dont see anything wrong. the color is very nice.. the way to chicken is layed into the box is nice. it is very symetrical and they are pretty much exact replicas of each other..

the box is clean.. i think a 9 would be a proper score.

But since I'm a new judge I'd just probably give it a 3.

8. It could be the picture but something about the top 2 pieces gives me the impressing that they aren't cooked all the way. No visible carmelization, I guess.

I would go 8 on that box it looks good. The only thing that is missing for me to give it a 9 is more color on the chicken but that could be the picture they look a little pale to me. I also am not a fan of the parsley between the pieces but I will not grade down for that unless it is completely distracting and hiding the meat which yours isn't.

I would give it a 7. Chix skin needs to be trimmed a little better. And stretched tighter.

The box looks great. I would score it a 9.

Its nice to see good, old fashioned lettuce in the box. Seems like lately, everyone is doing the parsley boxes. And the bunches of parsley placed in between look very nice.

Captain Caveman
10-30-2008, 12:41 PM
I give it an 8. the thigh in the middle, on the left side looks to have issues with the skin (looks rubbery). otherwise it would have been a 9 from me.

The color needs to be just a touch darker also. IMHO

Judge the meat they say.

8

Maybe the picture, the skin does not look as appealing as it could for a 9.

CivilWarBBQ
10-30-2008, 03:00 PM
I'd give it an 8.

As others have said, your skin and trim could be a little better. I also don't like to see greens on top of the meat. Ditch the parsley sprigs in the middle.

7 is generous.

top 2 pieces need to be squared off

skin is shriveling up, needs to be tighter.

MilitantSquatter
10-30-2008, 05:24 PM
I'd give it a solid 8..

Only things I don't like about it is that the skin appears to be rubbery by looks. A little rib more rub on top would also make it a bit more appealing.

As a judge I don't care about the trimmings, but as a cook, a little bit more trimming could be helpful to push the score up for some judges

HBMTN

I'd give it a 7. Nice looking box but I think IMO the skin would have to look more appealing to get a higher score.

Chris Nickelson

the one thing I tell everyone is to make the meat be the focal point not anything else. I don't want parsley or lettuce to catch my eye when looking at a box. I want the meat to stand out and the garnish to just be a backdrop that doen't draw attention.
IMHO.

Frank Sacco

I'm generally not one to judge others boxes. I do read/look over the "judge me threads" to get ideas from others. I think you're headed in the right direction. I recommend starting the chicken cook skin side down for the first 45 min. This will darken your skin a bit. Then flip to complete the cook. Once the chicken reaches desired doneness, sauce and let rest for a few minutes BEFORE assembling your presentation box.

Comparing has a simple definition. In this instance he stated it looked like many other boxes. We are not judging compared to many other boxes. We are also judging the meat, not the other parts of the box. Is it the same color as many other turn ins or are we talking about layout??? What are we comparing to may other boxes? Experienced judge would know not to compare to other boxes.

Your over thinking this in an effort to discount what I said. Your box is un-remarkable. It is like any other box. If your box was special in some way it would not be like any other box. It's average my brother. You can put thoughts and interpitations into my mouth (none of which are true) to make yourself feel better but it's still average. None of that is comparative.

As long as that makes you feel better, I guess I will go with that. I am here for you brother. Please be more specific when you are judging and looking for something special. What makes a box special in your opinion? I am asking seriously, since you are a judge.

What makes mine average, I can live with average, if I thought it was outstanding I would have never put it up here. Explain to me what is wrong with it. Being serious again.

I'll see if I can find pictures of our 5th place Chicken boxes @ Lake Placid and Merrimack or the 8th @ Hudson Valley from this year. But with those results remember they will only be above average, not perfect examples.

There is nothing wrong with it. But the turn-in box doesn't make me say, 'damn, I gotta try that chicken'. It looks good, but nothing special that really makes me want to try it. Thats why it should get a 7 instead of a 9 in my completely subjective opinion.

When someone talks about non-comparison I have to laugh. I believe to do so is not possible and if one says they can do so I would submit they are deluded. I suppose if a judge has never seen a box he can score the first box he has ever seen iwithout comparison.

I agree, yet if there was a simple standard and goal to achieve there would be no need for comparison. Like fries at nathans, if you look next to where they cook them there is a picture of perfect colored fries, that is what the fry cook should try and achieve everytime.

Uhh..no. You where acting like an online bully who enjoys picking a fight. I tried to make nice, but you seem to be rather amused and impressed with what you think is satorial wit. But it is really an empty place in you soul crying out for attention. You need to take a breath and read not only what is in this thread but others you and your teamates have put up, asking for help then ignoring what is offered because you know better.

I will not engage you further and flame you to burnt ends out of respect for Phil...but I ask you look up the word camaraderie. Where's that ignore setting again?

Picking a fight? If I was picking a fight believe me you would have known it. As far a needing attention, once again you are completely wrong. I have plenty of friends a family, and get plenty of attention on a daily basis from my two wonderful daughters. Not really sure where you are coming from when you write you and your teamates? I have accepted plenty of advice that is why I am still here. Sounds to me like you are the sensitive one who needs the attention. Please feel free to hit the ignore button, that is the easiest thing to do, ignore. Don't be so testy, obviously this is another horrible communication online with being unable to show emotion. Good luck and congrats on all those great chicken scores.
