Rick and thirdeye are among our longest "regulars", they have been entering basically every week since this thing began, so it's only natural they have the most wins considering the quality of food/pics they consistently produce. After about week 15 or so (Im guessing which week) the number of participants went way up and we started to see a lot of new winners becuase of the increased playing field. These last few weeks, the number has been going back down as a lot of our members are now focusing their attention on their BBQ comps and other such things (or so I figure). So it's back down to our regulars at this point to a degree. I would recommend keeping at it each week because Rick and thrideye don't win every week. Some people have expressed surprise when they won, so happy that they had beaten some of the stiff competition.

I would like to see RCS participate once again. That dude can post some MEAN pics! Then again...maybe that could be bad if he keeps winning every week like he did early on...

Thanks everyone for the votes......My pick for the May 11 - May 17 Throwdown is

Cornmeal - Anything using a cornmeal (or corn flour) batter or dough such as: cornbread, muffins, hoecakes, Johnny Cakes, biscuits, dumplings, cookies, polenta, grits, hushpuppies etc., and cooked on your pit.

Hot damn.........cornmeal. Now that shoudl be something interesting. Can it be featured as the batter for something fried? Taking inot consideration that what ever I fry up will have been smoked or grilled as well? Nice, Man, some buttery grits and sunny side eggs would hit the spot. THat pic on the box made me hungry.

Great choice Wayne, out of the box thinking on that one. Great job.

You mean something like a corndog or fried catfish?.....well, that would have a batter. Trying to deep fry on the pit is kind of dangerous, although I've done it in a campfire for years.

Without divulging too much........ I'm thinking about a battered piece of meat that was smo/fried. I should be okay with this approach, don't ya think?

I bet you can figure out how to pull it off. In looking back, some of the Throwdown entries like the beef Wellington and all of the bread and pizza entries were technically baked in a cooker. One of my fish entries were panko fillets that were grill fried on a sheet of foil with a little oil, and my hot dog entry was cooked on a cast iron griddle in my Egg. I would think even this fried egg in the Egg would be a legal entry too.

Dang Wayne,,,,,,,,,,,,,,You even make that fried egg look fastastic!! I have my game plan all worked out. It will be a spin off of chocolate covered stawberries.............Brethren Style. But there ain't gonna be any strawberries or chocolate involved.

are you saying you would grill or smoke a meat in your cooker, then batter and fry it on the stove in the house?

i think the cornmeal should be in the cooker, but it ain't my show

I have to agree now that you put it that way. Since the theme is cornmeal, then the cornmeal should definitely be on the grill or smoker.

Oh no, not in the house. Too much clean up involved. I'd probably use my DO over live coals. More authentic that way. Good point though, since the throwdown ingredient is corn meal , then maybe it needs to be grilled or smoked some how. For what I want to do, I would need to indirect the meat first so it cooks through, then do a quick hot fry just to brown the batter.
Let me know what you all think. I'm open to changing my plan if need be.

I'll allow it for the item highlighted above. That is in the correct spirit of the BBQ Throwdowns in my opinion, seeing as it is cooked over live coals.

Geez. Have to change my mind a lot for this stuff.

P.S. You should include a shot of it cooking over the coals.

I would have to agree that whatever type of cooking is done to the cornmeal, in whatever form it may be in, should be done on the cooker. Cornmeal is so versatile and is used in almost every culture, the possibilities are endless.

So, back to my example of a corn-dog.....the dog itself could be grilled or smoked first (but it wouldn't have to be), then battered and then fried in a dutch oven on the cooker. Or some cornbread-like batter could be poured into a muffin tin, a few slices of dog added and then baked on the cooker. Or you could make a cornmeal dough, roll it out, wrap it around a dog (like you do with crescent roll dough) and bake it on the cooker. So right there you have 3 ways to come up with something off your pit that will taste and look sort of like a corn-dog.
