Try avoiding the parkways this time.

Screw that! Im draggin the RV right up the middle of the parkways with guns sticking out the windows going PKEW PKEW!

Just kidding! I'm traveling light this time carrying only display essentials and an airmat in the truck. If I get stopped by your Nazi police for driving my wrapped Av on the parkways, I will play dumb. (wife thinks I am dumb).

just check your height restrictions. There are some pretty low overpasses on the northern and southern state parkways.

To reiterate, these will be going to the team with the best lot. For reference, check out what Grim Reaper Smokers did last year.

Great job Brian!

Yeah, no kidding! I nearly lost my AC off my RV on the way to Williepallooza then had to drag through Brooklyn. Im just driving the Av with no trailer this time. I'll be flying solo after I drop the wife and kid in Staten Island.

Wow, those Weber grates are amazing...great job! Makes me wish we had something special for our lot. Our lot was right next to Grim Reapers last year, made our lot seem even worse by comparison when everyone was coming by to check his out.

Hopefully no one out does my "tent city" theme. I may add some mud to make it even more visually rich.

By the way, I am offering a reward to anyone who stumbles upon my 3rd place fish trophy that swam away in last year's monsoon.

Speaking of low overpasses.
Has the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill guys ever been to The Island.
If not, someone should give them a heads up about the parkways.
Or else there’s gonna be a whole mess of BBQ parts all over the place.

There will be 47 teams at the 2009 Battle of the BBQ Brethren.

An increase over last year, which isn't bad in our economy and for being up against the Jack.

If we count Phil's multiple personalities we are at 52 teams.

Not much going on yet..

World's largest Grill from Johnsonville was there..

I got there at same time as Phil and Yak - around 1:30. I dropped off a med BGE we needed for tomorrow but had to head back to work for a quick conference call. Jim & Dan (JimDandy's) also arrived then. Motoeric had just arrived too.

Well, it's time for another wrap-up of a Battle of the BBQ Brethren.

We had 47 teams this year. An increase in a down economy. We appreciate the trust that you have put in us to run an enjoyable event. The onsite grilling was a bit more refined than last year and we experienced fewer hiccups. The celebrity judging seemed to work for the attendees and more importantly the beneficiary, Breast Cancer Help. I hope that it was easy for the teams.

As is the case every year, my perspective on the event is severely skewed by my obligations that keep me from meandering and enjoying the event as a whole. Aside from the weather, it seemed the event flowed smoothly and people had a good time.

We had judges this year that traveled hundreds of miles to attend the event. One even flew in from Vegas. The judges all did a great job.

A few thanks are in order:

1) The teams, without whom there would be no need to get together for a competition.
2) The judges, without whom no one would know who won.
3) The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce, without whom we would not have an event. They put in a tremendous amount of time and energy ensuring that this event is run to the best of their ability. They are the unsung heroes in this.
4) RUB BBQ for sponsoring the event and for making some damned good BBQ. I need to get into Manhattan more.
5) Phil, for starting, bolstering and supporting ($) the BBQ Brethren; and for enthusiasticaly proclaiming a gospel we are all in support of.
6) Brian from Huntingdon Custom for a truly beautiful donation that was an amalgamation of functionality and art.
7) Vitale Bottled Gas for their generous donation of the BGE for the winner of the grilling contest.
8) Kingsford for their donation of the coupons for free bags of charcoal for the teams and the lighters.
9) Jerry, Linda, Don and Leslie. The gold standard in reps.

We hope that we have done enough to merit your joining us again next year.

Eric

Thanks Eric for all your help with putting this together. To say you take it seriously is an understatement:smile:. What a great contest. So glad my dad got first place chicken. Made the event special. Thank you Linda, Don, Leslie for all you do for BBQ in the northeast. Good People that get things done. Oh, and I guess you to Jerry, your okay. I do have to say, Jerry is the best MC at award ceremonis. When he did the chicken thing at award ceremony with the HOT DAWG truck guys, That was awesome. And he summed it up the best " Its BBQ, we are having fun". And Phil, you made a small internet chat room become a huge success. You are what BBQ is about. And an easy target for Jokes.

Even with the terrible weather....I had a great time and managed to not come home empty handed (Rubber Chicken...woo hoo!!!). Thanks to Eric and Phil for putting together such a great and well organized event. Congrats to all who walked!! Looking forward to next year and "passing the chicken" to next year's 13th place holder. Lot's of fun. I managed to miss the naked dance. How did that happen?

Special thanks to Julie from Swamp Pit who was nice enough to share her knowledge on garnishing the turn ins with putting greens.

Yes, there was someone videotaping with professional gear, don't know who they were shooting for though.

The fellow who was in charge of the videotaping gave me his card. He is Justin Baez a producer/reporter for Channel 12/Cablevision News. He suggested calling to find out when the footage will appear.

Also - special congrats to Smokehouse Rules for winning the prestigious Sledneck Memorial 13th Place Chicken Award !!

Nice Job guys... placing 13th is not so easy.

While I am happy to congratulate Smokehouse Rules on joining the proud few who have acheived membership in the Thirteenth Place Chicken Society, I have to admit that I was disappointed when a minor improvement in the quality of our chicken caused us to end up in 12th place and miss our chance of being the first team to take the coveted "Double Crown": 13th place chicken at both WilliePalooza and the Battle of the Brethren in the same year. So close!! This should be a lesson to all. Without constant vigilance, one little slip and Bang!, better chicken.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and talked to us! Thanks Eric for the nice words at the awards. I heard them but was blocked in the back of the crowd behind some vendors trying to make my way in lol. Had a great time.

Thanks Clint for the pseudo-moonshine. It was an experience!

I was told though that the rain was taken care of before I headed up. It was completely taken care of guys! Thanks and maybe next year I'll pass on the seconds. lol!

Great time, good food, great crowds and even better competitors!

Sled, unfortunately I got to awards with my video camera and realized I didn't have batteries in it. I did, however, get some footage of the storm here (http://blog.smokeindaeye.com/2009/10/26/a-wet-and-wild-third-place-victory.aspx). I got a little more from Saturday and the dude from Next Food Network Star hanging out in my site Sunday but I felt sick all weekend so I laid down a bunch and didn't get to film as much as I hoped.

Oh, and the world's largest grill is a scam.

I have some footage to make it, though I didn't get a chance to go and question the guy Dateline style. I had planned to cook the world's largest meat kebob on it and it wouldn't fit a 15 foot rod of meat.

By the way, I think some lady from a meat store gave me a brochure at the turn-in table. Anyone know the name of the place? I lost the brochure.

We were very happy to get our first walk in ribs. If we get enough medals, maybe we can make a trophy out of them?

I want to thank Chris, Nonthink, for being such a help. He worked non-stop and made things so much easier for me/us.

We had fun hanging out with Smokin' Irish - you guys were cool.

Loved the "Sit. Smoke. Good piggie" sign, but I missed the hats.

Congrats to JimDandy for doing so well in grilling.

Congrats to the current holders of the 13th place chicken  (been there, done that, had the chicken)

Not sure how the judges books could have gotten so screwed up. Oh well no biggy. If Meat at Slims could please private message me I'll get you the address to send the winnings to and everyone in between just shift yourselves down one spot. Ok?

I have a pic of the naked dance, unfortunately the photo didn't come out from when we put her in Mike's tent, not that it was that great; you would think someone would have more of reaction when they wake up and find a naked 65 year old woman standing over them. Good times though!

Next year I'm packing out a dance platform and a pole. In expectation that hotter ladies come by. Then I won't be so quick to bring them into a sleeping mans tent. But as the good man Bob S. said "She was a solid 2.

Wow, Wow, Wow!!!.....We had a blast....Where do I begin?

This was our first time out and we truely had an amazing time. I just want to thank Eric and Phil for putting this all together even though Phil spent most of his time breaking my chops (but I'll forgive him since he is the Poobah...hehe). I also want to thank the guys from Out of The Ashes and Everyone from Swamp Pit for all their help this weekend. You have no idea how much it meant to me and the rest of my team the help that you provided. I also want to thank all the college kids, they did a wonderful job this weekend.

It was absolutely AMAZING coming in 2nd place in grilling. That feeling was intense. Needless to say, I think I am hooked now. Congrats to everyone who walked this weekend and congrats to everywho didn't walk. As far as I am concerned we all did a fantastic job in those rainy conditions.

On another note, I have been to several competitions as just a spectator and have felt quite welcome by all of you, but this time I really felt like a part of the family and you guys and gals hold a very special place in my heart. Ok, I'm done sounding like a big moosh-ball.....Thanks Everyone.

WHEW!!! What a great event!! Thanks to Eric, Phil, the Chamber, the Town of Sayville and all the volunteers and other parties involved.

Linda, Jerry, Don and Leslie also get thanks and credit for running another great event.

Where to I start? I had to work all week at the restaurant until late at night so most of all the prep and packing was done by my wonderful teammate and patient wife, Trish. Nonthink and two other Chris’ were also tremendous helpers and we could not have been setup without them. Nonthink is a great teammate and we are happy to have him onboard.

I got there Saturday eve around 11pm and found the WSMs heating up in the pouring rain and the meat was all trimmed and ready to go. Next time we are using a tarp or canopy to cover the cookers. The wet and cold affected the cook times and temps.

We had some flooding but most of our inside area was dry, thank God. PRO TIP: Bring rubber boots. I am so glad I had my Penn boots from West Marine.

Got to see some vets and some newbies, too. Like I said to the new teams, a newbie team always gets a walk!!

We were psyched to get an 8th place walk in Ribs and we can’t wait for next year!!

I had a great time. Alot of work this time around. Sorry i didnt get a chance to socialize too much, but when i wasnt prepping I was dealing with the chamber folks and the sponsors. Regretfully, I missed the pole dancer at the blazin nutz camp. Instead, our saturday night highlight was standing in water and mud up to the top of my boots while we tried to dump 50 gallons of water off the sagging ez-ups. Maybe one of these years, Sayville wont be under water on our Saturday night.

Thanks to all you folks that came down and help make this contest an event. And thanks to the Sayville Chamber, and Eric and who helped put this thing together and RubBBQ, Vitale fuel and sabrett who sponsored us. I know the challenges that they faced and the monsoon didnt help at all, but I think all things considered they did a great job.
