Phil, I will ship dual plate divider out to you tommrow, please return single divider so I can re use it.

Birthing Room Pic included.

Note the "Jig" on table is where baskets are born and base is my grand mothers dough rolling board that she used to make biskets on. My mom would kill me, if she knew. It is over 100 years old, still level and very tight, how did they do that without elmers?. Jug is for water to put out fires on Jig when welding.....**** I need a real Job.....

hey al, if you change you picture setting on the camera to "web" settings. VGA or normal quality, it will reduce the size of the pics to about 10% of what your doing now. They will upload alot faster.

I'll send the divider back tomorrow and Give the basket another run on wednesday.

Hi Al, what is the purpose of a dual plate divider?

That thing looks sturdy! We don't use re-bar that big for streets in Texas :D

Single plate worked great here @ 6,700 ft above sea level, due to 20% oxegn content in a cubic ft of air. Coals in right side woud self-light in about 2-3 hours, great for long brisket burns while sleeping. I have trouble getting smoke chamber temp above 260F here.

When Phil used it in NY, which is lucky to be a foot above see level, his right side was going full blast in hour or less and his chamber was above 300F. Idea is that the 1 inch air gap between plates will slow down right side self lighting and therfore extend the unattended burn time.

Re-bar is there for two reasons.

One, the bottom of my original expanded metal was nearly burned out in less than a year and I don't smoke nearly as often as most on the Bretheren do, so I didn't want the group to be replacing bottoms frequently, if ever.

Two, the gaps in expanded metal are 3/4 inch wide and unburned coals drop throught too soon into the ash which causes them to stop burning too soon. The re-bar is 1/2 diameter and spaced 1/2 apart, works great. The bad news, it cost about $30 bucks to ship the first one up to Phil using UPS regular ground shipping. Now shipping will be more with dual plate divider.

Makes sense Al. It is good that y'all are actually doing some real testing. The finished product should be very functional.

hey Al i'm trying to build my own basket

tell ya what my plan is
built the basket with (2) dividers that almost cut the basket in half (left bout 4" to the end )
thinking the coals would burn in an "s" shape WRONG

mine did just like phil's had 10lbs of charcoal goin all at once

any way i've cut out the dividers and now i'm gonna try a "C" shape , the fire bricks i got are liner bricks 1" thick
i'm gonna leave a 4"-5" channel for the coals to follow and have the bricks on the inside of the "c" shape

I'm starting to think that you just can't cut the airflow in a bandera down enough to slow the combustion. We all might be better off re-welding our fireboxes to fix all of the air leaks.

Who thought up the idea of putting a bunch of 1/4" holes on the firebox damper?

Dual divider is on way to Phil for testing, scheduled to be there Sep 9, I had great luck with the single divider but it was because of altitude here. Gona build another dual divider tonight or tommrow and test here in basket #2 ....Got a big brisket yesterday 13 or 14 lbs....Love testing.

OK, now we're over the edge! Using firebricks like Legos -- sheesh! But, heck, it's definately worth a try!! Personally, my ECB doesn't have room for firebricks :D

Bricks like LEGOS, "a whole pit out of brick and no morter", hmmmm -- seems I saw some landscaping blocks that don't require mortar -- line with firebricks, oh man, I gotta go to the landscaping place this weekend :D

OK, I've seen them used as retaining walls at a couple of new sites around here -- I saw a mortarless retaining wall project on one of the remodeling shows, too -- might have been "Weekend Warriors". I'll let you know what I find.
