there's a Super 8 right off the thruway, its not the greatest. Newburgh or across the bridge in Poughkeepsie is the next closest and you have your choice. Unles you want to spring for the Mohonk House

Kingston. One exit north has several nice hotels. 20 minutes north

20 minutes from the Thruway, which on a weekend in New Paltz can be 45 minutes from the fairgrounds easily.........

if you take the back way out of comp (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=County+Rte-7%2FLibertyville+Rd+to:41.72181,-74.145312+to:41.506842,-74.069352&hl=en&geocode=FauifAIdYQaV-w%3BFYCXfAIdnuWU-w%3B%3BFRpYeQIdmMqV-w&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=15&via=1,2&sll=41.721426,-74.138789&sspn=0.015439,0.028925&ie=UTF8&ll=41.669257,-74.114799&spn=0.015452,0.028925&t=h&z=15) you can be in Newburgh and find a good hotel in about a 30 minute ride. Anybody got a good contact number for Stephanie or others coordinating the contest? I'm trying to get in touch with them to find out if they have space left (RV space that is...) and the number listed on their application always says that "the service is not available now, try again later." I sent in an email on Wednesday and haven't heard back. We are hoping to fit this one in.

The hotel next to the Blue Moon is a Red Roof it's on Rt 299 and bit of a hole,

a little further out of town is an Econolodge, also on Rt 299 quality is unknown,

and if you would take Rt 299 all the way to the intersection with Rt 9W (6 miles east of I-87), there is a Super 8 that is about 4 yrs old and worlds better cleaner/quieter and likely a few bucks less...

Super 8 Highland NY
3423 Route 9 West I 87 Exit
Highland, NY 12528

(845) 691-6888‎

If you need to get through town on the weekend from the fairgrounds it can be almost 25 minutes back to the thruway same as coming from the thruway to the fairgrounds. Sometimes it is more. (all you long islanders and Jersey people going for "a ride in the country" )

Question about the grilling contest. Does open garnish mean that you can have your servings in individual portion cups and they can eat it with forks or spoons? I cant find the rules on the NEBS website. THX

CTSmokehouse
08-01-2009, 08:18 PM
Looking at their rules... OPEN Garnish and
stuffing is allowed....

I think that it means that if it edible you can put it on top or in the container...but it still needs to be put in the requisite container...I don't think you can put in cups etc.. which are not edible...

I think that fingers are the utensils...

INMHO...

From the NEBS Grilling Rules:

OPEN GARNISH – Anything goes. Chefs Choice or Dessert must use Open
Garnish. Stuffing, wrapping, skewers, and decorations of any kind
edible or not are allowed. Any size chunks or ingredients can be used.
Cooks should remember the judges will be instructed to evaluate how
well the cook has represented the contest category. Excessive garnish
or additional ingredients, that cover or hide the appearance and/or
taste of the defined category, may result in a lower score

Anything edible or not is allowed. I used little cups and utensils at NH this year and got it all back.

To the seasoned vets out there,

I read in the last mail from the organizers that Ulster county has a no smoking law on public land. Since this is my first comp I do not want to cause the organizers or myself any issue but look at my handle for crying out loud. Not being able to have a cigar while watching my drum temps for hours is going to be a problem. Since you can't put a cigar into a red plastic cup I am at a loss here. Anyone experience this before. Is it ok late at night when the general public is not there? Thanks.

Go for it. I'll join you. We can claim we are "smoking tongue" for the comp.

I quit coffin nails 15 years ago and don't miss it but I do like a nice cigar once in a while.

While I like the restaurant ban, am half-n-half on bars, but public places like beaches and parks is TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. The liberals have gone overboard.

I'm pretty sure that all has to do with litter. Just a way of keeping cigarette butts off the grass. I'm sure you'll know if its a bad time but as Vinny said I didn't see an enforcement last year.

I'm not an official, but I am competing. My take is "Yes, any cut of steak" and "Yes, you can pool and drizzle since it's open garnish." Also "Yes, 6 dessert servings must fit in the box." Only the Pizza will have a special container (provided) from my understanding.

See you there!

I don't know why the grilling rules aren't back up on the NEBS site!
If anyone wants them just PM me and I will get them out to you asap.

...from the official 2009 NEBS Grilling Rules...

OPEN GARNISH – Anything goes. Chefs Choice or Dessert must use Open Garnish. Stuffing, wrapping, skewers, and decorations of any kind edible or not are allowed. Any size chunks or ingredients can be used. Cooks should remember the judges will be instructed to evaluate how well the cook has represented the contest category. Excessive garnish or additional ingredients, that cover or hide the appearance and/or taste of the defined category, may result in a lower score

Just make sure to confirm with the organizers that it is 'NEBS open garnish'!!!

FYI there are no "Little Old Ladies" in Rotary...They are the movers and shakers, leaders in the community...most are quite young...Rotary was the first international service organization and is the only service organization with a seat at the UN. The Highland Rotary Club had 40 members when the started this comp... It is their 25th year.. Rotary International is over 100 plus years old and in most countries in the world...Their goal is to eradicate Polio in the world and it is almost 98% with help from Bill Gates Foundation...

This is a fun competition and they probably will have as much fun or more announcing all the creative names in the contest...!

It was great to meet some of you in person and see what the comps look like in person.

Thanks again for the great hospitality and the awesome "tastes" (BEST shrimp ever Diva!) and all the encouragement to get my butt out to a comp.
You guys are the best.

What a great weekend! The Rotary does a great Job!
They did improve the Trophy ceremony, I just didn't like the many comments on a cheap, plastic trophy. It was like you did all this hard work for a cheap piece of plastic! I guess he doesn't get (appreciate) what competing is all about, it is not what it is made off, it is what is stands for! - Again, Great Job and Congrats to everybody, I talked to a few judges and they say the turn-ins are getting very competitive and they see the quality getting better. I said I attribute that to teams attending classes like ISS and Ique. I know it helped me.! well not this weekend! lol

Very high scores for this area.. 661.7 for GC and RGC was just below. 660 for 3rd and 649 in fourth place. Last year GC points were 646 and RGC was 629.. This year, 626 was 19th place.

PS - to the judges that actually liked our abomination of our apple category submission.. THANK YOU !!!

Started as a baked apple stuffed with some chocolate but we forgot it was in the pit as they became mushy apple sauce balls...so we started to fark with it as a goof..peeled off the skin, rubbed with Willie B's Bourbon Rub, glazed with some Chinese Duck Sauce, and spritzed with lime juice and a chunk of leftover birthday cake from the potluck dinner the night before...

it was nasty but the judges liked it enough to score 20th... go figure...

scores are up for the NEBS grilling contests too, 669 GC 659 RGC this year. Last years 637 and 627 would have put you in 7th and 11th this year.

scores are up all across the board, last year NEBS grilling 9 out of top 10 were above 600, this year 18 out of top 20 were.

KCBS 18 out of 20 above 600 last year, this year the top 40 were all over 600

judging seemed also to be more consistent

SEAN cooked a mean grilling contest.... and I thought I was tough on my pit beeeetch; he had me peelin' peaches, trimming out tenderloins, makin guac... while he was owning the vision and the grill. GREAT clutch move to a tomatillo sauce on our pizza entry. THAT was fun as heck.

Thanks again to everyone who helped pull this weekend together for me... Muzzle, Sled, Swamp pit, Poohbah... couldnt do it without all your help.

dave - Red Planet BBQ That guy was a tool. I did not care for the end where we were brought up to be told that you are not the winner. If they were giving out and award for that place then maybe. to be brought up and sent back was real tacky. THAT was fun as heck.

no "I" in team and Kim was by far the hardest working member of ours. Sled gets funnyman of the weekend award

the end awards ceremony could be improved, it felt kinda chitty having to make that walk of shame empty handed. Never felt bad about being told I finished 4th in a comp before

I agree, no "I" in team, but having you in the lead on grilling, yielded much better results... than the last 3 events

This was my first time at this contest other than judging it 2 years ago. I have heard from many about how great it is. I had an awesome time with some all of my great friends this weekend. That being said, I have some thoughts looking at it as a competitor.

1. As mentioned in my previous post the call up for the finals without at least giving an award was real tacky.

2.Most that know me know that I am not afraid of working hard but that is the first time I have ever had to take garbage to a central location on my own. I am always hearing about how many member/volunteers the rotary club has. They cant at least send somebody around to do the trash? Like we dont have enough to do contest weekend?

3. It is nice that they have real bathroon that they keep really clean. At our end of the field they had only 5 port-a potties which were sealed off sunday morning because they werent emptied.

4. I understand that they need to make money doing this but with 61 teams the prize money seems a bit low.

5. Charging $4 a person to use the pool? They couldn't make a deal where team member use it for free? They do that at New Holland.

6. If we didn't organize our own pot luck(which it seems like everybody and their mother attended) the only thing that would of been offered to the teams was the 2 super dry pancake deal, the worst breakfast I have ever seen offered at a contest.

7. I witnessed a few golf carts but did not see any with ice on them being offered for sale. I did see quite a few people lugging bags of ice from some location

For an event in its 5th year i wouldn't expect the things I mentioned above.

Well, first off thanks for the kind words, it has been a hard chase for a GC with the new team and after Lake Placid brisket failure, it took a lot to not give up and go back to a normal hobby like hot air ballon racing.. I just wanted to say that our team is 4 people, Myself,Mike,Grace and Angela, without all of us working together we would not be enjoying the success and good times we have experienced this year. while we all may not attend or particpate in every contest, all of us are involved in the planning, packing, cooking, shopping etc for each weekend we hit the road, I can say that Mike buys his own special shorts in Greenwich Village every time he visits NYC !

Wow, we won the contest, what most of you dont know is that I was not at the awards, with the extreme heat,no breakfast, no lunch and low blood sugar, i took a nap at 1:30 and at 4:00 still was to weak to stand in sun for another hour, I only found out when Willie B woke me up to tell me we had won, its funny, I felt fine after that !!!

So if you never see me at awards again it is because I think its good luck . once again thanks and we will see you down the road

I have been reading your comments and agree with them, I will be meeting with Stephanie sometime down the road and will be sharing them and some other things with her. I can clear up some things, The Pool is owned by the County and is funded by the taxpayers, The Rotary has no power or influence on its fees, as a courtesy, the county allows the use of the showers and gives the teams the rate as a resident. The Prize Pool at $10K is one of the highest paying contests in the Northeast, in light of our current economy, I think the fact it did not go down is a plus. As for the other items, I believe that once we bring them to their attention and explain why we dont like them, they can be easily fixed.

the girl at the pool on Sunday wouldn't take my 4 ones because all she had for change was singles for the other people......would be nice for the folks with kids especially if we got a weekend pass. If you want to have fun walk into the pool with the Hot Dawg Truck guys...you could have heard the crickets! lol

Stephanie, Mike, Rolf and the crew are great people and I have no doubt they will work towards making the contest one of the premier events in the region

I may be off a bit on the #'s but this is what I recall reading

I thought it was like $8K for KCBS and $2K for grilling.

For KCBS - I thought it was like $4K for GC and RGC ($2500/$1500 split ??) and then the $4K balance split evenly between for the individual categories.

Then it hit me, yes that was pretty bad. After the MC was doing the "who do you want to win" Team 1, Team 2, etc. I just wanted to go finish packing up!

Exactly. And this information was published and available well before the event. So was the location of ice. And Ice was available for delivey each am if you turned in a coupon at thte cooks meeting.

It should be noted the County Pool has nothing to do with the County Fairgrounds. They are seperate entities.

The humiliation/embarassing of the teams @ the end is because I think people watch crap like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars and somehow think it's cool to parade the "almost winners" for entertainment. It was a bs move to not be repeated.

Maybe the KCBS should come up with a suggested guide line how to run the award ceremony (and what not to do)
I know these people running the Comp are volunteers and have good intentions, so if they had a guide line, humiliation like this could be avoided. I liked the 10-6 getting a ribbon, 5-1 going up for their award. As I said previously the jokes about winning a cheap plastic trophy are not needed. People don't realize what a grueling sport this is and by ceremony time I think we want it done quick, and acknowledge the winners in a proper manner.
Not too many sporting events that last for 2 days in extreme weather conditions and where the participants are drinking alcohol! nice combination! Maybe thats why I liked playing in a band you also got to drink on the job!:-P

I think it is only required for the categories. This is from the sanctioning agreement:

4. Prior to 90 days of the contest date, I agree to submit to KCBS a list of the total of all prize monies (including a break down by category (minimum of 5 places) and overall, and a list of trophies or recognition (minimum of 5 places) and a letter guaranteeing payment of said money.

Not real clear...

Looks like the minimum maybe only applies to the categories?

Edit: Should have read the next bullet:

5. Guarantee and pay prize monies as published/advertised to at least 5 places plus a Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion. This amount may not be reduced after sanctioning and advertising.

Most of the contest here in the midwest just pay/trophies for GC & RGC. We (teams) have to yell at them to even read top 10, otherwise they would just read 2nd & 1st.

Well, if you go to the Butt to Butt, Mike Lake does the same thing. Has all the competitors stand up there and in the end you're either first or last. At the Chest to Chest they had the top & up there and in the end you were either 2nd or 1st.

Granted those are separate events from the KCBS contest, but, having particpated in both, I don't care for that format.

And you should be happy. You did well on both days. Congrats!

If you were called to the stage for being in the top 4 overall, at the very least you should have received a trophy and a bottle of booze.

A call is a celebration no matter what. If the MC doesn't get that, then maybe he should be assigned to rubbish disposal or ice delivery.

I nominate Rolf next year for the award ceremony! He's got a great accent! And you can't beat German Precision on timing and execution!

In Mike's defence, I spoke to him before the breakfast and he thought he was giving us a treat by having something other than sausage and eggs. De gustibus...

As far as the awards go, I also feel we coud have done without the cute remarks about the trophies and the format used for the presentations. In the five years I've been going to New Paltz, the organizers have always been very responsive to suggestions. I'm sure they'll be willing to act on any recommendations we offer.

Somewhere in the 'Ribfest' posts I read about the judges/presenters understanding the difficulty of this 'sport'. I spent a lot of time 'pondering'<-- (euphemism for drinking bourbon)the idea of BBQ as a 'sport'.

Similar to the "Is NASCAR a sport?" question -- Is BBQ a SPORT? IMHO I would have to say NO. Yes, it IS competitive and SPORTING, however, not a 'sport'.

One can take a cursory glance around at the 'competition' and notice a dearth of athletes. Yes, perhaps some athletic 'types' or former athletes but...NOT SO MANY athletes.

I say this respectfully, as I am a HUGE <- NO pun intended fan of FATS AND TATS. :icon_shy

No, my proposal is that BBQ be referred to as the SPART OF BBQ. The SPORTING idea of BBQ as an ART.

This term is NOT TO BE CONFUSED with SPLARTING -- THIS combines both Splashing and Farting ( sorry for the POTTY language). SPLARTING is what was heard in MUZZLEBRAKES stall on Sunday morning!

I will submit this term to Websters colloquial dictionary.

"Webster's" definition for "sport": a source of diversion, pastime, a physical activity engaged in for pleasure.

CNN says right here (http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/wayoflife/07/01/barbecue.competition.teams/index.html) that competition barbecue is a sport so it must be true.

From the story: "Of all the great sports of summer, only one leaves competitors covered with sauce, smelling like smoke and clutching trophies with charcoal under their fingernails. Barbecue -- the staple of gatherings with friends and family on hot, lazy days -- has become serious business for amateur cooks who want to prove nobody does it better."
