminum cookie sheet. It bolts through to one just like it on the top. Like your house, that's where most of the heat is lost. See http://www.bandera-brethren.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=952 for more details

Under the lid is a aluminum cookie sheet


And a little rust that could use some refinishing. 8)

No refinishing. Once it burns completely through, the whole firebox will be replaced. When I do, all the heat shields will go back in from day one. That way, coupled with the baked-in oil mod, I shouldn't have to worry about it for a very long time.
