I have been looking around for a backyard fire pit, everything local and on the Internet seems over priced and made very cheap.
While I was antique shopping the other day with my wife around New Braunfels, TX, I came across a bunch of fire pits behind a antique store. They were exaclty what I was looking for, rugged, simple yet functional. I asked the owner how much the smallest one was and he said $200.00 and would ship it to California for me via UPS or his Trailer that makes trips hualling funiture out to California all the time. The pit has a grill that when you rotate it 360% up or down to get closer or away from the fire. It also comes with leg extensions to raise it up high enough to grill on.
Here are some pictures of it, let me know what you guys think... or if you know of a better one somewhere else.
Thanks,
John

You are looking at a very heavy duty unit -- I'd spend 200 for that. My Coleman works best for my camper because of weight. Shipping will kill you unless he will drop ship with his truck.
Just my $.02 worth. That's a nice firepit -- it's not antique, though. I saw a couple of similar units at a "Cowboy Cookoff".

You are right, and that is why I like it. What I am really supprised about is that the wife also likes it.
I need the heavy duty unit (at least this is my excuse) because of my two Boxers who are not to agile when they play (they have broken many 2x4's and those temperary steel fence posts). And I just plain like the looks.
I have not bought it yet, I am still waiting to hear back from the owner regarding how much he is going to charge me for shipping.

I looked on both costco's and coleman's sites, I am worried about the legs. I not much of a cleaner/orginizer when after parties. I am afraid I would forget that I left the pit out in the middle of the patio for a few days and come back to a pile of metal. Picture this... two 70lb boxers playing tackle football (and no, they do not actually play football...at least not yet :) ) they just play very rough.
John;
I, too, like the looks of this unit. You could build a brick "planter" around it or set the legs in a few inches of cement or something like that -- seems this unit would do as well as most with your canine problem :D
Another option would be to build a brick or stone firepit and buy the hardware to mount -- check out the Sunset books at your local building establishment. Good luck!

I have 2 - 90 pound poochs. the pit weighs about 50lbs, mostly firegrate.... the colmen knocks down to about a foot high. Center screen folds in and lays on top of the pit, then the cover drops to cover everything. They cant knock it over when its closed cause its low to the ground, and if they crashed into it, it hurt them more than it. I'll take some pics later for ya.

Neighbors got a great pit.
Its the bottom (sans legs) of an old Weber kettle.
Phils got an extra with the legs already trashed, unless he tossed it.
