Hey Will,

What sort of trophy's or plaques do you have for the event?

Eric

Not competing, but since it is only half a dozen blocks from home I'll definitely stop by.

If anyone that is going to be there needs, wants, or would like some styrofoam reusable/disposable coolers, just let me know and I'll bring some by. We get one every two weeks and I won't let my wife toss them.

14 teams so far

And they are:?

There were 8 Teams at the first Willie Palooza...This is turning into a major competition!

The Purple Primal Smoker Turtles will be there....

The P.P.S.T. Willie Palooza 2007 Original Chili is defrosted and has been cooking for the last week....Should be ready for turn in just before midnight 4/18 (after that it will be on the decline, losing a point an hour in taste and texture-kinda like the ball going down at New Years). The secret is low and slow after aging in the freezer for close to 2 years... Timing is everything...

Willie...are you doing the Clams again? They coulda won Chef's Choice!

Yours in BBQ,

Cliff

P.S. Too bad Poobah is going to be in Dover....

I have never been to a BBQ competition. I wanted to come as a spectator as I live not too far from Long Island compared to all the other competitions. I had a few questions...

1) I saw the rules said no alcohol for teams, what about spectators?

2) What would be the best time to go to this event?

3) Is BBQ food available for spectators?

4) Would love to chat with some team members and see their operation, is that possible?

Thanks

Me too !!!

Willie asked me to judge twice since I could not be there on Saturday. I wasn't directed to a judges application. Seems like the KCBS judges class this weekend has filled the need.

No problem though... I plan to still arrive very early on Sun. and will hang and help a team if needed.

Got my camper all cleaned up today, packing for it all week, getting my K&N Charger kit thrown in Tues, getting the RV inspected and propane topped Weds.. Thurs finishing the ABT rack, Disc Wok, 2x Branding irons, and possibly another offset? Friday we start the haul with a few stops on the way up. Anyone know what time the festivities end ?

I'm excited! I hope I can park the truck with the RV. My Optima Battery isn't holding a charge and I'm not sure if my furnace will run on 12v? The water heater will give me my warm shower though on 12v.

Actually, none of those judges came from the class on Saturday. The only addition since then was the only person on the alternates list.

Here is the situation: Will asked me to assist with the event. I expressed my concern about being involved in the 'day of' running of the event and instead volunteered to handle judge recruitment. He said he understood and accepted the offer.

Since that time he has not told me that he asked anyone to judge, hence I have not added anyone he personally asked to the list.

As there is clearly some confusion here, I'm going to step back and let Will handle things.

Hope that clarifies things.

In an effort to provide the best support possible to the teams at WilliePallooza, we are working with Main St. Meats in Farmingdale to have a special ‘burger’ category.

This category will not impact the ratings for Grand or Reserve champion and all meat for this category will be donated by Main St. Meats. The meat will be their new proprietary burger blend, utilizing Kobe Brisket, Angus Rib Cap and Boneless Short Ribs with an Angus Chuck base.

This will be an open garnish category and teams must provide five (5) separate and identifiable portions.

Things are looking good for this but are still tentative. I will post more information as soon as things are finalized with the donor.

Willie - I have a favor big to ask..

If this goes through and if you speak with Main Street Meats could you possibly ask them if they will make this blend available for special request orders at the retail level or if it will just be wholesale. if so, what would the min lb. ?

this is the exact same blend being sold to NYC restaurants by La Frieda Meats in the meatpacking dist and I have been thinking of trying to blend something similar on my own.

Thank you all for the congratulations and thanks to sledneck for harassing me to compete :-D. It's not that I didn't want to come, it was just that my teammate was going to be away and I didn't want to do it alone but it was well worth doing. My wife and I had a great time and met lots of great people. I didn't think my food had turned out that good and was disappointed after turn ins but I guess it just goes to show that it's all about what the judges like. The biggest shock besides getting the big weiner trophy was the invitation to the american royal. Now all I need is a trailer to haul all of my bbq crap. Will a big thanks to you! I hadn't even considered coming until you invited me and we had a great time! I realized after everything, I took like 5 pictures!! ARG!

Anyway, chili judging was fantastic, table captaining the rest was a sweet deal and Swamp pit definately earned the burger win with that presentation! Big thanks to Joe and his crew from LI and all his grub.. All the brethren who talked to us and sipped a beer with us! We just had a great time and have a fun story about the trip up to boot! For anyone who already heard it, we made much better time going home and avoided towing on the parkway as well as Brooklyn!

Great time.. going to take a nap.. need to recover!

I agree with you Clint. I also understand Willie's position with the uncertainty of everything and not knowing until a few days before, but we all know that if he had told people about the proclomation he would have easily had 25 teams. I am also pretty sure you 25 teams to make it a qualifier for a 2nd year contest, but i am sure a rep will chime in soon. It just seems a little sneaky to me.

You sir, obviously have no idea what sneaky is.

Would it have been "sneaky" if Willie announced at the awards that he had a last minute sponsor that put up $5K specifically for the GC?

Would it have been "sneaky" if Willie announced at the awards that he had a last minute sponsor that put up a big name trailer smoker specifically for the GC?

Willie went out of his way, above and beyond anything that he had promised to anybody, to obtain, at the last minute, something extra for the GC, and he revealed it at a time of his chosing, at the awards. If that is "sneaky" then I will take "sneaky" all day long, and I am proud to have a "sneak" as a friend and a Brethren.

This is sounding like it can get to be like Grill Kings again and let's not go there. Willie did not exclude anyone from competing. Everyone was more than welcome to come compete. If anyone thinks it is sneaky or communication wasn't done properly then plan an event and run it the way you feel. Whether this is a qualifier or not affects me in no way, I'm already qualified for the Royal and the Jack. I'd just hate to see the winning team get they're hopes up just to have them dashed later. I know a team it happened to last year. If you guys have had contact with the Royal and Jack and they confirmed your qualifier status... Great !...If not uh oh.

Oh and not mentioning the possibility of this being a State Championship seems pretty SNEAKY to me. Don't worry, that's not why we hate you.

Seriously, the idea that this was 'sneaky' or underhanded is pretty despicable and for anyone to insinuate that there was some sort of an attempt to 'rig' something is insulting to the extreme.

Hey, here's a suggestion: if you don't know, shoot the organizer a pm or give him a phone call. Then there's no need to speculate. Wow, innovative, right? Actually finding out firsthand instead of making an accusation that you attempt to qualify as something else might be nice.

If the only reason that you (meant in general, not 'you' specifically) would attend is if it is a State Championship and not to support someones effort to run a great event, then the event was probably better for the lack of your presence.

BTW, I expect equally vociferous complaints in the future for any event where the organizer surprises the winner with anything 'bonus' or 'extra'.

Hey, the event probably was better because of my lack of presence but I tried to support in other ways. I asked on several occasions if I could judge (never got a response) and came out to both Williepalloozas.

I love the idea that Willie put together another great local contest, loved the venue, and would have loved to have done it if I had $500+ burning a hole in my pocket and far fewer commitments. It was billed as a "come shake the rust off" contest so I chose KCBS sanctioned qualifiers.

I have, however, supported Grillin On the Bay and was one of the only locals to support Oyster Bay before it had to be canceled.

For the record that is a very unfair statement. For teams that cook a lot of contests (or not that many like us) whether or not a state championship can help make a decision whether or not to go to a contest. If I know that a contest has a high entry fee and a small prize pool, knowing that winning the contest could get into the Jack draw, I may decide to go.

I am hardly rich and have to make contest decisions very carefully, so to say you would not want me there because I consider whether or not a contest is a state championship bothers me for sure.

I did inquire about the event and was told that it would be non-sanctioned, informal, get the rust off type of deal... the same way that the BBQ Bailout was represented. There were good people, good times and contests deserving support in both MD and NY this past weekend. If I can't decide on a contest usually the events qualifier status will tip the scales.

Eric, just let me know which contests you are running and I'll be sure not to spoil it with my presence.

As a contestant, I'll chime in with my opinion on this:

If any contest was billed as a State Championship and was short for teams (15 or 25, whatever), and therefore was not a qualifier after it finished, I would have felt like it was a scam and we would have been very upset.

Not that we have been near GC, yet...but you never know. We don't usually cook non-sanctioned or non-SC events (they are usually grilling or we don't know anyone attending or it's too far) but this was in our backyard and it was WilliePallooza so we had to!

I think it was better to have hedged the bet than to have disappointed the GC and all the participants. /pitchforks and torches mod

Imagine the CHITSTORM if the team # came up short in the end and the GC was told "Sorry, not a qualifier"!!! "OK, here's a nice piece of paper you can hang in your rec room..."

If we won a GC somewhere and were surprised with the SC at the awards, I would faint right on stage (and that would be a sight!!!)

Oh, and we cooked like it was the Royal. We always give it our best shot and never compromise.

Oh - let's try to keep it civil, everyone!

Wow, from this group I did not expect this. What is going on here??? What's the big deal. People are trying to get a comp going, have a right to run it the way the want and everyone is pizzing and moaning about it? Is this BBQ or what? Everyone had a chance to sign up. The decision to announce it as a qualifier is up the organizer. He did it the way he wanted. Get over it. Stop pizzing on the parade! This is not the norm for this group...thanks Willie, Eric, Sled, and the rest of the competitiors. Scott

If it's a qualifier next year, and Willie feels inclined to organize it. Are you going to do it instead of Salsbury?? The first year is always the toughest. And I don't think a guy that has a restaurant, that wants his friends to come out and play BBQ games in the parking lot for a big plastic trophy compares to the event that occurred this weekend. This was definitely the first year for his BBQ competition. S

I won Grill Kings and didn't give a crap that there was 18 pages of complaints post-contest... and either should Deez20... or Willy.

I still think there is a valid opinion that should be OK to post here:

All information about a contest should be known to all competitors in advance.

Wrong, your the competitor, not the organizer, and there are things that belong to the organizer. Choose to compete or not. I do agree with you about the winners ignoring the chitstorm. This conversation takes nothing away from their great job!!! Scott
