Who's going? We're still thinking about it. According to the organizer via e-mail today they only have 10 teams confirmed so far.

Scottie
08-10-2009, 08:22 PM
They still have $10 or $11k up for grabs. I'd stay home too....

Yeah, the money is nice. We may have other stuff going on. We have to decide soon.

Walt, I can put in a word on your behalf if you want :-D

Hey now, we went to that bar last year! Need to get up in the church lot Walt. It was a little more on the quiet side...

Much more fun keeping the drunks (including a KCBS Judge!) from falling into our pit.

Ron, Iv'e got an in with a certain judge who will assure me the corner bar site :icon_pissed

I'll be there. I'm told I will be in the church lot again. I just need to remember the vodka for the security guards.

Scottie
08-20-2009, 03:58 PM
I spoke with the organizer today. They are up to 15 teams. A lot of local teams are missing out on the team list... for the record, I enjoyed this contest and they bend over backwards for the teams. So I am not sure why the teams are staying away. I was also told that they will for sure have 25 teams, so for those that are holding back, I'd get your application in. So you don't get shut out...

See you there!

Ron_L

I sent in our paperwork late last week. We're supposed to be in the church lot, too.

Scottie

I had too many complications, as they decided to start my girls school 2 weeks early. Although the good news is they will be done before Memorial Day.

Have fun out there. Some good folks out there.

i think the reason people are reluctant to go is that it is one of the realy bad hoods in milwaukee but i do know thay are getting good security but i wont stay down there lol

Scottie
08-21-2009, 07:02 AM
Honestly, I did not see any 'bad'... And we were also out of the lot and were also having a few drinks in Walt's bar...

I think folks freak out when it's in a different neighborhood. Let's be realistic, they are trying to revotalize the neighborhood. What kind of press would they have if it was bad for us? They wouldn't let that happen is my whole point.

The money is still the same, no matter what the hood.

I just find it funny that you will stun gun yourself, but afraid to go into a Milwaukeee neighborhood? Come on Billy, it wasn't that bad.

Stoke&Smoke
08-21-2009, 08:13 AM
Dang! Thought we had a gig that weekend which was keeping us out. Just checked the calendar, and it looks like it's open. If we can still get in today, 2 skinny cooks will be there!

Scottie
08-21-2009, 08:32 AM
Glad to hear it Dann. Email Marjorie and get on the list. See you then.

Stoke&Smoke
08-21-2009, 11:12 AM
Well, I got signoff from the Skinnier cook! (shot fairy) So just got off the phone with Marjorie. She says as of now, including us, there are 16 teams. Today is supposed to be the last day to enter, but I imagine they'll still take entries till they're full

Thought we were done till October, it will be good to get out again! I realized I had my dates goofed up. We were going to do Napervilles last fling rib contest Labor day weekend, but after hearing from the Smoke Hunters about their experience last year, this sounds like way more fun! We have the catering gig the following weekend, so Labor Day now looks like more fun!

Late Edit - Just heard back from Marjorie, confirmed our entry and informed me we'd be in "Scottie's Row" in the Church lot. Hope that's a good thing! This will be our first try out in the pop-up, will be nice not schlepping the tent to this one!

Stoke&Smoke
08-26-2009, 02:25 PM
Bump!

To those that did this comp last year, what is the water availability? Should we bring a hose and splitter or just containers? Also, is the church lot gravel or smooth?

thanks

Scottie
08-26-2009, 02:49 PM
containers... It's a asphalt parking lot...

Brew-B-Q
08-26-2009, 03:14 PM
Dann, I don't think there's any electric in the church lot this year either.

Scottie
08-26-2009, 03:16 PM
I was told that the chuch lot is no electric. If you want electric you have to be on the Resevoir St.

I'll be running my generator...

Stoke&Smoke
08-26-2009, 05:09 PM
As will we. We got sick of the tent and bought a used pop-up. It's just way easier to set up, unpack, pack, and teardown!

It has AC which kinda needs either power or a generator, so we got a honda 3000 handi. We were looking ahead to comps like Shannon (which I hope won't be the same weekend as Lowell, MI next year)

We can haul about 30 or so gallons, but we'll bring jugs.
Thanks for the answers folks!

Scottie

So come on, 5 more teams!

Are any of you doing the People's Choice Chicken competition? For $1000 prize I'd like to do it, but logistically I don't see how. They are starting it at 3:30 on Saturday, after the KCBS awards, and you have to move to a different spot. Between the turn ins, cleaning up and packing our stuff and the awards ceremony I don't see how it is possible to cook the chicken and be set up in a new spot.

Brew-B-Q
08-31-2009, 06:49 AM
Ron, same thoughts here. No way can we move and get set-up in time to do it right.

Stoke&Smoke
08-31-2009, 11:47 AM
Would make more sense to do it earlier, huh?

On a different note, did anyone see the Diners, drive in's, and dives that featured the Mexican place Cempazuchi? Looked amazing, and it looks like it's only a mile from the contest site. We're considering an outing

It's not the time that is the issue so much as the fact that it's being held on a different street from where we'll be set up. I could see myself running over a few foil pans of chicken to set up on a plastic table, only to find myself next to a guy with a huge pit serving chicken hot off the grill. Even if mine tastes better, people are going to vote for the guy with the nice setup, not the guy that looks like he is serving carry-out.

I did not see that episode - I was actually planning on running up to Jake's Deli, which is within a few miles, to get some corned beef and pastrami sandwiches.

Stoke&Smoke
08-31-2009, 12:23 PM
No, you're right about the timing and location issues. I think we'll just take a pass on that comp. 1000 sounds nice though doesn't it?

Brew-B-Q
08-31-2009, 02:13 PM
Yeah, they give you the chicken too, I think. We create enough issues for ourselves as it is, so we'll just focus on the main competition.

Does anyone know how many teams are signed up?

Ron_L
08-31-2009, 02:25 PM
Scottie was keeping a running total and I think he was up to 21 or 22.

They do give you 30 lbs of chicken thighs. Besides the changing locations there isn't time to cook them if you want to tear down and go to the award ceremony. Oh well...

Scottie
08-31-2009, 02:46 PM
Still needs a few more teams... tried getting her to go up to the contests the last 2 weekends, but she wasn't able to make them to recruit...

So if it doesn't make it to 25, at least they have a good prize fund... It would suck if this was a first GC for someone and it's not a qualifier though...

They had a team drop because their smoker is not working... So it's at 21 if Moe and Shad come...

Wish I knew how to try and get more... But there doesn't seem to be any kind of rush from anyone... So oh well...

That's a pretty tough field for 25 teams! Reminds me of this year's Hannibal contest.
Congrats to all that walk!

Kim and Andy, YOU are MY team of the year! See you in a couple of weeks!

Scottie: I tried to get Kim and Andy to pick me up on the way through so I could meet you this weekend, but something about an "anniversary" and "alone time" got in the way...

Kim and Andy, what a great way to celebrate an anniversary!!! Great to meet you guys in person after seeing you for 2 years on this site!

Scottie, congrats as always! And for recruiting extra teams!

And congrats to everyone who took a walk! (or two, or three:lol:

We managed to once again be the last team out, but part of that was the first time using the pop up. It also didn't help that at one point, we had to unpack the truck to unbury a set of jumper cables to help out another team that had run thier battery down with thier radio!

I guess the neighborhood must have been dicier last year from what I'd heard, because this year I never felt we were really in any kind of a dangerous area! Really nice folks all around, from Marjorie and her crew, to the security folks, even to the folks passing by checking us out!

We'll definitely be back next year if finances allow!

Thanks Kick!
Actually, I think they'll be joining the ranks of the brethren after talking with us! This was their first ever comp. They unpacked and set up a CAB onsite, and did all thier meats in either it or a homemade drum they had. No EZ up, no lights, no frills! They also realized they'd forgotten garnish Saturday morning, so we tossed 'em 6 or 8 bunces of parsley and 5 heads of curly leaf. We had way more than we needed. They were right next to Ronelle and the Parsley Lady!

Ember was happy to see her pal Maggie, as were we to see Walt and Theresa! (and Ramona)

I have to also say, the 9:22 shot was amazing to me. The church priest, (Father Mike?) did the prayer. Now, I'm not catholic (although the shot fairy is) but I got more out of that brief prayer than I do from most whole sermons I've heard! What a great guy! And he even had a shot of GJ along with the rest of us!

Wasn't our best contest in terms of placing, but against that field I felt we did ok, and I think this was the most fun we've had at a comp! Meant to get into Walt's bar, but just got to talking with some of the folks just outside and never made it in!

That shot was special. Not often you have a catholic priest having one written for us bbqr's. And Dann, I have said all along that it was a nice neighborhood. A ton of security and I think they had the entire Milwaukee police bike patrol in our locations. Breakfast that they provided was awesome as well. Marjorie did a good job. Next time, I'm not recruiting Andy and Kim though!!! lol

I guess Marjorie also took care of them for a special anniversary meal Friday night. Very cool.

Dann and Diane have one the busiest looking comp sites I've ever seen. I think they even bring a kitchen sink!!! ;-)

Lastly, go get 'em Walt. I hope the lucky 'shot' from Islay and the inspirational pipes on Saturday worked for you as well as me!!!! Good luck this Jack year!

Scottie, you're right, you had said all along it was a good location. Having grown up in the Detroit area, I have a different idea of what a "bad neighborhood" is than some others, and this wasnt one!
Yeah, we do pack too heavy, and are working on paring that load down!

Yeah... It's all your fault!

Seriously, thanks for recruiting enough teams to get to the 25 team minimum!

I agree that the neighborhood wasn't bad. I did wonder at the number of discarded baby pacifiers laying around the parking lot  Father Mike was great! He even made sure that he hugged everyone who had gathered for his blessing and the shot.

It was very nice to have good weather for a change! I hope my coughing didn't keep everyone awake. I know I would have enjoyed the competition a whole lot more if I could breathe

Congrats to Andy & Kim! It was great meeting you finally! I hope the girls had a nice weekend! They are adorable!

Congrats to Scottie and his girls and everyone else who walked!

Dann... As soon as I read your post about helping a team who had run down their battery with the radio my first thought was Big Boys, the guy next to us. That was very nice of you to help them.

Also very good to see old friends like Scottie and crew (thanks for the inspiration), Skinny Cooks, Ember, Ron and Amy, Logjammin, Alex and Kate, Brew-B-Q, Joel, Mike and Beth and new folks like the Moose's BBQ, Woodfellow and Smoking Addiction.

Thanks again Ramona, aka Kathy, aka The Weather Lady who not only produced the best weather of all time but helped a bunch and got the boxes safely down the hill.

Smoke On Wheels not only won, but by a country mile........:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap

What an AMAZING Weekend. It was great to finally meet everyone we had not met before. Always love going to a comp with Brethren-- you immediately feel at home. By home, I mean walking into Bud and Tonto's kick arse bus, and snaggin' the last mojito in the batch!!!

A quick rundown of the fun:

First, When we showed up at 7:30 on Friday morning, Cleveland had donuts for our girls ready to go when we pulled in! (he thought they might be hungry)

Once we were set up and other teams were arriving, we went over to the church lot, and immediately ran into Lou from Woodfellas... I thought Boondoggle might be there too, since I saw don's truck... But Lou said he was cookin' solo, and swapped rides with Don to get his trailer out there!

We got to meet Walt and Theresa, and find out about our "special" location, and the fun one of the judges had the prior year on Friday night (falling into their cooker). Then, as I mentioned, I got to enjoy a great mojito, and my girls, broke a surprise a little early, by spying a cake with our names on it on their side table. :-P They had an anniversary cake for us!!! How AWESOME is that!!! What a great surprise, so we got to share that with everyone after cooks meeting... and then some Sat. morning breakfast:twisted:

After cake on Friday night, I was looking for someplace nice to take Kim for dinner, and Marjorie had keyed me into a nice little Italian place in the old tavern/tap room of the Schlitz Brewery. NEAT location. So she offers to take us over so we dont have to drive, and we have a wonderful dinner... As we are finishing... out comes a fresh canolli and tiramisu, and the owner... Who wishes us a happy anniversary, and asks if our meal was up to snuff. (of course it was).... So after we thank him, we attempt to pay for our meal and head back... and find out that there is no bill!!! Marjorie had it all set up and covered, before we arrived.

Sat. they had a wonderful breakfast for us from wildflour bakery, as well as other breakfast items, fruit, yougurt, etc. The event went off without a hitch. Lots of folks out with all the wonderful weather... not anyone we didnt meet that wasn't super nice. We even had a local following at awards... (pics coming) - what a great bunch of folks who are all behind the revitalization of that neighborhood.

the awards were GREAT too.... but really that was all icing on the cake, after such a wonderful weekend with great friends, and new friends to boot. We are still in shock.

Are you kidding???? Nice neighborhood??? I guess any neighborhood would be nice with the entire Milwaukee police bike patrol. I can't remember the last comp I went to where there was more security than competitors.

It was a nice neighborhood... on Friday night, we were parked directly in front of the local haunt, (only bar in the whole area) and our truck was parked on 4th street, not in a private lot....

Every local we met was very nice... Mitchell (one neighbor from a block over) brought us Tea from his garden in the morning. the other neighbors, offered up anything we needed... and the folks in the flats behind us were also very nice. Yes, it is rough around the edges, I wouldnt walk around alone at 2am 4 blocks over.... but at the same token, another 60 yr. old gentleman was walking his dog at 11pm when I was putting my meat on...

The St. Francis folks were all super nice as well. thier facilities man, was shuttling water, etc. for folks, and Father Mike provided a very fitting, and moving prayer for us on Sat. morning. Not that Randy isn't moving, when he presides over the the shot.... but this was very special indeed. Dann and Scottie both nailed it. What a way to kick start Sat. morning routine.

I know I left several things out... but wanted to knock a post out as soon as we walked in the door... Thanks for a great weekend everyone.
We will be back next fall!

Special thanks to Scottie... for trying to help me line up a cooker, and the impetus for our trip in the first place. Thanks for the invitation. And thanks to everyone else for the hostpitality to the KC BBQ Vagabonds.

As I mentioned above, Andy, it was great to meet you and Kim and the girls! Your girls are adorable! (You are too, but i know that you asked me to stop saying that in public ).

Now... the next time Scottie calls and invites you to a competition in our area, please say no? :-D

What happened with the People's Choice chicken competition? It would have been great to stay for that but I was dead on my feet and we had a dog to get home to.

OK...guilty! Sorry guys, this was our eighth comp overall, not counting the burnoff, we're still newbies. Getting a top 5 call is still a pretty big rush for us!

We'll try and be more subdued in the future!

Anyway, we finally got things unpacked, and let the adrenaline wear off a little, and wanted to say congrats again to all who walked. I had missed that Brew-B-Q had calls in 3 out of 4, nice job Pat and Dan. Honestly, the awards are all a bit of a fog....and didn't they actually start a little before 3? As we got there they were at 6th place chicken and I think it was 2:58~ No matter, we weren't going to get a call in chicken anyway!

I think I already geve big props to Andy and Kim, but Andy stopped by Friday night while I was prepping brisket, and was very kind. So nice of Marjorie to set up dinner for you guys, and I can't think of anyone more deserving of such treatment, you both were great! Di said she met the girls, I don't think I had the pleasure

Scottie, thanks for storing the Gentleman Jack in your freezer! Lizanne (sp?) Thanks for saying hi and giving some love to the little monkey face!

Ron and Amy, as always, thanks for the coffee! And the great company Friday night.

Cubby Bear Joel, great as always seeing you and your bud!

Walt and Theresa, thanks so much for your ongoing hospitality! And Ember says say thanks for letting her play a while with Maggie before you guys left!

And Porkrastinators Kate, great to see you looking relaxed and feeling more yourself, Alex, sorry we didn't see ya much, I know you had stuff to deal with over your dog, and our sympathies for your loss...sorry Ember didn't get to meet Junior.

All in all, thanks to all the Brethren, and even the non-brethren, for the great first half to the holiday weekend!

Hope to see you all again soon! Good luck to those heading to the Royal or the Jack!

What happened with the People's Choice chicken competition? It would have been great to stay for that but I was dead on my feet and we had a dog to get home to.

Moose got RGC, and the People's choice was 3 Musketeers. I believe they have a restaurant locally. Trying to rally with 30lbs of chicken, and get it back to the tables, etc. wiped us out. It was alot of fun, but I doubt we'll do it next year, unless the timing is different.

It was great getting to sit down with you and Amy, and take a load off. I'll be posting the MOINK pics with the girls. Thank you so much, for the Hospitality...I think I will drink some Brethren Blend right now :eusa_clap

Dann - for us, it's never not a rush. So don't ever get more subduded. Enjoy every one!! I am still shocked when I hear my name. :eusa_clap

And I think they did start a little early... we were about 100 yards from the area where everyone was sitting in front of the stage, and heard our name, but didnt know for what.... and by the time we got there, they had started ribs, Scottie told us that we had won chicken!!

Thank you for the compliment, I don't know that we are deserving of any special treatment, but it sure did make us feel special. With everything going on, and the fact she had been working for over 12 hours that day alone.... to take the time to put that together, well... Marjorie is A1 in our book. And being able to have an impromtu party with everyone on Friday after cooks meeting, well, it just doesnt get any better than that. What a fun time, thanks to Walt and Theresa!! since we have some time to plan for next year... Party will be at our spot!!!:-P
