View Full Version : The Lurker Extraordinaire

I have honestly been viewing and posting to this site for almost a year now and it just came to my attention that I am supposed to put up some information about myself here.

Anyway, my name is Ryan Newstrom and I am a 29 year old guy from Ames, Iowa. Originally from Des Moines, I am a proud Iowan and don't plan on ever leavin'. I am happily married to the greatest woman on earth for over 5 and a half years, no kids yet, but eventually.

I work for the County I live in--Story as a Planner. It is something I enjoy, but my true love is cooking. I have been cooking for as long as I can remember and got in to barbeque since my twenties and had access to my own grill. I learned most of what I know from my father, Terry, who is the best cook I knew growing up (although now I am starting to catch up with him ).

It is with him that last summer we decided to start a competition barbeque team--Big T'z Q Cru. My dad is 6'5'' and 275lbs, so everyone calls him Big T, hence the name. He lives in the Twin Cities and lost his job last winter due to the crappy economy, so I thought it would be a good idea to do this as a way to keep him busy and for us to spend more time together.

After spending most of the Spring and Summer last year getting prepared and planning for our first competition, we competed in the Nevada Kiwanis Club BBQ Comp. Through that we learned a ton and met some great people. We also used it as an excuse to get our family and friends to come see us and sample some free food.:-D We didn't place well overall, but ended up taking 6th place in Brisket out of 28 teams, which was awesome! We even took a picture of our $25 check to catalogue our victory.

After that first competition, we are looking forward to getting more involved this season. I am working on a website to keep all those interested informed about our team and schedule. If any of you are interested in visiting here is the url:

It is still very rough, but you can see some information about the team as well as pictures of my dad, me and the rest of our cru. By the way, we spell crew that way because I am also a big wine geek and it is a holla back to the "Cru" wines from France.

When I am not cooking q and working I sing in my local community choir (I was a vocal music major at Luther College) and brew my own cider and beer. I am starting a batch of IPA this weekend.:-D I also enjoy working with wood, golfing and bow hunting.

Anyway, looking forward to spending more time on here getting to know the rest of the Brethren and meeting many of you on the circuit in the future! Take care!
