OK you Central Missouri MoFo's! Who's gonna be at California? I gotta do this one since I grew up there! It'll be like a homecoming for me. Mark and Becky I'm sure will be there.

Jeff I won't be there but Gene will be. He wanted to cook this one with just himself and his sister. Stop by and tell him hey. He is pretty shy and doesn't socialize much. Take it easy on him, this is the first time in 4 years he's cooked solo.

What's the details on this one? How many teams can they handle, space sizes, and entry fee?

I'd like to do it, but I don't think I can take the time from work. Plus it would put me at six in a row. However, I bet it will be a BLAST just based on who will likely be there.

Todd, I'm not sure of all the details other than it's $175 for the four categories and $15 for people's choice (no details known yet on this) and $10 for Kids Q. I have emailed the organizer and am waiting for answers to several questions, including electricity, space size and what surface it's on. One of the organizers is Burl Lutz who Mark works for/with so I'm sure with Mark's input, the contest should be cooker friendly and well-run. I'll post more when I hear something back. What's the details on this one? How many teams can they handle, space sizes, and entry fee?

Randy and I have known Burl, first through Mark, for a few years. Hardest working man in BBQ. It is great when cooks are organizers.

The other organizer was a classmate of mine when I lived in California from Kindergarten through 8th grade. He's the one I emailed because Burl said he doesn't get to see his emails often enough. Still waiting this morning... but I did mail my entry today.

Last year, I could do no wrong with brisket and could do no right with pork....this year, well..........has anyone seen my brisket? LOL I'm turning it in, but the judges don't seem to see it! LOL
I ain't changed a damn thing! So either the judges tastes have changed, I'm hitting the wrong tables, or what I really think is happening.....everyone has gotten better with their brisket!!!

At this point, I'd say we are doubtful.....that is the weekend that fall Hunting classic kicks off at work, and it is a manditory work period.....but let me see if I can twist some nipples, I mean arms, and see what I can do.

Sent off about 5 or 6 questions to one of the organizers on Saturday evening. No response yet. Hmmm...

Jeff_in_KC
07-22-2009, 06:04 PM
Answers to what I asked...

Fan's Favorite (people's choice) can be cooked ahead of time and handed out to the public (kind of seems like WE do that but I'm working to clarify - I prefer blind and THEY hand it out or I can't do it). $15 to enter, winner takes all. He said they may add more prize money to it which makes me think he has very few entered. EDIT: Clarified: We pass the food out from our sites. Hmmm... might be tough for us to do.

Kids Q - Turn-in is 7:30 pm on Friday evening. Cook any ground meat. Cash payouts to winners and medals to all entrants. Use own grill (must be wood/charcoal). Six individual pieces turned in.

Contest is on grass - not much shade! Sites are approximately 20x30.

20 amp electric available about every 100 feet so bring plenty of power cord.

Water will be delivered to the sites and 4-H kids will bring around ice for sale. Liquor store will deliver if needed (uh oh! )

They are thinking they'll have 25 to 30 teams. First year sanctioned contest only needs 15 teams to be a qualifier. I did not ask him if he got governor's proclamation.

She's listed as one of those involved ("sidekick" according to their info flyer). Burl Lutz and Ken Wolken are the main guys the way I understand it. Do you guys have the entry form yet?

Hey folks... anyone going to California next weekend interested in going in on a case of parsley? I can get a case (about 60 bunches) at Restaurant Depot for about $16 plus tax. We bought a case for Great Bend, KS a few weeks ago and it was really good stuff. If a couple of you are interested, I'll make a run down there this week and bring along on Friday morning. Lemme know ASAP so I can fit the trip to RD in during my lunch hours this week!

Yikes! WTF??? Let's see who I know for sure:

Big Creek BBQ
Team Q
R Butts R Smokin
Great Grills o' Fire
Uncle Bub
Contracted Cookers
Ray Jay's BBQ

Others I've heard possible:

River City Smokehouse
Trail Boss
Natural Born Grillers
Smoke This

Uhhh... I don't know as I've heard of any others. Come on folks! We need at least seven or eight more teams! Gotta be someone out there who's coming to cook this!

Bubba, can you get ahold of the Eldon team list and see if they'll share it with Burl? This is crazy! On the other hand, I guess if you don't make the top ten in every category, you've had a really chitty weekend!

Hey Becky, is Anna doing the Kids Q? Taylor is signed up but I told her this morning there may not be one if there aren't enough kids signing up. Taylor is coming down all day Friday with me so if Anna is coming along Friday morning with Mark, they can play together like they did at Sedalia.

Yeah Anna is signed up for the kids q and I think Mark's son Erik is also. Anna will be coming down with Mark in the morning so they should have a good time keeping entertained. It is in a big spot so I think I am going to have Anna bring her bike.

Yep Jay, at the fairgrounds. If you come into California on 50 Hwy, Go north on 87 Hwy which is also Oak Street. Turn Right on E. South Street and go till the road ends at the fairgrounds.

If you come in from the north on 87 Hwy, you'll turn right on Main then left on Oak then another left on E. South Street and go to the end.

Dont think the fair opens until closer to the evening and they sell an armband that we bought last year and just let them go. They had a good time. It doesnt cost anything to get into the fair. At least it didn't last year. On Friday night they have like a tuff truck and figure 8 which is a blast to watch.

Okay thanks that sounds fair enough. The six bite sized pieces or burgers
thing came from an e-mail I got from Kenny.

By the way, today I picked up six large bags of parsley at Restaurant Depot which more or less equals a full case. They told me there are 10 bunches per bag however it seems like more to me. I haven't had a bag open yet to see what kind of condition it is but it doesn't look too bad. When we went to Great Bend, we got Restaurant Depot parsley and it turned out really nice. I will bring all of these to California Friday morning and anyone else who is interested, I have four bags left that I will sell for $5 each. Out of the six, Bubba has one and we have one. Let me know...

Fun little first year contest! Hotter than hell out there but Kenny and Burl did a great job and were very interested in making it a fun time for cooks and solicited feedback quite a bit! Congrats to Mark and Becky and Bubba and Robin for a great showing! And so I meet Sledneck in person in May then nail down the Sledneck Memorial 13th Place Chicken award! Seriously, there must have been some excellent chicken cooks there because at 13th, I still scored 163.9998 in chicken! That would be top five in a lot of contests!
