Remnants of hurricane damage continue to manifest themselves around here. My buddy's neighbor had a freshly downed tree in his backyard. Claims that the park service said it was pear. It's 30' or more I'd guess, and the guy said it never had a pear on it. So I took a branch/leaves and studied the internet. I believe I found a match, and it appears that some pear trees only flower and get little dime-sized "fruits". So it's no wonder the guy said he never saw fruit on it. Any of you guys familiar with pear trees like that, and has anyone Q'd with it? I can get a TON of it.

Maybe a bradford or aristocrat pear tree? They both have small less than marble sized fruit. I would definitely throw some on the fire and see how the aroma/flavor is. Especially if you can get a buttload!

Sounds like a Bradford Pear. I had one go down a couple years ago and used it to cook with. It produces a very mild smoky flavor. Great on poultry. Not nearly as strong as hickory or oak. My advice would be to load up as much as you can get your hands on. Especially if the price is right [read FREE].

Yes - I neglected to indicate what I thought I found (it was Bradford). I'm going to cut some wheels this weekend. Phil - I recon I'll be seeing you again by Spring if not sooner. You want some? Anyone else in the MD, WV, PA, or VA area want some?

Im always up for more wood!!! I just got some pear from that tree guy. He dropped off cherry, apple, pear, american chestnut and ALOT of that cotten candy wood, which BTW, he claims the owner told him is Mullberry. I looked up mullberry and the bark didnt look like this stuff, but who knows.

so, if ya wanna make a winter/fall roadtrip, we can do a few briskets up on saturday and ya can blow out on sunday with a load of wood to take back.
