I was at the local Super Target today looking for a gift for one of my children and happened to walk by the aisles that housed the kitchenware stuff. I spotted a large stainless steel colander/strainer and I remembered that I have a huge one at home. I gave up on my previous idea of drilling holes in the stainless steel stock pots. I think I may have found a solution - if I can just sneak it outside for a test run. This is an oversized colander a bit larger than the size of the charcoal pan in the bullet/water smokers. Charcoal colander sounds good.

betcha that the metal is to thin to stand up to too much use.

yup. i agree.. the charcoal pans from NB and brinkman are porcleain coated steel, dont thing a collander will hold up to a basket full of charcoal for too long.

My daughters have those glass sun catcher ornaments whereby you pour these little glass beads into a mold and melt them into a steel mold to form a glass surface.

Do you think he can line the collander with these, then melt it into a glass finish? It would be porcelain, but it would look pretty cool

thing a collander will hold up to a basket full of charcoal for too long.

I think my charcoal chimneys are made of thicker steel, and I have seen them glow red to the point of being see through.

Points well taken - even though I think the gauge of the steel is pretty heavy - it may not be worth it.
