I agree with you Scottie and I am positive that I could learn. However, I guess I just am the shoe up and compete type of guy.

If I was not that type of guy, I would just try to decorate my space the best.

However, for YankeeBBQ you can PM me if you are interested in using the Stump's. It's my Stump's Thom is pimping.

But I get dibs, if it wins and you go to the Jack because of it I get to go too.

That the stndard rental deal, right Scottie. :icon_cool

Scottie
11-03-2009, 02:14 PM
The deal with the Jack is you would have to cook with that team... Seeing that Steve has been to the Jack the last like 20 years in a row, it would probably be a good hedge bet.... So just using that teams equipment would not qualify...

Plus teams only get 6 roster spotrs for the Jack. I know Steve has that many team members. Thom got lucky, because my kids can't "officially" be on my roster. So he got to go up to the Hill because they couldn't...

toys4dlr
11-03-2009, 02:52 PM
No problem Scottie, just being a little bit of a smart a$$. It is my nature.

Besides, if I ever make it to the jack, it will be to cook on my team. That is the goal.

Well, what I was hinting at... Is if Mr. Farrin was able to cook with your stuff as ISS!!! and you were his dishwasher.... I don't know how he could say no that you couldn't come to the Jack... It's just the right thing to do....

Nothing the matter with looking over someone shoulder... Note I am not saying shigging.... I know quite a few folks that have paid good money to take cooking classes from ISS!!! I've been fortunate and have had the opportunity to cook with Steve. Then again I have also had that opportunity to cook with Rod as well. They are currently 1 and 2 in the TOY... Not sure what happened to my dumb ass....

It will be interesting to see what other out-of-state teams decide to attend this event. Speaking from limited experience, the Pulte event really is a great competition.

I know that a majority of the AZ teams are really looking forward to cooking against some of the top KCBS teams in the country. This will be a really good time with temps in the 80's and a large crowd.

Should be an awesome event.

If any other teams are planning on attending, please get in touch with me ASAP at Michael@AZBarbeque.com The Registration Deadline has passed and I need to submit our site layout, so I do need to know if you are planning on attending.

This "secretive" list of who's cooking in contests out West seems to be pretty common. I, personally, find it quite irritating. If someone's signed up, they're signed up. Period. What's the big deal???

Especially if they signed up after the posted deadline has come and gone.

Nah, It's an ego thing there, Timmy.

Some folks get off on the attention of "oh, are they coming or not" BS. Show up in your quarter million dollar rig or fly in at the last minute like a rock star....it's just BBQ man. And at the end of the day even the guy on his Wally World stick burner has chance of winning.

Me? I'm looking to have some fun with my BBQ friends, and if we get a walk or two, or take the whole thing even better. But it won't ruin my day if we don't, and I won't have to shuffle back to where ever I came from embarrased because I got my butt kicked by some backyarder.

Maybe in some cases. I don't think so in the case of the teams I'm familiar with that are coming to this event. One thing to keep in mind is that in some cases some of them are at the end of a long season. They have budgets, family obligations, work issues, just like everybody else. Just something to think about, before you get the opportunity to meet those folks on Friday.

You're right Jorge.... It had/has to do with other issues than just being listed on a list of teams. Let's face it guys. AZ is not close for teams outside of the AZ/Cali region. To get there takes some major league planning. I know, I've done this fly in for a few comps in my career. If you are doing it at the last minute and have to fly in, you are probably out at least $1500 before the contest even starts... I can guarantee you that is probably the budget for 3 local teams if not more.

I for one would be happy to have the caliber of teams coming in. You get to see what we have to compete against on a weekly basis. I for one would be happy that teams are wanting to come from across the country to cook in my local contest. I'd still want to kick their asses, but it's still an honor to get your but kicked by them. I am fortunate... I've had my butt handed to me numerous times this year by these guys!!!

Don't get me wrong, Scotty, I am absolutley happy that we can get some big names out here, I think it is great for the southwest and especially Arizona. We put on some great events and the more exposure we get throughout the country the better.

My response was to Tim as he was talking about the possibility of teams that commit to contests but don't want their names listed as participants and so they held back entry till the last minute. Draw your own conclusions about what that is all about, but we have seen that out here before.

If you are in, say you are in and let it be known you are in. The promoters of the events have logistial issues to deal with, trying to accomodate last minute entries has got to be a pain in the a$$, and it is downright rude to call at the last minute and expect to be included because you are a so called "big name."

We all have to deal with last minute circumstances that cause us to change plans abruptly. This is understandable and I empathize with those who are in that predicament.

But anyone who believes that they are above any of the rest of us and think that they deserve special treatment just because they have been sucessful as of late might as well just stay at home. You are not my Brethern and as far as I am concerned you are not welcome here. I am sure most of us would agree that we don't need that kind of element among us.

I have met some great, down to earth people through the BBQ Brethern and other sites and contests. That is exactly what I like about this sport. Just good folks who enjoy competing against each other, while also having a good time together. If you are doing it for any other reason, then in my opinion you just don't get it.

Rant over!

I do get you Dean. I'm just saying that I don't think the problem was over not wanting their name on a list because they were trying to operate in the cover of darkness...

I don't believe in this hiding on a list. I will also say that I have asked to be not included, just because I have been messing with teams inthe past. I sure hope teams weren't thinking I was above the rules for everyone else when I was doing it. As I was just trying to be a sandbagger...

Ultimately it is all about having fun and I will be the first to say that you guys in the AZ Barbeque Club know how to do that!!!

My goal to come to Arizona was something that started 10 months ago. One of my 2009 goals was to do a "fly in" in another part of the country. This summer, we started to look at the calendar and decided on AZ. I've not regretted it. The hospitality has been amazing. I can't wait to get there and meet all of my new friends and experience AZBBQ.

As I told Diva, we are snowbirds. Coming to AZ is a way to extend our endless summer. These "snowbird" teams are good for AZ not because of names, but because they increase the numbers. Pulte has to be happier the bigger the event is. Expanding AZ BBQ competitions is really the big picture in all of this. A lot of people are working hard at it. Glad that we can help as well.

This was a great weekend!

Neighbors don't come any better than David and Martin from Butcher's BBQ! Cooks don't come much better either. If you ever get to spend some time around David it's not a bad idea to spend a lot of time listening to what he has to say. Thank you for the education and the laughs.

I'd list everyone else it was my pleasure to meet, and apologize to those that I didn't make the time to see but I'm afraid that I'd forget somebody! I really appreciate those of you that took the time to come by and say hello and I really wish that there had been more time to visit with everyone.

I do want to thank Thom, Mike from AZBBQ, MrSmoker, and everybody else that was so generous in the loan of equipment. Todd was the cook, but there wasn't anything that either of us needed that we didn't have. It was a true pleasure meeting all of you as well!

That's an event that I'd like to get back to again!

Soon after the contest was over, all I could think about was getting home to my family. Haven't unpacked or even unloaded the truck yet. Just been cuddling with Christian while watching UP, made a Shoofly Pie with Michael, and white chicken chili with Christian. They missed me almost as much as I missed them. I'm sure glad BBQ is over for the year. After 23 contests, I've got some catching up to do with my boys.

Michael Reiman is a great guy and puts on a great contest. Jorge and I got to judge the Anything Butt and Dessert contests on Friday night. Holy crap were those some amazing entries!!! I'm proud to say that I judged both the winning dessert and the winning AB entry. I gave each of them a 999. The AB entry was a smoked, prime ribeye steak as big as your head with a warm crab salad on top and bernaise sauce on the side. Each of the six judges got a steak. That entry must have cost him $200, but it earned a 1st place trophy and hopefully enough cash to pay for it.

We weren't doing the people's choice, but had people wanting BBQ anyway. We gave out our ribs and a few samples of brisket. Gave all of our tickets to Toys 4 BBQ to add to their collection and redeem for $$.

Mr Smoker and I go back about three years on the Brethren. I used to ship Richard a lot of sauce back in the day. It was not only great to meet him, but to have him hanging out during turn ins and at the awards proudly wearing his new Plowboys BBQ T-Shirt.

Meeting "Thom Emery from the Internet" was an honor. A great sense of humor and a generous guy to offer up his pits. Thom wears his passion for BBQ on his sleeve and was more a "celebrity" than some of the so called Big Name teams there were assembled.

I got to meet my idols, VQ & Diva Herself. Down to earth and special people. VQ talks with you like you've known him for years.

We met Sweet Peppers in passing a few times at the Royal, but seeing these guys in their element was something to take in. Easy to like and great cooks to boot. Viva New Mexico!!!

Thank you AZBBQ for offering all you had! Only wish your judges had better taste in BBQ.

I did on Friday afternoon, but didn't have my camera with me. By Friday night, I was asleep by 11pm. I wanted to hit the midnight bash. After seeing the pictures, I'm really pissed that I didn't make it.

After yakkin' with you on FB, I never got to meet ya. Or get away with some rub ;o) I did see you judging the desserts. Then Saturday AM rolled around, and I was forbidden from cruisin' the camps, as this was my first judgeship. If I ever drive thru KC again, I'll hail on the way thru. I want to hit some of the DDD places Guy Fiere went to--Grinders, et al. Love the story about your homecoming. Love kids, I really do. Check out the cakes my 14 YO makes. She put a smoker on a cake for me Sunday. Neat!

I ate at Grinders once. Got food poisoning. The other place he did "Mothers" "Mommas" or whatever it is, isn't supposed to be very good.

Don't suppose you can go wrong sticking with Strouds. Used to love that place! Haven't eaten there in years, sorry to hear the original got pulled down.
