I've committed to doing chicken thighs for this season, but after judging a coupla comps and hearing judges complain about how all they ever see is thighs, I thought about branching out next year. (Yes, yes, I know the advice about not being too different. Still....)

My question is: Are poussins legal? These are baby chickens, very small, and very flavorful. They're tinier than cornish game hens. See pictures and descriptions:

The way I read the rules, there's nothing about the age of the chicken so I think they would be legal. I'm afraid, though, that someone will mistake them for quail or squab or some other dinky bird and I'd get DQ'ed. I suppose I could ask for a pre-ruling by the rep.

Whaddya think?

If it looks like a chicken and clucks like a chicken...

probably legal..

just make sure the taste is really that much better and you can make a really kick-arse box from an appearance standpoint..

also make sure the $ spent justify the potential rewards. Just keep in mind some of the best chicken cooks on the comp scene are using basic supermarket chicken.
