For what Tel Tru wants for the things they had better. $$$$$ I prefer my $1.380 thermocouple.

I think I need an interpreter for this one. What am I reading, and how do I use it?

Interpretation "I'm a cheap basterd so I'm sticking with my Fluke HH51 digitil thermometer and thermocouple. The $1.380 T/C was free. Hince the price. Brian Speak for no beer. ****"

The Coopers are nice- they also have a decent digital.
Hope my Trading Post Partner likes them
Thanks,
Eric
I know that some of us use digital multi meters (DMM's) for electronic thermometers. I would be interested in knowing more about this.

Okay I can help with this. What kind of DMM ? There is a conversion chart at www.omega.com that tells you the reference voltage in millivolts for thermocouple type. I pulled it up this AM, it was in pdf format but was not able to save it as I was in a cluster **** at work. I use tyype K. So if there is interest I will follow through. Let me know by posting or email. fair Enough ?

I'm interested Brian.
I'm interested to find out what the fark you guys are talking about.
Are we still talking about calibrating cheapo thermometers?
I am clueless as to what your jargon means.
Let's start a Brian Technical Thrread
Did you ask Santa for a micrometer when you were a kid? :)

Already got a micrometer. Sorry. So what do you not understand ? A thermocouple is two diffrent metal types welded to form a bead. This diffrence in metals creats a potential(voltage) which can be measured and converted to a temperature.

beaded meat. sounds tempting

Only with trimmed cheese.
Brian:
I’ve been considering buying a decent DMM for computer testing, cooking temperature measurement, etc. I agree with Bill (I think). This would be good for our members. “Let's start a Brian Technical Thread.”
Specifically, I would like to know to convert any DMM to a thermometer via standard banana plugs and generic type K thermocouple wire (on the cheap and step-by-step). Obviously, this would lead to the “DMM to thermometer mod for the complete idiot” and should be stored in the files/mods section. How about it?
BTW; ebay has a category for multimeters
http://listings.ebay.com/aw/plistings/category25412/index.html?from=R11
and one for thermometers too

Either one of these is a good buy run $150 at leats retail. With regards to a DMM you want ti to measure down in the millivolt range. Let me know what length you want for a Thermocouple, I will see what I can do.
Brian
whatever the download was I could'nt down load it Got a link?

http://www.omega.com/temperature/Z/zsection.asp
Thermocouple Reference Data Type K, Deg F
Lot of info to process. Head hurts already. I think I found the chart you mentioned that gives millivolt readings and corresponding temperatures
http://www.omega.com/temperature/Z/pdf/z218-220.pdf
So I'll need to print this out and laminate to the smoke chamber door to figure out what the temp is? Bottom line: seems like too much hassle don't it?

Think if you laminate it to smoke chamber it would be tuff to read ? :-)
attached is a gif of the portion of omega's pdf that covers cooking/smoking temperatures that is readable even after numerous beers. If it appears cropped just drag the borders out some.
