So, are you? This is the time of year when folks begin to turn their attention to the fall invitationals. Makes sense. We all need to plan. The American Royal invites went out on Monday. August is the last chance to qualify for the Jack Daniel's World Invitational draw. In fact, there are about 35 events left this month and assuming they meet the qualifying criteria, they will count towards the draw. Just for fun, here's a COMPLETELY UNOFFICIAL look at how the draw is shaking out thus far:

UPDATE: So, now I've included the IBCA qualifiers thanks to Lynn Shivers and Michelle Wade. Sometimes I need two mothers. Sometimes more. That changed things a bit. A few teams came off the "Automatics" list and at least one went on. It did change things a bit.

Several disclaimers: This list now only tracks qualifiers for KCBS and IBCA events. Information on MIM, MBN and FBA is not included. That's why there are question marks after Swamp Boys. Rub was congratulated for winning seven some time back on the forum, but it obviously included FBA events. Additonally, this list doesn't account for home state winners, teams in states where no other team from the state won a qualifying event regardless of location. Well, it does include Parrothead and Tee Wayne's Cajun Cookin'. Parrothead waltzs into the Jack every year this way. We're considering a move to South Dakota. Here's what I do know, if I really wanted into the Jack, I'd be headed to Maine, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Utah this month.

This is worth saying one more time - This list was composed just for fun and without the help of any of the sanctioning bodies. I just thought you all might enjoy a look at where the draw is headed next month. I can't believe the response this list has generated. It was a fun project and several of you pointed out corrections that I've made. Now get out there and qualify for the Jack!

I know that it can get kind of in depth and confusing but how does it work with the "home" state thing? If a team with a GC is the only one from their state to win do they get a automatic draw?

For example if Smoke on Wheels wins New Paltz does Smoke in Da Eye get the NY draw as the only team from NY in the NY draw?

Do both the home and foreign teams get an invite if the foreign team gets the draw?

Also if you have an automatic bid, you are no longer in the draw are you? ie., Lakeside Smokers is no longer in the NY draw due to their automatic bid (I assume that is for winning NH?)

man this is such a fun time of year, how fun is it going to be talking about this @ the potluck this weekend @ New Paltz!

SIDE should be an automatic since he is the only NY home state team in the draw. EDIT: I think they draw the NY state and then declare him in if he didn't get the state draw. So, he's automatic (I think), but could still get the NY State draw. The Home state is kind of a fall back. This happened to Missouri last year. No MO teams were drawn, so they chose a home state team. Automatics, like Sled, don't count for home state teams, so Sled wouldn't prohibit SIDE from getting NY Home State.

Since Lakeside is automatic, they are out of the draw for any other state. You can't get drawn twice.

Even with two draws in Kansas, it is still a long shot to get to the Jack. However, just like last year, it is exciting just to be part of the day. To know that is COULD happen is better than knowing that it COULDN'T.

This is the question that we have: Do they do the state draws in alphabetical order or randomly?

Todd, are you saying that you think they first randomly draw the order that they do the states?

And people wonder why I'm so pissy when it comes to state qualifiers. Because Williepalooza 2 was declared a first year contest and a qualifier after the fact and a NY resident won, I don't believe there is a NY state wild card and I have to wish for the best in the draw.

Feel free to attack me but it's kind of a joke.

I'm all for more contests, I'd just prefer they were scheduled for the season and work with the big shows to do it legit, not twist some things a couple weeks in advance (or at awards). They don't add games to the hockey season and they don't add extra holes in a golf tourney (unless it is a playoff).

FYI, I'm not going to the Jack or Royal this year because I don't believe I'm ready to do them right (ie teammates, vacation time, and money). I'm simply in this discussion because I think the rules need to be better defined.

SIDE, why would you get pissy when yo have already stated that you aren't going anyway?

If we take you at your word, than the qualifiers have no bearing on you personally, at least not this year.

I can certainly appreciate your passion for everything BBQ, and grilling, but I don't understand what appears to me as inconsistent statements. But then maybe I'm just too simple.

No pass downs. If a team doesn't fill out the application, they will not be in the draw. If a team does and then doesn't go, would be palin wrong.

Back off. I should have some right to participate in a discussion regarding the status of my possible automatic invite to the Jack. The personal attacks on me are getting to be a little ridiculous. Since when do I have to clear my schedule with everyone on this forum????

I see Darren Worth has 5 GC's this year ... he's got 3 more weeks to get 2 more to be an auto (end of August right?). At least he's in 4 different state draws

http://www.thepickledpig.com/PPapps/rankings/TeamHistory.cfm?team=IOWAS%20SMOKEY%20DS%20BBQ

that's just sick - only once since changing from Smokin Clones to IA Smokey D's has he finished outside of the top 10.

yeah, I have heard he is pretty good.

I also heard that Iola--his last contest and GC--was his 25th Grand Championship. That is unworldly.

I would definitely like to see him get the auto-bid--he deserves it, especially after not getting drawn last year. I also hope he gets drawn for more selfish reasons--my odds go way up.

"Stressful" is Draw Day! Last year we were wrecks all day, frantically refreshing windows on three different sites to see if anyone had heard anything yet. When we finally saw our team name, honest to God we were jumping up and down and screaming.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The wait for the draw to be over.

Was it there? Mine wasn't... /jk

Received at 12:27 from Michelle Eslich. I can send you contact info if it doesn't show up soon (wasn't sure if it would be cool to share on an open forum so I removed below). There are maybe 50 email addresses on it.

BTW, why do they want to know the size of my cooker? It's 18.5" x 4 I guess.

Congratulations!

Your team has qualified for the 21st Annual 2009 Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue draw on Sept 3, 2009
Entry forms have been mailed, however if you do not receive your packet, I have attached a copy of the entry form.
If you have any questions or if you would like to have a copy of the qualifying criteria, please email me at xyz.com (http://us.mc1112.mail.yahoo.com/mc/[email protected]) or call the BBQ hotline at 931-759-6930.

Space is tight in the holler, and they measure out the spaces pretty accurately for the equipment being brought. We have a small footprint, so we were pretty comfy, but some people with RVs and big cookers were working things out to the inch.

No jokes, that application put me in a cold sweat today. Any vets who can help me and anyone throwing their hat in to the draw for the first time would much appreciated:

I understand the reason for the "how big is your cooker and do you have an RV question" after the explanation above, though I hate to screw myself for answering wrong. My setup can't even take up a 20x20 space. Are some sites better than others (I've seen power and water are tough in some spots) and is it better to be big n bold or lean n mean or is everyone there fighting the same issues in the same space?

The part about what contests you won and what place you came in and if you lie you are disqualified? I just listed the one contest I won, the date, first place overall, and the place it was. It was just confusing that it said to list contests you won then list what place you came in (sorry, i hate to mess anything up)

And the list of 8 team mates? For me, right now it's me cooking solo style. Should teams fill it with names just in case they get in and some folks come to help out or is it not that seriously controlled?

Finally the extra categories, are those done the same day as the main game? I wouldn't mind playing in a couple but wouldn't dare do it solo the same day as the big four. It's hard to find a real time table for the whole event. Should applicants just check the boxes and decide later should they get fortunate enough to get in????

Clint - I can't help on the space questions and how it impacts where you get placed but here's my thoughts on the others..

1) extra categories are on the same day - it seemed a bit overwhelming doing the ancillaries even with Andy doing Chef's choice, all of us working on dessert(s) and Sean and I doing a clusterfark of a 37 ingredient sauce in additional to all of us doing the main 4.

as far as the teammate names, even if your bro John can't make it, you might want to put his name down or even your dad, mom etc.. They give you one fake leather/plastics ID badge holders that say Jack Daniels BBQ etc with your full name and team name. It's a nice keepsake. Sean and I are lucky - Phil did such a wonderful job on the application that my ID says "Vinny Militanti" and Muzzlebrake's says Sean Muzzolo"

Chicken is minimum 7 pieces (for Old No. 7) of which some portion must be white meat.

Clint...
you NEED to get help, at the very least for running your boxes. I don't think you could get back from chicken turn-in in time to get the ribs turned in, depending on where you are located.
We were at the VERY END of the park... at the furthest possible point from the judges tent I think. We had 4 people block the crowds (and I DO mean CROWDS) in front of Sully and even with our clock the customary 5 minutes ahead of real time, they left before the window opened (11:50ish). They did not get back until almost 12:15. If you are solo, where is the time for cutting and getting the ribs in the box? And from then on it just gets later and later and later...

hope this helps and is not meant to scare ya!

Alexa RnQ

Honestly, I think everyone has space issues. It's cheek-by-jowl there. We have a similar setup to yours, 10x20 w/ 4 WSMs, and although in a smaller space we had a bit of elbow room. I don't know if any site selection was offered, basically there's one row that will accommodate really big RVs, then everybody else shoehorns in as best they can. Sites are clearly marked, and a golf cart escorted us to our assigned space when we got in the gate.

If they are offering the option of private porta-potties again this year, GET ONE. Cooking on your own you will have NO time to be running back and forth. Best money we ever spent -- and if it's raining again, it's worth that much more.

So the draw just got more interesting for a few folks...

Rythym and Que just got their 7th GC this weekend, so that makes Scottie an automatic for Arizona! Congrats to R&Q and Scottie.

But... This also makes Michigan and Wisconsin more interesting...

MICHIGAN
All Day Smoke
CancerSucksChicago.com
Smokin' Scotsmen X 2
Pork of the North
Mt. Morris, MI Winner*

Take out Cancer Sucks and that gives the Scotsmen a 2 in 5 chance! Possibly a 3 in 5 if they can win at Mt. Morris! Go Scotsmen!

WISCONSIN
CancerSucksChicago.com X 2
Dr. Porkenstein
Deforest/Windsor, WI Winner* (Jelly Roll Jones)
Westfield, WI Winner*
Princeton, WI Winner*

Take out Scottie's 2 wins and Dr. P and Jelly Roll Jones have a 1 in 4 chance. If either of them can win one of the two remaining comps that's 50% chance! Or... If someone can win both of the remaining comps they would be in very good shape!

Should be fun in Westfield and Princeton!

What happens if a state had one state championship and the winner of that contest already has an auto from another state?

Ex: The New Hampshire winner is an auto
This coming weekend the New Holland PA contest is an auto as well

Lets say the NH winner also wins PA this weekend and wins , does that mean PA does not get represented?

This is gonna be fun...I was just looking through the draw info and the teams list on Pellet Envy's blog and started figuring our odds. This weekend will mean a lot to my teams chances. With odds being 20%, 33%, or 50% depending on this weekends results:-D

It will be fun either way, I know how lucky we are to even be in the mix our first year out. I went ahead and took a vacation day Sept 3rd and I look forward to sipping Jack and hitting the refresh button:lol:

Todd any chance your connection from the Jack will disclose how tight the info will be this year...I'm guessing it will be like 2008 with all the info coming at once several hours after it begins (as opposed to leaking out of names at a slower pace in prior years)?

Is there anyone here who will be live at the draw?

I could potentially set up a feed from twitter (hashtag #jackdraw or something) that would auto update and everyone (with an Internet connection) could then see the play by play.

Provided someone present could send in tweets (can be via txt/sms too).

Heck I might even be able to setup a call in # that would be 1-many where someone could do this verbally instead of trying to type it all out. This would allow everyone else to call in and listen or maybe listen by PC.

Not that I'll have any way to validate the accuracy.

I recall in past years there was no real central place to watch the drama unfold. Some forums had some info others, had other info (not divergent info - just different pieces).

Right on Scottie. When I have attended the draw I had a legal pad and took notes, but no phone usage in the room allowed. Some folks got up and left the room to call in some updates to folks, but even that was frowned upon. It is all the mystery and mystique of "The Jack". The other issue is that, as you know, cell phone service is "spotty" in the holler at best...

I'm pretty sure Sled takes that out, but it isn't 100% clear based on their written explanation. Sled wasn't "drawn", but I'm pretty sure he was "automatically drawn".

(1) If there are numerous Grand Champions from any state and none of their names have been drawn, all Grand Champions from that state will go into a draw to determine who represents their home state.

Speaking from experience here . . it's not as much "mystique" as it is a desire to make sure the info that goes out is correct. I called a buddy one year to let him know he was in, but there was a mistake, which they caught quickly, and I had to call him back and tell him he wasn't in. Then, later, he did get in after all. Needless to say, I never did that again. I wait until they put the final "seal of approval" on it before I say anything.

This is a HUGE, complicated, process and they don't need people reporting things too soon.

Good luck everybody who has a bung!

That's the way it was explained to me, all automatics don't factor in to the draw process but I could be wrong.

That's how it worked last year for us in Arizona. There were three teams with GCs but one of those was for an automatic contest in Nevada. When the other two didn't get drawn in their respective state draws, (we were one of those two teams), they put our bungs in to a Home State Rep draw and we won that draw.

Does that help clear things up a bit?

Good deal. It is a little complicated. I don't envy the folks trying to run this and keep it straight. All of the refactoring that has to happen after each draw is a little mind boggling.

That's the main reason they don't want results posted ahead of time. So they can try and correct things as it unfolds. As you can imagine, a lot of things can easily be missed...

They'll release an official roster of all the teams who have been invited which will then be posted here and at other internet forums. They'll then send the official invitations to each team via snail mail.

Ok so just to make sure I understand this correclty...here is the Minnesota list for the draw:
MINNESOTA
The Heat is On
Iowa's Smokey D's
Tippy Canoe BBQ Crew
Parrothead Smokers
Prairie Oak Smokers

Parrothead is the only SD home based GC this year so he is an Automatic...so will his bung be removed before the Mn draw?

Vince RnQ
08-31-2009, 05:33 PM
No, that's not how it would work unless Parrothead had won a contest that was an "automatic". They will be included in the draw for MN unless they are drawn for another state before the MN state draw takes place. (I don't know how many draws that team has so disregard if MN is their only GC.) If Parrothead isn't drawn in MN or any other state, they will go to the Jack as the SD Home State Rep but there will be no need for a SD Home State Rep if they get drawn in a state draw.

Clear as mud yet?

Vince RnQ

This might help to explain things a little better...

The Jack folks are going to do things in a certain order and, unless I'm mistaken, it will be something like this:

Determine all the "Automatic" teams based upon 7+ GCs and automatic state contests, like New Holland, PA and Boulder City, NV. Teams that meet those criteria will be removed from all state draws.

Next will be the State Draws and the order of the states will be selected randomly. Once a team is drawn from a state, they will be removed from any other states in which they have GCs.

After all the state draws are done, any state that had a GC team that didn't get selected in the state draws will be put into Home State Draws. That is were a team like Parrothead would get their invitation as they are the only SD team with a GC but if there had, for example, been two SD teams with GCs then they would be put into a two team draw and the winner would get the invite.

Finally, after all the Home State draws are done, they'll put all the remaining teams back into the hopper and pull one bung. That team will then be invited as the Wild Card team.

I think that covers it!

And in the Wild Card draw, you get one bung. Doesn't matter how many qualifiers you won. It is just a little different from the state draws.

If a team from the state is represented, then they do not draw another... for example, KS does not have a state draw, since a KS team is already in.

Since Sled is a NY state team, he would cover the home state draw for NY...

Just like if Parrothead wins somewhere outside of SD... they dont have a separate state draw, for SD, if he gets an entry in the other state....he is the representitive, if he gets a draw from someplace.

With all the anxiety out there, maybe they should, SECRETLY, have the draw tonight and then post the results at midnight. That way people would just wake up in the morning and see the results. No sweating or worrying! Wouldn't that be cool!!

Even better would be to have everyone that is in the draw come to Lynchburg the Wednesday before the actual Jack, park outside the site, have the draw, then allow only those chosen into the park. Everybody else would just meet in a field outside of town and have their own contest. THEN, the two winners would compete head to head the next day. (This is why they don't let me help with the draw.)

21st Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue

Draw for “The Jack”

Because “The Jack” is a promotion for the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey brand, we want to have every state that has a qualifying contest or every state that has a “Grand Champion” residing in that state to be included in our competition.

The final list of teams begins with:

(1)Grand Champions of the following competitions:
·21st Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue
·2008 American Royal Open Competition
·2009 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Barbecue
·2009 Memphis in May Championship and

(2)Teams winning a competition that is the only qualifier in a state.

Next:

(3)For the remaining states that have more than one qualifying contest, team names will go into state draws one time for every contest they have won in each state – i.e. two wins in Tennessee will get your name in the Tennessee draw two times. (State draws will be conducted randomly.)

(4)If any team is the only “Grand Champion” from its home state and it has not been selected via a state draw, that team will be invited to represent its state. Home state is determined by the address of the chief cook.

(5)If there are numerous Grand Champions from any state and none of their names have been drawn, all Grand Champions from that state will go into a draw to determine who represents their home state.

(6)After all draws are completed, remaining teams will have one last chance in our “Wild Card” draw. Each team’s name will be placed in the “wild card” draw one time and one last team will be invited.)

NOTE: As the draw progresses from state to state, additional teams may make the list by “default.” For example: If TN has seven teams in its draw, GA has three, VT has two, and CA has four, and Team A has wins in all four states and its name is pulled in the TN draw, the team whose name remains in the draw for VT would, by “default,” represent VT. Clear as mud? Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

Teams that are "automatic", those in 1 & 2 above, are not considered as being in the draw so they don't count against a team being a Home State Rep.

Best of luck to all who, like us, are hoping for a draw.

As my best friend from near Lynchburg would say: "We're more nervous than a long tail cat in a room full of rockin' chairs".

For those waiting to hear their name called, enjoy the day. I hope that no matter what your "odds", you appreciate what it took for you to even have a chance. There are literally thousands of other teams who are not practicing their good luck rituals today. You are among the few and the proud for this year's draw.

It is a joy and honor just to have something to hope for today. This is my second year in the draw. I'm less nervous, but just as excited.

Our most sincere best wishes to all of you waiting to see if you were called. I look forward to raising a toast to (and with) some who will have gotten the news when we see you tomorrow in Milwaukee!

Not sure who'll be doing the 9:22, but thanks for the blessing bestowed on those fortunate enough to make the draw should certainly be mentioned:grin:

To those who are eligible, but whose names aren't called, as it's already been said here, you still have lots of reason to hold your heads high! There are a lot more of us that have never qualified, but hope to someday!

To Lynchburg!

I tried to talk my wife in to doing a shot with me, but she wouldn't go for it. (she is a dentist and muttered something about ethics and losing a license; it was all gibberish to me)

Now that is funny:lol: My wife also mentioned this whole loss of job thing too when I mentioned it this morning:mrgreen: Did you take the day off Ryan? I had some time I needed to use and took today and tomorrow off to make it a 5 day weekend!

Taking tomorrow off to head down to Windsor, MO for a comp, so I am working today. Everyone in my office knows what is going on though and I am going right now to get a mini bottle of Jack to carress all morning and afternoon.
