I know it's a little early to discuss the Royal but we have been thinking we might hit it this year.
Any advice as to when a team that has never cooked there should enter?
Thanks everybody.

We're planning on going this year for the first time as well. So you think if we wait til' the deadline to enter it will be too late?

If so, how do you decide some of the stuff they ask you on the application? Bales of straw, Porta john etc.? I've heard people talk about it on here before, but it might help to get the conversation going again.

Hmmm...Since I am cookin' on WSM's maybe I'll chain them to myself, or do you mean to keep people from opening them and stealing the meat?

Maybe a guard dog then... As idiots have been known to steal raw meat right off a smoker...

You can do an add on order later - if you know you are going to do it, don't wait til the deadline. I believe the last handful of years, they've had waiting lists and had to turn teams away. They only have room for so many teams and that number shifts a bit based on the size of spaces past competitors sign up for. Past competitors have first priority over new competitors if they sign up by X date.

Hey don't sign up too quick. Maybe we can split a port-a-let if we're set up next to each other.
I'll talk with Shotgun and see when we will be putting in for it.

Has anyone noticed the big price increase on the spots at the Royal? We always get a "B" sized spot (20 x 50) last year it was $350. This year its $450. Thinking about just doing the invitational and skipping the open. I can understand a $20 -$30 increase, but a $100 come on. Think if they do this a couple years in a row.:eek: how long until it hits $1000 to enter? Just venting.

It's all about the money Chris. That is what the upper wonks have told me. It doesn't matter about the cooks, they will just go out and find more... That is the main reason they will never get any money from me... Although, I have given the Invitational some thought. But I would want to be able to pull my RV out and park it somewhere and come back for the Saturday night party!!! And not cook the Open...

You know a security guy....that works cheap. Parking is an easy problem to solve. Next question?

Jorge, do you really know a place to park an RV for AR weekend? I was going to look into the casino's down there. but if it's too much trouble, I'll go back to Gallatin or Kentucky....

As I really hate not seeing friends at this contest, because of the attitude of the upper wonks.

The place is DEAD on Sat night. About 1/10 of the people from Friday night are there. Should be able to put it in a lot somewhere around there and then you could sleep in it that night. I don't know where they put the "Invitational Only" people but I bet it is nowhere near your old location.

As of now I'm going to sign to sign up for the invitational but not the open. Still not sure I can even swing the invitational but would rather have the option closer to the date. I guess I'll get a letter or something as with the GAB?

NO! Each team must cook in their own spot.

Yes you should as long as the organizer from the comp you won submitted all the pertinent information.Last year was our first season competing and we were lucky enuff to get a win.Getting down to 2 weeks before the deadline hadnt heard anything, called KCBS all they said was why are you calling us?I had explained I was new at the game they were pretty rude.(This was shortly after stephs retirement).I called the jack and the royal and they were looking into it.I posted on the forums and Scotty and Rod explained to me the process and It was apparent if you knew how the game is played that the organizer of the contest we won hadnt submitted the state championship declaration to KCBS(You think they would have explained that to me).If you dont have the invites when every one is talking about getting thiers start calling. We ended up getting the invites to the Royal and the Jack.We went out and did the invitational and wouldnt trade the experience for most anything.

Being to new to all of this what is the difference between the invitational and the open beyond the invite? Some of these posts make the open sound like "We be Thuggi'n", "Girls gone Que" "Animal House BBQ" is the vibe there. Is there a lack of control becuase of the size of the event?

Coz

The Invitational is on Friday /Saturday and at the same time there is a thing called Party of the Year for the local teams. Its a crazy thing.Last year the invitational had around 104 teams competing. This is for teams that have won a State championship event and had at least 15 teams if a 1st year contest or 25 otherwise. The party of the year thing brings in HUGE amounts of people and most have had a cocktail or two or 20.Where we were last year we watched the buses unload people for hours .We are talking a lot of people.many parties with DJs etc.We had to leave after the awards but I am told that Saturday nite is much more uneventful.the Open is Saturday/Sunday with a mere 450+ teams. If we ever win an Invitation again we are going to do the whole weekend even it means hiring Jorge.

We are doing the open this year. This will be our first, Did not realize there was a waiting list. Did not want to sent the money in yet, how long do you think we can hold out before it is to late?

Jorge, do you really know a place to park an RV for AR weekend?

Use your Liberty Lot pass (team parking lot). It's about 200-300 yards away from the Invitational Lot.

Just a heads up, if you are coming from a distance and need a Hotel, book them early. I recently tried to book rooms in hotels we have used for the last 3 yrs. The rooms were either unavailable, or had doubled or tripled in price. Just food for thought.

When I did the invitational only they put me on the drive of the entrance. It was kind out of the way - luckily Plowboy walked them in for me.

After I was done I just pulled out and left. I was supposed to be out before the awards. However, I talked to the security guy and he said, I only needed to move if an open team came to take the spot. Nobody came.

On another note - if enough people do the invitational, then group up for the open. So lets say 4 teams do the invitational, then make a 1 team group for the open, let it be a big party.

just an idea.

Solidkick

What Bill said above is what I was told last year on the phone about the invitational.
I asked about a larger spot than what is given to you and was told I'd have to pay, so might as well stay and cook the open.
Where we were located for both events was smack dab in between 4 corp. parties, with live bands. I heard 4 different versions of "Sweet Home Alabama" Friday night. I did not venture too far away from our site, people coming through asking for questions and drinks. I was focused for the invitational and really did not enjoy Friday night.
Saturday night was really laid back compared to Friday night, no parties on our street, so I ventured over a few streets. I remember seeing Steph from the Slabs setting under a tent watching a band that had a MONSTER guitar player....the dude was awesome! The whole band was good, but this cat could really play....and I watched a little Mizzou football up at Team Q's site. Saturday night was more pleasurable, but I was pretty tired from stressing over Friday night and the turn ins for invitational.

If I go this year, it will be to visit and party....I've cooked it and that was a goal.
I'd rather spend time with Plowboy, Andy, Phil, Reverend Randy, and all the other brothers and sisters this next time around. Maybe Scottie will be there! I'd like to meet him!
