While we are at it, can we all decide on how we are going to spell bretheren? OK I just looked it up, apparently brethren is the proper spelling.
love ya all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Theres a story behind the misspell... but at this point, it has been corrected. The primary domain name is Bandera Brethren. We have 3
BBQ-Brethren.com
Bandera-Brethren.com
and the old one "Bandera-Bretheren".com
I wanted us to hash out some issues at the bash, but we never really were able to talk to serious. One of the things was to change our name to BBQ-Brethren.. since we are not only banderas anymore. But to answer gregs question.. We are "The Brethren". Spelled properly. I just havent gotten a chance to change the graphic which is used as a header on the web pages. But everwhere else, its been corrected.
So name change??? BBQ-Brethren??? what ya think??

I kinda like Bandera Brethren, even if we don't all have Banderas anymore. Isn't Bandera a pretty heavy BBQ town in Texas?
But hey, I'll be here no matter what you call us so knock yourselves out with whatever name you'd like.

i only thought BBQ-Brethren so it denotes what we are better. I tell people about the site and they say "what the hell is a Bandera?". thats why i left both domain names though, so with people outside of the "bandera" circle, we can jsut say "BBQ-brethren.com" and they will remember it easier. But for those who know what the Bandera is, we still have that name.
BBQ-Brethren works for me, too.
Bandera is a small town kinda west of San Antonio -- not known for much except ranching -- there are some B&Bs, restaurants, etc. around. It is pretty laid back -- kinda like the brethren (us!).
Bandera Brethren has a ring to it but since we have moved on from being relatively exclusively Bandera owners it might be time to move on to a group name that does reflect what we do rather than the equipment we use. Good 'que is the name of the game :D
With the assortment of cookers that the members now have, I think BBQ-Brethren makes more since.
So I vote for bbq-brethren.

BBQ-Brethren sounds good. I am going to add a WSM to keep my Bandera company so a generic "BBQ" works!

but Phil, if it weren't for our BANDERA'S we would've never gotten together online (on one site)...and i must admit, we are a cool and unique collection of individuals! so my vote is to remain faithful to our namesake...the BANDERA! besides, to call ourselves BBQ Brethren ain't exactly right...half the time we grill, and half the time we smoke. something that makes our BANDERA what it is...half griller, and half smoker!
hope i'm not too late.

As long as we keep eating turds don't think a pump station will be required.

Hi,
This is my first post here.
I came in expecting "Bandera talk". What I'm seeing is "BBQ-talk". So the Bandera name is a little misleading.
Someone earlier posted that the Bandera is no longer being built.
Didn't WC Bradley (Char-Broil) buy the New Braunfels Smoker Co.? I'm now seeing the Char-Broil Bandera in Home Depot and Wal-Mart.

Egkor
Welcome aboard!!!
We're Both!!! and maybe you've answered our question.. We're Both.. Bandera originals, the Bandera is what got us together and got us started, but we've grown to a point where we are all BBQ enthusiasts! (and bad spellers too).
What we have here is a group that started specifically for the NB Bandera. 95% of us have Banderas as our primary smoker, but what we found is that 1- we use more than just the bandera 2 - our conversation most of the time is general Q related and 3 - Memebrs have joined that are beyond the hardware or arent Bandera only. There is only so much you can discuss about the bandera, once the mods are done your on the road to Q and thats what we're talkin about.
So, to get to your question, I havent seen a post about the bandera being discontinued. But Charbroil bought New braunfels early this year. Once original Stock disappeared, the charbroil name appeared on the Bandera and production has moved off shore to China.
With the move to China, the Bandera has degraded slighty in quality. Memebrs have reported a lesser quality being in thinner steel. The NB bandera was 16 gauge, i have heard reports of both 18 and 20 gauge(20 i would question) on the Charbroil version. There were also reports of a smoke chamber with different dimension, however that remains open for depbate until a Charbroil representative can tell us otherwise. first reporst were of a smoke chamber that is one inch smaller both sdes than the NB version. this came under assumption I believe becaiuse the dimension of the grates wer listed as 14 5/8 x 14 5/8 as opposed to nearly 16" square. The original bandera shelves are still available thru charbroil. part numbes are in our archives.
if your looking ofr bandera specific, we have a files section dedicated to theNB Bandera, the mods and techniques most often used. Also the Bandera 101 document is there to get people started.
So if ya want to talk Bandera... your in the right place.. Just post away... and once your past the hardware specifics, general Q is open discussion.
Memebrs.. Egkor has made a good point here.. do we want a "Bandera specific" forum in the Discussion area? It s our roots.
badger

I think the Bandera forum is a good idea. We don't really have a hardware forum, a would be good to have since we mostly "mod" the bandera smoker.

Might a swell start there can always expand to other smokers if needed through diffrent forums and such. Our threads do tend to wonder just a bit.

Hi Phil and all,
Thanks very much for the welcome!
I currently use a approx. 15 year old New Braunfels Black Diamond (NBBD) offset firebox smoker, a 3 month old Weber Genesis Silver-B LP gas grill, and a 11 year old Weber 22.5 kettle.
I've been thinking of changing over to a Bandera from the NBBD.
I do like this site, the member posts, the photos and info. Really good stuff.
Thanks also for the rundown on the Bandera build as its parent company changed hands. I didn't know that as a Char Broil they are produced in China now.

I got the Hondo version of the Black diamond/silver smoker. its a fine cooker that turned out some great stuff for me for years before I moved to the Bandera. Still use the Hondo for chicken thighs. For some reason, nothing makes them better than the hondo. Buffolo turds also are better in the hondo. I think its more to do with the dry heat offered in the hondo.
I personally havent seen the Charbroil Bandera. So if one of our memebrs have the new version... speak up!!! give us a rundown on the charbroil version. Maybe even some exact measurements so we can put to sleep the debate on size differences.
Also, be aware that Brinkman has a Bandera knockoff that may also be an option for you. But once you go to a vertical chamber... you'll love it. I personally think the vertical is much more useffull than the horizontals.
Welcome again!!! and enjoy the group... we got alot of good stuff and great people here. !!

Pooba, and Brethren,
After reading egkor’s post, yours, John’s and Brian’s replies I am
having second thoughts. I fell on the side of “Bandera-Brethren”,
but now I’m not so sure. Why not open a forum dedicated to the
other smokers, pits & grills that we use and know about as well as
the Bandera. A consumer forum if you will.
If we don’t use a brand name, we won’t be perceived as having
an allegiance to any particular company, or vendor.
I’m not proposing a consumer advocacy site. That could become a
nightmare. Just a forum where people could come to ask questions
and get our opinions about Q related hardware, and maybe (if possible)
not have to join our group to do so, but probably would want to join our
backyard after reading the answer.
I’d like to see where something like that takes us.
Any Ideas???

I see Frank did not read the origins thread. It started out as a bunch of troublemakers on another website altogether. I mean, as a group that was focused on Bandera's, that then grew.
Bandanas have, to my knowledge, always been optional.
