Does everyone here leave the damper on the chimney wide open when Q-ing? I am still relatively new at this and want to get as much info as I can from the more seasoned Bandera vets.

Depends on the wind for me.
I live right off a forest preserve meadow, and it can get pretty windy. If the wind is sucking the smoke pretty good through the chamber, I might go 3/4 open, but never less than 1/2 open. I also will slightly close the door vent on the firbox. I keep farking with them depending on what temps I'm holding and whether I just added fuel and such.
Heat shield seems to slow the heat loss from a strong wind too, but theres no way for me to prove it. Might all be in my head.

I usually keep both the smoke stack and firebox damper wide open. Once in a while I'll fuss with the firebox door vents, but will never shut them down.

I open the top all the way to get fire going. I have then closed top to no more than 1/4 open, digital responds with imediate temp rise in smoke chamber under heat sheild.

Firebox i try to have full open all the time, and control the temp with the size of the fire. this way, the chimney can stay full open, for cleanest burn, never less than 3/4 open... may go to half for short periods to get temps up... but only briefly(holds heat in).

Ditto for me too. The smokestack cover is nothing but a rain guard to me. Open when in use, closed when stored. With the firebox vent, I'll usually close to 1/4 open with new charcoal/wood and then open all the way when I see that first dip in temp.

Thanks for the discussion, brethren. Going to do some serious Q'ing this weekend so I will fiddle around with the dampers and see how it goes. No room for the heat shield as all racks will be used.

Yuo could probably use those goofy sausage hangers to support a heatsheild if all of the racks are being used.

Good idea Greg. The wife really didn't like the idea of using one mounted to the bathroom door to hang her bath robe :D

I mounted my sausage hangers to the inside of the closet door.
When my kids are bad, I hang them up by their belt loops and shut the door.

I actually used those things once,.....once. Shown here with a load of beef jerky.

Did you get a new Bandera one or is that a older pic?

It must be a fake... there's paint on top of the firebox, and the wood shelf is pristine

Oh my God!!!!!! To Funny!!!!!!! I wish it still looked like that. If you look close you can see the water pan brackets hanging off of the rib racks. I bought it assembled with no instructions. I had no idea what the fark they were for.
Dave, that was an old pic. Should have cooked bacon and eggs on that thing while I had the chance.

I'm dying.
I looked at those things hanging from the rib rack when I just posted it. I said to myself "Self, Mine never came with those extra hooks. Don't know what they are for, but I was gyped"
Priceless
Some one Please tell me how to post a pic in their response like Greg just did.

Weren't you the one that did that?
Mine is only about a year old, and it's starting to look nasty. About time to coat the outside with some vege-oil and get it looking good and shiny again.

Mark,
there are 2 ways.
1 is to do what I just did to your post. Click "quote" button. On the bottom of the window I am typing in, there is an add attachment button. Save image to your disk, browse button below to find file, then hit Add Attachment. Then hit submit.
Method #2, just hit Post reply (I think) at the top of the thread. It will give you that same input box for your reply with the attach feature ate the bottom.
The reason you don't see this is because 99% pf the time (like me) you use the "quick response" feature at the bottom of the thread.
If this doesn't help, find one of my responses in any thread, hit PM for private message, and send me your issues. I will correct them with you directly.
Thanks
Thanks. I think I've got it. Look for what I'm uploading in the woodpile.

Richie posted a mod to use those sausage hangers as a shelf holder on the door. I did it.. uses channel mounted to the door with 2 holes drilled in them. pop the hangers in the channel. Fold them out to hold a shelf while ya mop, or turn stuff ,and fold them in to close the door. Worked great till the rivets broke... never got to putting it back on, but if I do, i'll use a nut & bolt.
