Was just contacted by a contest we are considering in June. Friday night there are having a People's Choice, don't know if it is optional or not, sometimes they aren't.

The thing is it's open category, do anythign you want, and they aren't providing you anything for it.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this? So I'm supposed to just get there extra early Friday so I can cook up a bunch of stuff to feed the public on my dime with the hopes I might win a prize? I've never heard of a People's Choice where the product wasn't provided. And open category? Deserts versus meat versus drinks? How's that valid comparison. Can I just give away free cans of beer and assume that'll probably win!!!

Anyone have feedback on this? I'm concerned the contest organizer's missing the boat on this. And if a lot of teams won't participate on their dime, well, the public is gonna be pretty ticked when they pay money and there's no food.

Probably best to contact the organizer for more info - these PC's can vary from event to event.

Just trying to get a feel from everyone on thoughts. Definitely planning on contacting the organizers.

We've done a few contests with open style Friday night PC. It can be fun because you usually get to sample other teams' entries. It seems like most entries are appetizers. Just pick something cheap, easy to prep and cook, and keeps them coming back for more.

If you want cheap, easy, and popular, make Smoked Fatties. I was part of a team last year that did that at a contest. At the same contest this year, people were looking for them again but we weren't allowed to sell them.

How many are you required to give away?

The Holtville Rib Fest is a bit like that
LOL but you have to buy the Ribs from them
All the money goes to Youth Sports
Its a great civic event

I really missed the creativity we had last year
That's definitely coming back in 2010
