The wife and I are thinking of coming up to New Paltz for Hudson Valley Ribfest the weekend of 8/15-17 and wanted to know which teams will be competing. We will just be hanging out not competing or judging. Also, what hotels/motels are in the area?

There is a link from the chamber on the contest page with the local spots to stay. I stayed at the Econolodge last year ( I think).
Check em out they are all basic comfort and right there in the area.
(if I can find the link, I'll send it to you.)

(Actually it was the Super 8, pm sent)

we are so there!
There are not many places to stay in the immediate area, I think the Super 8 is about it.
If you want to show the wife a grand weekend head up to the Mohonk House (http://www.mohonk.com/)
Newburgh is only one exit down the Thruway and offers much more in the way of hotels. Poughkeepsie is also an easy ride, just across the river and also offers much more in the way of hotels.
Newburgh or Poughkeepsie are an easy 30 minute drive to the contest.

Thanks Ted, but Arlene's idea of camping out is going to a Holiday Inn. Not quite a nature girl.
Which Super 8 are teams staying at? Kingston,Highland,New Paltz or Poughkeepsie?

Lot's of local radio advertising the past 2 days for the event. Does a good job explaining there is food to eat and the rest compete. If we have last years weather (other than the microburst) it should be packed again.

Also if anyone needs specific local information (non-contest related) feel free to ask a local. (me)

The RGC was nice which included 3 top 10's with a 3rd call for pork. Our team consisted of Poobah, Yak, James Danny and myself. I thought we were very well coordinated and had no major or even minor hiccups. Teamwork all weekend was on point from prep, garnish, pit management, turn in boxes and breakdown. Can't ask for much more.

Back at work this am, actually feeling much better than I did, bad back this weekend, sleeping on truck bed may have influenced that.... Anyway, I had a great time, and a Skippy burger, and learned some new things. One of the most important new things was that you should always check which is the lid on the turn in box so you don;t build a tedious bed of parsley in it only to find out you are upside down....GGGRGRRRRRR...had to walk away and let Phil do that one. Not sure, but I think if they are going to do that again (reduce the print output handed out) it needs to consist of our raw scores (as it does) AND how we placed in each category... I can see wanting to reduce the paper, but at least make the ONE page they provide have more than just our raw scores... Lots of whitespace that could provide some additional useful info... Just my $0.02.
Thanks to LindaM for posting the NEBS full data (above, PDF format) hoping to see the KCBS full data soon? Also - if there's a place to find this info on the KCBS site, I sure can't find it - I could use enlightenment.

I'm all for being green but, 250ish sheets of paper are such a small drop in the bucket compared to the output of the entire festival. How many of the giant ribfest brochures did they print? Every one is just going to print them out today anyway. Just my .02.

P.S. I printed my NEBS sheets double sided reducing my impact by %50!!!

You aren't missing anything. Under Events on the KCBS site they post scores from contests... however this is the only one that does not have "results in" for this past weekend, which is interesting.

I'd rather have scoresheets then be given free trashbags all weekend... I can't bit// and moan about how trashbags scored in taste on the ride home.

What about using recycled paper? What if you brought your own? I am all for going green but to do something like this the scores should be then automatically sent to the teams the day of. If they are really concerned about it more effort should be focused on recycling aluminum from teams etc.

Thats exactly what I was thinking, something with real impact. The organizers might not understand the value in those sheets. Our entire weekend boiled down to a few numbers on a sheet of paper, and then make us wait:shock:.

OK now everyone has had their 2 cents now I want mine.

Here is the deal, Green is great but here is what you guys don't get.....
The paper is not the only issue. There are no copy machines available and we are not talking about 50 sheets, we did print the individual sheets for each team, it is another 300 + sheets we would need to print, and collate. We barely finished in time for the awards as it was. The printing on printers would take another 1-2 hours. Are you saying you would rather wait until 6 for the awards?

Not trying to be smart but in the past we used the copier at the fairgrounds and they felt that much printing was putting too much wear and tare on their equipment. It also takes 1 ink cartridge to print that many copies. Maybe this will help you understand.

Now if we could get someone this wifi on site to email to everyone on the spot they could spend the time and you would have it after awards or maybe someone would donate a copier to print and collate the results.

This is how I learned of our RGC....my back had been killing me all weekend. So I was getting up after the four groups, we had one call, I knew the odds were that one of the teams with multiple calls would get the GC and RGC. Si I started slowly walking back and phil was walking over in another direction. I had some friends there and was saying good by to them and then explained how sometimes, a team may not get any walks but still win as their consitentcy was better than a shot here and there. So I said my goodbye's and walked about another 100 painful yards when I heard "...BBQ Brethren!" Needless to say I was stunned, and in so much discomfort I could'nt walk fast enough to get into the photo....so, no me in the win, but in this case a photo doesn't prove anything! Scott

I emailed Stephanie and told her how important those scores are to us. I told her if she ever competed she would understand better. I also didn't like that they only called the winner for the apple category up. I worked my ass off for that category and to come in 3rd and not get to go up, and at least get a hand shake or certificate?? beside those two problems everything else was great!

Thats funny..

the entire 60 seconds is a blur.. I was sitting with chris hoping he got the GC which may put us as an auto in the Jack. So him and i are sitting their yappin and we shut up just enuf to listen to GC/RGC.

Last thing in my peabrain is that we were in the running with just one call. Now here i am PRAYING that Chris doesn't get the RGC call and I'm guessing on Lakeside or lo-n-slo. So we wait..

and they call BBQ-Brethren:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

.. What I do remember is my eyes bugged out of my head and chris is laughing going thats YOU!! ..I think I may have been doing some yellin... just a little..

had a great time this weekend.. i think it was one of the most fun ones this season..no problems, good spot, great weather, and mades lots of rounds too. usually glad the season is winding now, but for some reason im looking forward to the next one.

ya know what i learned..

When ya get a bunch of top 5 or whatever calls and you see your in the running for GC/RGC, its no surprise, just apprehension, prayers and crossed fingers.

but when it happens out of the blue with one call or no calls.. Holy chit.. THATS A SURPRISE!!! WHAT A FARKIN RUSH.

AND ANOTHER THING.

Our beloved Linda Mullane has a bit of a playful/mean streak in her.

heres what she did...

Afte telling me the WRONG TIME for the cooks meeting(yeah yeah linda, excuses excuses.. she says she meant the NEBS cook meeting, not KCBS).. whatever..

No one form our team showed up at the KCBS cooks meeting to get the boxes. So she gave them to another one of The Brethren and told them to wait until I came to get them.

So when i went to her for the boxes, she says she gave them to another team to hold for me and I have to go get them. They also had the apples for the apples category which is part of the ribfest tradition.

Ok. "so what team" I asked.

Her response...... "Im not telling you.":twisted: YOU have to go ask everyone.

WTF!!:eek::eek::icon_pissed I gotta do WHAT???..

Yup.. as my punishment for not going to the cooks meeting, which BTW, I always forget to do.. she made me walk from team to team... site to site..

It started out funny...

Do you have our boxes? ...

excuse me do you have our boxes?

hey guys.. did linda give u our boxes to hold..

then it turned into...

YO! YOU GOT MY FARKING BOXES!

All the time Linda is watching me bounce from tent to tent and shes grinning.... and the teams are laughing their butts off when I tell them I'm being punished and they are part of my timeout.

Hot dog truck offered me their nail gun to shoot into Lindas tires.

Then... thank you Big Barry Q.. Trip one....i asked some folks at his tent and they told me no.. but i knew they werent team.. so trip 2 back there I saw trish(Barrys wife), and she had no idea what i was talking about, same thing at trip 3...

Linda saw me go back there 3 times and realized somethings wrong.. THEY had my stuff.. so she felt guilty and went back and got the boxes for me.. delivered them herself....WHEN I WASNT LOOKING.. so I kept going from team to team being abused.. One team offered me their own boxes, but i wasnt allowed to change the numbers. ha ha very funny.. Everyones a comedian.

After the first lap, Im ready to give up.. i told murry(the other rep) that I am turning my stuff in in half pans, and i dont want to hear any grief.

I get back to my camp.... and the boxes are sitting on the table.. YAkfishinfool decides to pull my chain even more and tell me...'those boxes"?? They been sitting here for an hour. Fark.. Well.. at least I got to wander arond and say hi to alot of folks.

The moral of the story..,

Beware.. Linda Mullanes got an evil mind.:cool:

Nice event, All of our neighbors were helpful with advice as we still try to figure stuff out, and everyone was fun as usual.

And Chris, I hope you got through town with the directions, good thing I gave them to you before the "mistake", huh?

thanks Eric..
unfortunately I think it took the wind out of our sails so bad that we just wanted the whole thing to be over...

We don't see 2 very often and to not even get to walk was a little disappointing. So yes, you can be RGC and get $20 and two tiny plastic trophies...

Congrats to Chris and Phil and all that did well in BBQ...hope to see everyone in Westport but glad its not next weekend!!

I was just about to forget about the whole Going Green, and no Score sheets, until Rolf Just posted on the YahooUserGroup, that it would have cost them an extra $50 a team to rent a copier?? $2650.00
Come on, I just priced copiers last week and that number is just crazy!
Did they think if they said they were "going green" nobody would say anything and the real reason was they just didn't have the right equipment to get the score sheets to us.

I did the math too... Didn't add up.

2650 to rent a copier, chit I'm in the wrong business. I would have rented them mine for half price and made the copies, chit I would have donated the paper too and still made a thousand net.

My response to Rolf:

Rolf,
Thanks again for another great event!
Here's my 2 cents:
Delay the awards. 4:00 or 4:30 would have been fine. As long as you start exactly at that time, everyone should be happy. Starting after the announced time is frustrating as we could be packing up instead of waiting for the awards to start. The changed times of the cooks meetings and the awards were not appreciated and led to confusion.
As for the printing costs, every other event I have competed in prints the results and are done on time. If you think about it, teams are paying a couple of hundred dollars in entry fees and they expect a "simple" thing like a few pages of printouts not to be a problem. How do other events do it? To suggest that the teams would have to pay an extra $50 is a bit shocking ($2,700.00 to rent a copier/printer for 2 days and 500 sheets of cheap paper?)
You could buy a 23ppm printer/copier for $400, toner for $180 and $20.00 worth of paper for a total of ~$650. It would take about 30-45 minutes to print the sheets.
As for the collating and stapling, you have a number of volunteers and it's only 54 packets. Most printers can collate so all you have to do is separate by team and staple.
I would look into a printouts sponsor! Have their logo/website/phone number (pre?)printed on each sheet! Bottom or the whole back of the sheet. Have them supply the printer/copier and the pre-printed paper, too! I would suggest a local merchant that would benefit from the departing teams on Sunday: "Stop in for a [free/discounted/2-fer] item on the way home!!" Just an idea to consider. If a merchant, they need to have a large parking lot to accomodate the trailers, etc.
See you next year!

Reply from Rolf! I like these guys...

Greg,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions!
Your point is well taken. I will make sure we have a solution for next year to
have the tally sheets available after the awards ceremony. I like the idea with
the printing sponsor (...why didn't I think of that!) I will also review the
timing for the awards with the RibFest committee to make sure we will have
everything ready in time.

Kind regards,
Rolf Oelgeschlager
