Well I figured that should get some attention.

Hello everyone, I'm Jody. I do the casual, backyard, every few weeks or months, smokin some ribs or jerky for the game kind of stuff.

I recently purchased a CampChef Smoke Vault vertical gas smoker to replace my old, worn out, horizontal smoker. It was one of the barrel types with the smoker box on the side. I don't remember the brand but it's the kind that you get at Lowe's or Home Depot. Any way, I was reluctant to buy a gas smoker but was convinced by a friend that I'd love it! Well, I hate it! Give me back my fire!! I just can't get into it and maybe it's me but I'm just not getting the same results.

So in my search to find a new smoker and get a little more serious about this stuff, I found this forum and hope to get some advice on a new smoker and learn a few things, as I really do enjoy it. Any links to the best smokers in the $500.00 range and to threads on using gas smokers (if there are any) would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the asylum, Jody!

There are a few guys hwere with gas smoker. I'm sure that they will chime in.

As far as the best smoker under $500, you'll get a bunch of opinions. If I were buying one now I would look seriously at the new 22" Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM). If it lives up to the reputation of the current WSM it will be a great cooker.

Welcome. I agree with Ron that you ought to consider the brand new for 2009 Weber Smokey Mountain in the bigger 22" size.

There's a lengthy thread about it here: http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47565&highlight=22+wsm

Welcome to the madness, Jody.

Concur with the 22" WSM within the budget. Can't beat its features.

On the other side of the financial range... have a Ugly Drum Smoker built under $100.
That's the beauty of BBQ without shelling out the dollars!

Welcome!

I've got a little different take for you. I'd go WSM but I would stay away from the new 22inch. I'm now sure I would wish a brand new model smoker on a newbie user. I might suggest you go with the 18 incher and down the road when/if you find you just have to have another smoker you'll have something to move up to.

After reading some of the potential issues with the new WSM I'm not sure it's the best way to go. (And I stress potential issues, I'm looking forward to mine.)

Welkum. I agree with the WSM. We like pictures of the food you're cooking. Remember; no pics, it did not happen!

Thank's guys! Glad to be here. I am a bit surprised on the amount of recommendations for the WSM. I just figured a vertical offset like the Bandera would have been the popular vote? I guess I do have a lot to learn. Perception does not always equal reality.

There are many Bandera lovers still here Jody. I use a Brinkmann Smoke King Deluxe. Basically it's a left handed Bandera. Still my stick burner of choice. Lot's of choices out there.
