Anyone know about/signed up for Smoke In Da Valley being held in Green Lane, PA 5/15-16? http://www.glfcbbq.com/. It's a first year contest so just wondering what the setup might be, the area, etc. before signing up.

Hmmm. Didn't notice it isn't a state qualifier. It still looks like my only viable option between now and mid-July, though. If I can find someone to help out, I'm in.

Clint, I am signed up but dont have much info. Below is an email I got from the organizer on 3/26:

Yes I did recieve your application. There are currently 13 teams signed up including you. I am expecting at least 4 more to come in at this time. The website is www.glfcbbq.com (http://www.glfcbbq.com/). It is our first, of hopefully many, contests. We have a DJ playing music all day on the 15th and 16th. Possible an open mic night on friday night. Little Red Rooster Blues Band is playing Saturday evening. There will be a beer Garden Fri & Sat. I am working on getting a state championship certification. Hopefully that comes through before the contest. I will be sending out the cooks and Judges packets very shortly. Any other questions please feel free to ask.

The guy seems helpful and usually responds to inquiries in a day or two. Other posts I have seen say the contest area is very nice, but I do not have any personal knowledge on the area. There is a post regarding the contest on the MABBQA forum. Hope this helps and it would be great to see you there.

Nice! It's going to be a bit of a crazy contest since I have to leave for a wedding in California 2 days later and am most likely doing it solo. If anyone knows any good turn-in box experts willing to lend a hand, I'm paying in beer and cigars!

OK, this is an important contest for me and I'll tell you why...

I'm a fellow that grew up in North Jersey and had the good fortune to spend the decade of his 20s traveling the US of A. After spending 2 years in Youngstown, OH I decided to move to the part of the country that I most loved ~ Vermont. I had a Putney mailing address and knew Curtis well.

Then I met my soul-mate. Unfortunately she lived in Skippack, PA and after a year of long distance relationship I lost and moved down to PA. We rented a house in Harleysville.

It was there, in Harleysville, that I discovered my talent for barbecue. I was in the Harleysville Wal-mart one day and was intrigued by the $28 ECBs, so I bought one. And that started it all for me.

See, all of you that take the Northeast Extension and get off at the Lansdale exit will take Rt. 63 West and will drive within three blocks of where we lived in Harleysville and right past the Wal-mart where my obsession started.

I'll be the fat guy with the big Klose, a red tent and too much beer. Stop by and say hi. We like to smoke a load of chicken wings late on Friday night and everyone is welcome.

Email reply from Shawn,

Hi Ed,
We have 24 teams confirmed and three more who said they are sending in this week. I haven't heard back about our State Championship status, so I am going to say we won't be a State Championship site this year. I will definatley put forth some more effort towards that for next year. Our Reps suggested that we cut off at 28 teams since this is our first year and we are still learning the ropes.
Thanks

I didn't know that it was that difficult to get a proclamation as long as you meet the team requirements which they do. Anyone familiar with the process in PA and/or how Shawn could push it along. Still a few weeks to get it done.

For Harrisburg Pa, we had to get the problamation signed by the Govoner. You pretty much have to know somebody to get it done.

This is the reply I received from the Governor's office today.

For 2009, the Governor already declared the 2nd Annual Keystone Classic Barbeque, and event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, in September as the Pennsylvania State Championship. The request was submitted to Department of Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff by the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, which is the Keystone Classic Barbeque organizer. The Department of Agriculture recommend that we honor their request to declare this event the State Championship.

New Holland, PA Summerfest is a state championship too so that doesn't make any sense.

There must be some sort of KCBS document that explains the state proclamation process and the fact that multiple contests can be recognized as long as they comply with certain things, no?

I would imagine that would have to be so as some states have more than one State Champioship. I would imagine that it takes a while to get it to the Gov. desk. Probably not much of a chance for this year

Really? Does that include bags of wood chunks? I would assume not but don't want to risk a fine. They were actually mailed to me from PA so I'm just bringing em home for a visit.

Clint, Its my understanding that there will be 'wood checkpoints' set up by the PA State Police on all major arteries from the NY/NJ area into PA. So if I were you, I'd leave your wood chunks at home. Being the nice guy that I am, I have a few bags of Matchlight briquettes that I will give you if you need something to cook with. Just let me know and I will bring them along.:lol::lol::lol:

Firewood which has been treated for insects is not affected by the emergency rules. Bring your wood by my site, we'll give it a quick dunk in Bifenthrin or Dursban just to make the state happy.

Not sure if anyone posted anything about food markets but you will pass 3 on the way after you get off 476 at Lansdale. When you make the right you will drive about 5 miles and you will get to Clemens Rd, make the left in the shopping center and Hennings Market will be to the right of the center.

If you keep going straight on 63, the road you get on from 476 and go past Hennings you will pass over Rt113. Your next light there is a Walmart sign, turn into there and Giant Food Market will be to the right in the shopping center.

Again if you stay on 63 and go passed Giant appox 1-1 1/2 miles you will get to Shelly Rd, turn left on Shelly Rd and immediately there will be a Landis Food Market on your left.

I just wanted you all to know incase you forgot anything or want to pick up lettus. Can't wait to see you all there.
