Just got an update from George:

There's still space at Oinktoberfest for Judges, Volunteers and Teams

You are receiving this email because you expressed an interest in Oinktoberfest, took the Judge's certification class, already signed on for this year, entered a team, judged at a previous event, signed up for our email list or just love BBQ.

TEAMS
There are still a few spaces left for Saturday's KCBS competition. Both of Sunday's contests are still open. The application is HERE (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017pZ8N-JcVWTV6GcNhd5eUQrKhlC1gukNuINrFWtLXmFB39JHXHGBM4eL _JYZyYJQDG_N4eOTUirxolJX9BuGYcJq69GlOD3vkK9c5rFRFi lWSNqDE_ZM_LVVAAUdG5GLXXeD_PX9MUD6xmD7yxKOAw==_). For questions or more information contact George at 716 759 4328 or by email (bbq@oinktoberfest.com_).

JUDGES
We still need judges & volunteers. KCBS certified judges get priority on Sat for judging but there is always room for volunteers & table captains & there is still room at the KCBS Judge's Certification Class. For an application go HERE (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017pZ8N-JcVWTYSJyKHK2xH_iY3ckzKWuq71mHgToW_H-kUPrehAZzUli1lPP3Wk9AFZnd8FNJ9GILDuLQ8U-aeNxDKa4zfFMt_Mx_zIi-C1l2XBMzR2nvZMjapAmPo9J07s7PHLLi49Ca54BKNip5PiDOHy oRK30D_).

There will be an orientation both days so please get there on time. Early check-in is helpful since there are always no shows... just like the airlines. I've learned the hard way about not having enough people on hand. We'll even take standbys.... there is always something to do when there are this many teams. For the schedule: Click HERE (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017pZ8N-JcVWQOmiN2T9cXvXlN245VtbUs5n6pMTLON1RV7zf4GkPsWTC0 UDfQ0hz8WMle5IhxzC3eIlTKRNsDteK85HoHqsT670oSm_ms73 6RcPu1Ky3jDvJ_fa3Yu42f_EXGSJx-sZ4=_).

Remember check-in both Sat (9/27/08) and Sun (9/28/08) is between 10:00AM & 11:00AM. Admission is free for all judges & volunteers. Just let them know at
the gate that you are judging.

Many thanks for your participation in this annual event. Your help is greatly appreciated and is what helps make Oinktoberfest a success.

Sincerely,

George Booth III

We are really looking forward to this one again this year.

We had soo much fun last year.

Hoping to repeat our desert score from last year :-D and improve our meat scores (they were embarrassing).It may have had to do with Rich's Chocolate cake shots and Kenny's Tequila. LOL

Hope Dallas doesn't have a repeat of last year.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

We're looking forward to it too! Nice to not drive cross-country for a change.

Aaron - there is no "big name" band this time around. The musical genre of the weekend will be Blues. The lineup is rumored to be very good. Should be great.

Rob - if you're cooking with Dallas, then your Pig Pass is revoked! Frankly, we're a little disappointed - we were looking forward to learning all of the "secrets" Dallas has been imparting as of late....

I just hope we have good weather. Its always a roll of the dice around here in late Sept.

Looking into my magic 8-ball, I see a "Sledcast" for this weekend:

Sep 26 Friday (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxdetail/PHX:9?dayNum=2) Mainly sunny. Highs 101 to 105F and lows in the upper 70s.
Sep 27 Saturday (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxdetail/PHX:9?dayNum=3) Mostly sunny. Highs 102 to 106F and lows in the upper 70s.
Sep 28 Sunday (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxdetail/PHX:9?dayNum=4) More sun than clouds. Highs 102 to 106F and lows in the upper 70s.

Sorry, that's Phoenix... Let me shake it and try again....

Sep 26 Friday (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxdetail/USNY0276?dayNum=2) Occasional showers possible. Highs in the upper 60s and lows in the mid 50s.
Sep 27 Saturday (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxdetail/USNY0276?dayNum=3) Occasional showers possible. Highs in the upper 60s and lows in the mid 50s.
Sep 28 Sunday (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxdetail/USNY0276?dayNum=4) Few showers. Highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low 50s.

That's what I thought...

Oh well, it will be fun anyway! See you there!

thank you all! I gotta tell ya, the pressure goin' in was killing me!

But, the GC... simply amazing! Driving up Friday morning, we found out our 'meat' Sully couldn't make it (no biggie man, you can't make them all)... that it was just me and Gary (and the Cold Cuts)... well there were lots of heavy sighs for a little while... but somewhere around Rochester those sighs turned into determination and it must have spurred us on! It was farkin' HARD... but in the end, it worked out great.

This is such a FUN, fantastic event! The Great Pumpkin farm is a hoot, absolutely perfect for anyone competing with kids; playground, rides and cool Haunted Houses, gazillions of pumpkins AND a pumpkin cannon; they always pull in great bands, even better people, it's very well run, and fortunately the weather cooperated! Some rain, but it was so mild (60's AND 70's -which is usually NOT the norm), the rain didn't much matter.

Anyone anywhere near Buffalo should come out to the Oink if they can. They called to ten (with ribbons and the coolest trophies) in each category, and I think they paid out further than 5th. They really got it together with sponsors and treating the teams well. Some teams had electricity issues, but since we only run a clamp light and a radio, it didn't matter to us at all.

This event just keeps getting better and better.

I screamed my fool head off for everyone that got called, and I wasn't the only one ... the team cameraderie was awesome!

Congratulations to Regal BBQ for their Reserve... Regal was one of the first teams we ever met, the year BEFORE we even started as lunchmeat, and I am so happy for them.

One more thing, and it kinda ties in to another thread on here, is that after awards, so many people kept asking, not only us, but the organizer too, what is the secret? All I can say is ... consistency in all four categories will eventually get you there... keep practicing and keep plugging along, and learn how to deal with diversity...FAST. When things go wrong at the last minute, figure out how to fix them, and when things go well... write it down!

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE POST SUNDAY'S BACKYARD RESULTS???
inquiring minds wanna know!

Great time once again.

Congrats lunchmeat! Do us proud next month!

No repeat on Sunday for good smoke unfortunately:sad:, our first place chicken wing from last year tanked (that darn bad table :-D) and killed our chances. Good to see everybody!

Peace and pork grease!

I'd just like to extend one more congratulations from another competitor...its an impressive accomplishment.

Thanks for the tip. I was going to ask what your secret was, and I was thinking I should have spent less time spying on 8-ball aaron  (hey, his brother left me in charge of his site for 20 min!), and maybe spent some time checking out your game.

We couldn't believe how well we did, considering we've been at it for such a short time. Its sure a relief when you get rewarded for sending in something you know is really good. I guess we're starting to get a handle on this whole 'que thing.

and after straight 24 hrs of meat and beer, my body was dying for one of those baby bananas.

Actually, Buffalo is often referred to as nickel city. Its a reference to the bison on the indian head nickel. Choosing a team name was sure hard, but somehow this just sounded right, and made sense when I drew the piggy bank with a bison on a nickel.

I've got about 100 baby bananas left right here on my counter.... Just showing spots now so they are ready... I wasn't sure I could find them when I needed them on Sat so I stocked up to be sure I could have enough good ones. I wish you had asked for some, I've got too much banana bread to make now that I didn't hand them out!

We had a great time again this year, Congrats to all the teams, especially Nickel City for their great gains and to Lunchmeat for the 3'er!

I can verify that. It was our very first sanctioned competition, and we got called 10th in brisket. (I was pretty jazzed.) Anyway, in addition to the ribbon, we got a check for $25.
