Our new category is...

"Cakes and Pies"
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a0swvUsbmrs/SoSy5FmGQyI/AAAAAAAAAnI/GBbjEUxk3uE/s400/CakeVsPie.jpg
Which will win?

...as chosen by Que-Dawg, the winner of the Shellfish Throwdown (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71424)!

I am personally very excited about this category, and I fear the food envy the Brethren will unleash upon an unsuspecting world with their creations, given the upcoming holidays and all.

For cakes, not everyone may feel they have a cooker suitable for making cakes. If that is the case, there is no reason on Earth you can't come up with a pie that would fit within the rules and garner lots of voting attention!

Here are the simple and unchanging rules for the BBQ Brethren Throwdown...

1) The dish must be Grilled or Smoked during the cooking process, or feature Grilled or Smoked ingredients in a prominent manner.
2) Entries must be cooked during the current throwdown period ( 10/30 - 11/8 ).
3) All pics (any number) must be submitted by Midnight Central Time on the night of 11/8.
4) Only one picture from one dish will be used for voting, so please specify which one you want used, otherwise I will choose and my decision will be final.
5) If you have any problems with any of the entries, believing them not to be qualified for any reason, please use the ***VOTE*** thread and exercise your power of voting against those entries. Any complaints posted in any Throwdown thread, or directed to me via any other means will be ignored.

The voting will begin Monday 11/9 after I submit the "Vote" thread and will run through Friday 11/13. All votes will be public.

Don't forget the Wild Game Throwdown (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71307) is still accepting entries until midnight Sunday night (11/1)!

Our next category will be decided by the winner of the Soups, Stews & Chili Throwdown (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71484).

Best of luck and even better eats to all!

Had some left over peccadillo filling, I added more cheese and chipotle and thought I'd give it a shot, made the pie crust, fired up the kettle. Cooked on foil indirectly, I had to finish them over direct heat as the bottoms refused to brown. They worked out ok, very tasty. Gave props to BB as if it wasn’t for you all I would have never made these. OBTW, the reason I entered these is that I saw a Elton Brown show on "hand Pies" so I'll leave that up to you all.

Don't know if anyone cares much for chocolate here, but figured I'd give this cake a shot.
Only three ingredients needed (and only one pound of chocolate):
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4001.jpg

Eggs are whipped a lot

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4002.jpg

Butter and chocolate are mixed:

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4006.jpg

and folded into eggs

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4009.jpg

and grilled at 425 in a water bath for 15 minutes

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4014.jpg

I normally do a chocolate ganache, but for you guys I tried something different.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4022.jpg

Close-up of slice

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/cake/IMG_4031.jpg

Wow.

The variety and creativity I saw before going into work today just blew my mind (apple pie, the piake, empanadas, rum cake.... ) Now after seeing the peeecan pic, Ross's weave, (that near perfect depth of field on that one shot), the stencil (good move BTW)..... I'm seeing double. Oh, wait a min..... it could be the Argentinan wine.

Anyways, hold a place for me, I'm coming 'round the bend. Here is what I am working with.

This is a new one for me, but it won't be the last time I make it. Trust me....... It's a bacon, potato & cheese pie. Fisrt the bacon is laid out in spiral fashon in a buttered cast iron skillet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/thirdeye2/Barbecue%2011/DSC09351a.jpg

Then a layer of Yukon Gold potatoes, garlic, onion and cheese is laid down, and repeated until the skillet is full.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/thirdeye2/Barbecue%2011/DSC09352a.jpg

The bacon comes back on top and is fastened with toothpicks. The skillet goes on a hot Egg.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/thirdeye2/Barbecue%2011/DSC09364a.jpg

Cook it until the taters are tender. (Rick, no parboiling here....)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/thirdeye2/Barbecue%2011/DSC09371a.jpg

Finally, it is plated and left to set up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/thirdeye2/Barbecue%2011/DSC09373a.jpg

About 10 minutes later it's ready ..... and so was I

Chris, make this last one the money shot please.
