Guys,

Chris Lilly had invited me to a Kingsford new product launch that he is hosting in Manhattan on 11/18 in Manhattan from 4-6PM. It was originally scheduled to be held at Blue Smoke but now venue has changed due to permit issues. Unfortunately due to work schedule and 4PM start time I had to decline the invite.

At the AR last month, some of us got a sneak peek of the new product with Chris and team so I knew what it was anyway. I think many might be pleased.

I advised that although I couldn't make it, there may be a few of you guys who may be interested that work in the city and could make the start time. The marketing arm for the promo event got back to me and agreed to extend the invite to allow approximately five others from here if interested based on space limitations.

If you're interested, please e-mail Diane Mangiantini at dmangiantini @ currentlm dot com or call her at p. 415-449-0122.

Whoa... I like Chris Lily. That's a real honor. Remember him on the Today show cooking chicken against the Neelys and holding up the chicken and saying "anbd if you do it right it turns out like this" and he squeezes it in his hands and the chicken 1/1 falls apart all over the table.

I wish I could meet this guy again.

Kingsford sent me 3 cases of their new product to run cooking trials on in the off season. From what we have done so far, I like the fact that there is less waste product at the end of the cook. I will share all information with the Brethren as I get it.

Where do you write to get this new stuff.

My video that tested the Stoker for durability on a stick burner used 43 lbs all at once. It has over 7900 hits. That's more than any Stoker/Stumps stoker or even Kingsford Presence. So I figure they send me some free new stuff... I will make a little video for them.

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily it's only two blocks from my office so I can escape for a bit without too much hype.

So what's the product launch? Are they bringing back a version of the old formula or another reformulation? I've tried to Google it to find out what's up but haven't been able to find anything about it. Any insight or is it still completely hush-hush?

Nice seeing Mr. Lilly, Pigmaker, Nancee, Big Lou and the rest of the gang yesterday. Nice cocktails, ribs, pp sliders, some sushi grade tuna and more in some freezing NYC weather. Checking to see what I can and can't say about the new product since the press materials are embargoed until 1/1 but as soon as I know, I share.

Just got Back from the Kingsford launch party in New York. Good to See all the BBQ Titans in attendance, Great Food from Chris Lilly, Great Original Drinks from Darryl Robinson, New Yorks Ultimate Cocktail Mixologist and a really cold tent on the roof of a building in Manhattan in November.

Heres the details on the product.. It will begin distribution on January 15th 2009 and will be available at Home Depot across the country. It will be available in two sizes, 12 pound bag @ list priceof $ 9.49 Twin 16.5 pound bags @ list price of $16.99. The product will also be available at supermarkets and hardware stores that already carry Kingsford.

I have only grilled with the product so far and have been happy with the results. With the cover off of the weber tempertures of 700-800 degrees are possible to acheive. I plan on using some this week in the backwwods to smoke some turkeys. The product is in briquet form, being made from lump hardwood and then compressed in a briquet with an organic flavorless binder. it has a nice hardwood aroma as it burns. Thanks to Kingsford for hosting a great event.

I'm over my picture quota. FYI, the new stuff tastes nearly identical to the old briquettes.

Did you sauce them?

It does sound interesting. It is a little more than Royal Oak. I heard that quality had gone down hill and were using preservatives

Wrapped em in bacon with some Dizzy Pig Tsunami rub. No sauce.

Is this just a spin to get the backyard guy to buy, and spend more for, the same chit they've been using for years??

Smokey Al Gold

Sounds like something I've been wanting to try. If it's too expensive I could always just use lump. Same chit but not compressed into a briquette.

I use a briquette of the same type, and its around a dollar a pound!
Even at that price, I love it. Burns real slow and smooth in a "sealed cooker", burns hot and fast in a grilling application, and I SWEAR there is less ash than regular lump.
If their briquette is as good as what I am using now, it is worth a look for those that have not used it.

Very interesting stuff. Not that I can get my paws on it over here .. but, what would compel one to buy it over lump?

The only thing I can think of would be that it has a consistent size and consistent density. But, doesn't that take some of the fun out of the whole process?

Sorry, didn't see that.

Home Depot? This should be interesting. New products don't make it out here very fast. HD is still selling porticos with undersized columns out here.

Yeah, I threw away the letter but I think it said it would be available mid-Jan and on most mass retail shelves but late March in time for the "bbq season"

I have my copy here. It says that it is shipping in January (no specific date) and will be widely available by April 1.
