But this is too big to do on a handshake

The basic idea was the Fall has a number of great events
There are more open dates in the spring so we targeted the early season

1/4 of a Million dollars for a BBQ contest! I have only been competing for 6 years, 1st time I won GC it paid $500, we got 1st in Pork, 3rd in Ribs and 2nd in Anything Butt, walked away with a whopping $850 total!

Way to Cynical a person...$250,000 or $100,000 for that matter for a BBQ contest, will have to see it to believe it!

Nah.....It's already on the KCBS website so I don't see why we can't discuss it. If I'm going to travel 3000 miles for a contest it would be nice to have as much info as I can get as early as I can get it. Ok,make all the plans you want,I GUARENTEE the contest will NOT happen on the dates they have listed on the KCBS site.If I were you I would schedule the time off at work, make your room reservations, and heck go buy all your meat and supplies for those dates as well.I however being that I spoke to the organizer of this event at a comp recently would do nothing at all anfd again, wait until entry forms, website, etc. are up AFTER the first of the year. Our money Guy wants to connect to a much larger event with music
Like a one day Stagecoach, Big crowds , Music all day

There is one event in March that may work and another in the Fall
Both are 1st class and would be KILLER

So the original date and site are unlikely
But its Vegas enough said...............

That I dont give you all the facts
:) Much of the time facts have not been decided

LOL I had a plan started working it Like a dog running and barking then
YANK ran out of chain They asked to stop while
they are expanded the event
Yes neat packages are much nicer
But half way into wrapping the package they decided to
make it a motorcycle not a bicycle

So I could just not say anything and let folks buy airplane tickets and book rooms
or I can try to be honest and share those facts that I can
I think you would prefer the latter

What I meant Thom, was that IMHO you shouldn't have said anything until all the details were complete and finalized. I've seen this time and time again on the CBBQA forum.

I only mention it because I think you are really good for BBQ. Your passion is quite obvious. I think have someone with your love of BBQ and your passion on the KCBS BoD would be good for BBQ in the West. But as you may have noticed communication is a key factor for many people in deciding who they vote for.

Vegas is a draw unto itself and is bound to draw major amounts of attention for that reason alone throw in the hinted at large prize pool and I am sure the many of the best teams in the country will be willing to work the contest into their plans......but that being said, it a major logistical undertaking for a large number of them especially any of the east coast teams hoping to make the trip. Firm facts and and a solid plan are needed before many can even begin to make plans.

and what the hell does someone being on TV or being a NFLer have to do with site price? I can pay a couple of hundred bucks and cook next to or near a world class BBQ team at just about any contest that is held around here. Thats more impressive in my book than cooking to next to some a TV or sports star. ( i will admit that I may be jaded after cooking with those stars of Japanese TV, Poobah, Sled and Militanti....)

Some very good points made here. The regular competition teams can/do cook next to or near some of the big names in BBQ & Food at numerous given events. I don't think we (competitors) would pay a higher price for a cook site to be next to a celebrity.

A team that was backed by a sponsor may want to pay extra for that percieved perk.

That kind of atmosphere could be a distraction for the folks that are serious about the competition, and most would prefer to keep that stuff at an arms length, but just close enough to schmooze a bit when convienient.

Just my thoughts. I would like to see the event materialize. That would give me reason to try and make the trip to compete.

I understand all too well why they may have a celeb row and that's cool for those that wish to pay for it. Do it...it's Vegas and it is all about big times and big cash. That really does not bother us but what does......it's a heck of a long way to drive there with our equipment (4600 miles round trip, $2,000 in gas alone) without a sponsor SO......we'll fly out there....buy a Stumps and have it delivered there.....use it...sell it for a song.....and come home with our tail between our legs! In any event....I can see us coming IF a promising event is not near by.

I can't imagine anyone paying extra to cook next to a celeb or whatever. I'm also doubtful that 100 teams will show up in Las Vegas to cook for $100k.

IMO this is where a lot of potential big events have gone bad. The BBQ guy really wants to see it happen so he goes along with the promoters on these kind of things and then when they don't work out it either gets canceled or is a one and out with hard feelings. Can anyone tell us how many teams were at the last Vegas contest?

IMO this is where a lot of potential big events have gone bad. The BBQ guy really wants to see it happen so he goes along with the promoters on these kind of things and then when they don't work out it either gets canceled or is a one and out with hard feelings. Can anyone tell us how many teams were at the last Vegas contest?

It was 89 in 2003 & 58 (I think) for 2004 Heat n up the Bay

So, how do we get from that to over 100? Five years later I just don't think $100k is going to be enough of a draw with the expense involved in traveling there and entry fees etc.

We had 52 for Viejas with $17,000. Las Vegas is a draw in and of itself. Count in Celebrity teams and teams who are really just coming for the party. The music end of it could be a draw depending on who they get to perform. It could happen.

Don't misunderstand, I hope it's well over 100, I just think it would be a mistake to project that for the budget.

I believe that both years was 40K. 12K GC, 6K reserve, 1000 or 1500 each 1st place meat. I cant remember rest of the break down from there. I was new to BBQ at the time, but I think the payout for BBQ GC was bigger than the Royal at the time. The 40K was split between BBQ and Chile,

I spoke to Lester the contact in Vegas a couple fo times. He keeps telling me that deails will be released on the website in a couple of days. It's been almost a month and still nothing. I've heard rumors that this may not happen in March, but later in the spring like May.
Asphalt parking lot in Vegas in May = heatstroke

ThomEmery
11-05-2008, 10:03 PM
If March does not work, the event is most likely going to the Fall

LOL There are only a handful of those larger high visibility $1000 sites
They would not be for BBQ teams ... BBQ Restaurants/Vendors selling to the Public

Bentley
11-05-2008, 10:30 PM
On the sites and entry fees we hope to have a mix
of basic entry at $300ish all the way up to deluxe
"team next to you are guys from TV and or the NFL"
at $1000ish

Will you be competing for the same prize money whether its the $350 entry fee or the $1000?

ThomEmery
11-06-2008, 07:59 AM
The cost of sites/ entry fees has to do with size, location and amenities of those sites.
example 50 amp service costs more than a regular 110 plug
There is one contest prize pool

Now rejoin the KCBS and I will gladly answer more questions for you

Look in a couple of weeks you all will understand what is up with this

Our money Guy wants to connect to a much larger event with music
Like a one day Stagecoach, Big crowds , Music all day

There is one event in March that may work and another in the Fall
Both are 1st class and would be KILLER

So the original date and site are unlikely
But its Vegas enough said...............

I'm not holding my breath

Yep I aint either
Being a organizer and not the promoter
You wait and wait on someone else

This started and
Then "hey We may have the biggest BBQ payout of all time
a couple of weeks after you in the same town Dont know for sure but it looks good
Just wanted to give you a heads up"
was fun to decide how to deal with

Then The money Guys want bigger
yep I aint holdin my breath either

So yea I aint holding my breath either

A few weeks later details of "everythings a go"............
Just didnt stack up
The promoter so believed in this he was willing
to put up his house to back it While he sold the event
I pulled that plug NO WAY
Its a BBQ Contest and that's not worth risking
your house over OK You understand?
Guys get deep in these projects and think Its got to work
But we know it damn sure dont "have to work"
Thats why this is where it is
If this caused you some big problem I am sorry
But none oh you have put up money or risked anything
It may still work He has a location and money
