Tried propane heaters? My buddy has one in his garage - works beautifully.

I use a kerosene turbo heater. They warm up an area quick. Only problem is they are loud, loud, loud.

I have one identical to this (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&langId=-1&catalogId=4006970&PHOTOS=on&TEST=Y&productId=595&categoryId=0) I've been using to heat my uninsulated 20'x20' Garage with no ceiling. It's fairly cheap to operate and will put a 50º raise over outside temps in 'bout an hour. It puts out 17,000 BTU but it's got to be hardwired. It's worth it as you don't have to worry about CO or the moisture problems associated with Propane or Kerosene portable heaters and it doesn't take up any floor space. 4 yrs for me and it's been working flawlessly. If you've got a closed of ceiling and an insulated garage door you'll be working in shorts and a T-Shirt :-) It's also very quiet.

I've also considered adding one of these. (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?xsell=17303&storeId=6970&productId=21340&langId=-1) Two of them would be the same cost, but give you more BTU. I would imagine that they're fairly loud though and no built in thermostat.

My wife is a potter so the kiln is my garage heater and I defy anybody to find a heater that gets hotter quicker than her little clay oven. You do have to have a 40 amp 220 outlet to feed the thing.

Thanks, I looked at that 17,00 btu unit on line today. It's good to know someone likes it. My garage has a ceiling, insulated doors and is about 30 X 24. So it might be ok. I have Propane hot water heat in the house and could run a line out to the garage, but most of the propane garage units state not recommended for use above 4,500 ft and we are at 6,700ft. Heck, I have a hard time getting oxgen to breath let alone to burn. Plus a little woried about welding with gas near and cutting metal, already had a fire going while cutting metal with my radial arm saw.

We used one of your 'this's as our main heat source in our first apartment and it was amazing. We had it sitting in front of a sealed fireplace, sitting on the floor and it heated three big insulated rooms with 15 foot high ceilings. They'd be all anyone would ever need in a garage.
