What size is the opening on the expanded metal for the fire grate? Is it half inch or three quarter inch?

Whatever they sell at Home Depot, or the heaviest gauge of expanded steel you can buy.

I made mine out of 3/4 inch expanded steel from home Depot. I think it cost about $20.00. The size of the grate is 16 inches wide X 20 inches long. Mine fit VERY tight, so my measurement width wise may have been off 1/4 inch. Got the damn thing in and can't get it out! Gonna have to buy me an ash rake now. I may have to get a part time job to support my hobby! The truth of the matter is this: This will be the most important mod I think you will make. Cut my fuel usage by more than half.

Made a big difference. It makes keeping and reaching that important temp. a lot easier. I was worried about not having enough wood now I think I'm in good shape.

3/4 is What most use. 1/2 is ok, but you have to make sure ya dont get ash buildup. When u get the stuff, pick up a couple 1 inch wide by 36in long flats of 1/4 inch steel. cut 2 to 19 inches and attache the expanded steel to them with stainless steel bolts. Cut 2 more at 15 inchs and mount them across the center of the grate, sectioning the grate into thirds. This will stop the grate from ever sagging and extend the life. If the expanded steel ever wheres out, then just replace that. The Flats will last forever.

Pictures are in the photos / mods section. And in The 101 document.

Phil,

Thanks for making the specs on the flat metal for the fire grate clear. In the 101 file it mentions 9/16" flat steel, but I couldn't figure out wht that was (stupid me).
