I've melted a hamburger bun sack to the lid. That was a pain to get off. still has a little spot on it. Other than that no mods really. I did make an elevated rack for the WSM out of a 18" grate and some SS bolts, and I use it more in the 22.5 kettle than the WSM. It is great for Roadside chicken or anything else that would benefit from the extra space between the coals and the food.

I’ve used Weber kettles since I was 16 (I’m 39 now). My parents had this huge/fancy natural gas grill. One day our Ace Hardware had a sale so I bought one. That was the best burgers I’ve ever had. Been hooked ever since.
I just wish Weber would come back out with the red colored ones. I’d be buying three of them. One for cooking and the other two…just in case.

i have three 22.5 kettles. i need about four more. i like looking at them and cooking on them. i'm hard pressed to justify using anything else for grilling or low and slow. i think they are as close to perfect as a tool can get.

I really love my Weber's too. I have done some extreme mods to my 22.5, because I wanted a side burner and shelf, which were chronicled under the FrankenWeber thread (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41895&highlight=frankenweber) and have done a few more mods (added hook for Cast Iron Pan, mounted the grill tools and the propane tank) so here is the final result...
16621
Also I made smokers out of two 18.5 kettles I had and those are chronicled under the Bride of FrankenWeber thread (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42961&highlight=frankenweber), and I have mounted both of these on casters, but don't have a recent photo. So this is basically what they look like...
16622
I also made a custom water baffle from some beer cans for the 22.5 chronicled under the Smokin on the kettle thread (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38163) and have since made a revised version out of a coffee can, and some aluminum tape.
I am thinking I am going to do the Mods to my SJP that JD did, but haven't quite gotten enough time recently.
Love my Weber equipment. Top of the rung for the backyarder like myself IMO.

Personally, I think that when the Germans invented the Bratwurst, they did so knowing that in the fullness of time Mr. Stephens and Mr. Weber were going to invent and market the kettle grill.
They were made to be together.

One of the first things i bought when i moved into my first apartment (1980) was a 22.5" kettle. I still have it. It has faded to a mottled gray, has one wheel that falls off, is missing half of the handle and has a dent in the lid from my wife's car, but it still cooks! I call it "Lucky". I now have an older model Performer and, as of yesterday at the Elk Grove IL Rib fest I have a One Touch Silver still in the box. It may be time to retire "Lucky".

So far I've rescued 2 from cl(10 bucks each), and one from the neighbors trash.
One from the neighbors trash is used almost daily, and one of my others was morphed into my uds.
Seems that all of them were hardly ever used, cleaned up real easy.
I love looking at the news at the hardware store for.......$84.00.

N8man - Nice!
Started my outdoor cooking on a kettle. It is tired and I need to dump it on one of y'all. Cooks great, looks good, but the lid does not fit perfect due to a fall on the top handle. Pop gave me a Performer so the 22.5 needs to go. May post a thread one of these days to off load the old one.
Everyone should have to try a Kettle.

I was never really into Weber kettles until i saw a Yellow Homer Simpson 22.5" on craigslist for $20. I thought it was one fugly grill! I posted it on the WSM board and people started responding about how rare they were, it was gone by the time I replied, but someone off the site got it. Then someone was lamenting the fact that Weber should not have discontinued the Red Kettles-sometimes these are a dime a dozen around here. So I started picking them up. I'm partial to the Reds and I've flipped a few, had a Green for about an hour and sold it and I'm rebuilding a Genesis gasser with a Blue lid to match a Master-Touch to take to my Moms house. Free to cheep is how I roll with them.

My uncle gave me his 22.5" Weber Kettle when I was 21 (over 10 yrs ago:eek:) and that's when I started messing around with smoking spare ribs. Mostly it was burning spare ribs. I started by having the butcher cutting each individual rib (as opposed to cooking the slab as a whole). I burned many a rib before I finally figured out how to smoke those ribs. Adding wood chips eventually. Low and slow. That Weber was my learning partner. I think Im gonna tear up. I loved that thing. I eventually burned it out. :icon_sad Im sorry.... i can't go on..... too painful.....

Very versatile piece of equipment. Searing heat or slow and low, you just can't beat them. I've had my OTG for two years. Its well traveled and seasoned. Took it to the Outer Banks with the Family last year for grilled steaks, fresh seafood, and even a smoked Waygu Oyster Roast (from where the flat irons get cut). While the cost is reasonable, the results are exceptional.
Only wish Weber seemed to embrace the Competitive side of BBQ. If there was a Super WSM or a Kettle in between the 22.5" and the Ranch, I'd be a buyer of both.

I own several, some bought some rescued from certain doom.
I have made two into the magnum cookers, I don't have a pic, but here is a link from where I got the idea and plans from.
http://www.randyq.addr.com/friends/mikey/magnum_force.htm
our bbq team has competed for going on three years with these cookers, and have a few awards for the effort.
My wife spied a red 22 1/2 someone had set out to be picked up, and upon further investigation we found it to be a complet unit but had a broken leg, and the wheels were shot. I had the spare legs and wheels I saved from the magnum project, so into the car it went.
our team won a 1st place chicken trophy on that weber last year at the MT State championship KCBS style competition in Stephensville. Used the side charcoal baskets to cook the chicken indirect.
the handle fell off of it last year, so I will need to bolt it on, and give it a paint job.

Do any of you have issues with the one touch vents? Mine always seem to get bent or worn out, and don't seal as well as they should.
I wish I could find a few with the old style vents, like they have on the WSM.
Also, I managed to lose one of the bottom washers, and had a heck of a time finding one that would fit. My neighbor is a metal machinist, so he took a flat washer and made it work for me.

I have 3 - 22 1/2ers now. The first is a bar b kettle which I paid $20 on CL for (EZ 1998 ). That is the one that has been used the most. The second is a OTS I got for free (DA 2001). It is a piece though. Don't know what I am going to do with it. I might donate or trade it to someone in St. Louis looking to build an UDS (I only have the lid and kettle, got rid of everything else, like I said this thing is a POS). The third one I rescued out of the trash tonight. It is a yellow bar b kettle (D 1982). Someone tried to spraypaint it black so I will need to get that off (any suggestions???). Once cleaned up, this will be my keeper. I will then use the original mentioned above to make my UDS with as I only need 1 kettle.

I mask the rust spots off and just paint the chipped ceramic areas and try to blend it in, it won't be perfect, but from a distance you can't tell. I don't know why, but it seems the Red ones get beat up more than any Black kettle I've had. The Reds shine up pretty good with fine steel wool and if you really want it to shine I buff them with Meguiars Sealer/Glaze.
Dupli-Color Engine Red is a pretty good match.

I learned on a Webber Kettle more years ago than I would like to admit
I have two 22 1/2" er's now... One dated "B" (was going to be a UDS) and the other dated "DI" (a Gold series). I bought them both new but about 25 :?: or 30 years apart. I also had a spare lid given to me with no date code... "UDS" mod. Saved the "B" from becoming a "UDS" for now anyway.
Rescued two Smokie Joes from "Freecycle" One dated "DH" and the other is dated "DD"... "DD" is going to be used for a mini UDS. The "DH" was "NEW", well it was used 2 times... New enough for me. I use it for grilling a couple of times a week, just my wife and I, no need to fire up the 22 1/2er's after work just for a burger or steak :-D
Not sure why I need two of each  I just need more time to used them maybe

I have had a 22 1/2 inch Weber Kettle non stop since 1979 when I was 19. I think I have bought a total of three during that time. I have rescued a bunch and given them to friends and family.
My favorite mod is to raise the fire grate so that it is about 3 inches under the cooking grate for steaks.

Growing up we had a kettle. Many a great meal was made on that old kettle. My dad, who passed this last month, would man that grill with an enthusiasm I had never seen as a child. I learned my chops on that old grill. He would cook BBQ chicken that was out of this world. He would oil the chicken and put them on the grill. Then he would constantly butter them and duck as the smoke would engulf the deck. As he got older he gave up on the kettle and gave it to my brother in law.
My Brother in law had to let go of my fathers weber just this last month, as rust took its toll. it was beyond saving. It served us for well over 30 years. It was replaced with, you guessed it, a weber kettle.
My Blue 22.5 was rescued about 6 years ago. I saw it sitting on the side of the road, with a missing bolt on the leg. The sign said free to good home, so in the back of my delivery truck it went. It was in perfect condition, but did fall over and dent the lid slightly. It sits in the backyard and does its duty with no muss, no fuss. Every one knows I mean business when I get out the weber.
I also have my weber genesis for those quick grills. But lets not talk about that.

Just got my first kettle a few months ago - 22.5" OTG. Intended on having it for weeknight cooks or as something I could grill on while smoking in the CG or UDS. It has immediately become my main grill because of it's versatility and ease of use.

I love that Kettle Kart. Kicks arse!

I purchased a demo model 22.5" Weber OTS last year and absolutely LOVE it! I am amazed by all the diffrent setups you can use to cook on one of these, from smoking BBB to grilling steaks it can not be beat! My next purchase for it will be a rotisserie setup for chickens. I found a video on youtube of a guy doing brick-oven style pizza on his performer, gonna be doing that later in the week. Here is a link for the pizza. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVeQBHludGs

It's an "F" (1984) 22.5" One Touch Silver (OTS) Wood handles are in good shape, rust and chipped porcelain in the usual spots, but not bad for a 24 year old Kettle. And the price was right, FREE.
And I finally got a BLUE lid for the Genesis Silver B, I picked up a couple months back. Also FREE

Stopped by the local ACE Hardware store yesterday to inquire about the new 26" Kettle that is being released in 2009.
No word on it yet. They took my name and phone number and promised to call me the minute it is available to order. Also, will be waiting for the new 22" WSM.
They wanted to know how I knew all this information and they were dealers and didn't know it. I explained that they needed to be part of the BBQ Brethren. Let's see if they show up.

I will announce my membership to the Kettle Appreciation Society. I have had mine for a little over 1 month. And Wednesday, this past wendnesday. I grilled Brat's the way they were supposed to be grilled. Over charcoal.
My gasser usually cooked them too fast, though decent, were never what I had imagined what they should be. I see the light in clear view.

Ookaaaay, I'm now officially worried about you Doc!
The more I use mine the more impressed I get at how easy they are to cook on. We had friends over recently and I did cedr plank salmon fillets, bacon burgers from the local pork farm (yes, they were very good!) and some good quality Lincolnshire sausages. Yes, I know, no pictures=didn't happen, I forgot OKAY!!!
Anyhoo, Mrs Browser commented on how much more relaxed cooking on the kettle seemed to be compared to our old gasser which "...always had huge flames coming out of it"! I had to agree and I realised I hardly ever do totally direct grilling any more as I always bank the coals either to the side or down the middle leaving enough space to indirect cook most of the food as (a) it cooks mor eslowly & evenly and (b) it tastes better that way. I'm even happier since my birthday on the 22nd 'cos I got a Weber warming rack and side table and, yes, I promise I'll take some pictures next time I'm grilling:biggrin:

Fordman,
If you take those handles off, sand them, and hit them with a couple coats of teak oil all over, they will look like new and the teak oil is water resistant. Only downside is that the Weber logo will likely be gone.
Or, present day resin ones will fit, but you lose the retro look.
EDIT: Just popped into the Virtual Weber Bullet site, and there was a thread about wood handles. Looks like some in Fort Worth is selling them. Here's a link http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/for/943199314.html

I scored my first weber for $4.00 and it included an unopened bag of Kingsford (small):-D. I asked the kitchenbitchamatic to pick up a pork butt, not a shoulder (after 40 years, I should have know better!). She came home with home with a 5.6 lb "Bone-in shoulder pork butt" for $10.00.
So, I placed it on my weber score and the lid would not close, DUH. So off to HD for Mod material to make an "extender". While I was at it, I added a Charcoal "ring" (left over expanded metal from my NB fire box design) and a water pan (cut down large Bush Bean tin can). The "extender" worked better than I expected, no smoke leaks!
The extender is made from Aluminum roofing ridge material. It is sold at Home Depot in the roofing area and comes in several widths in 25 ft long rolls (they also have galvanized, do not use that). I bought the 8 inch width and used two layers where the second layer over laps the first by about 2.5 inches.
This worked out great as the food rack lets the extender fits snug between it and the inside lip of the bottom half of the grill. I used 5 Aluminum "pop rivets" at the layer over lap to hold it together. The extension is easily removed and inserted while attending to the fire.
I was very happy with the fit as NO SMOKE came out at either end of the extender and heat loss on the Aluminum extender was about half of what the black sections of the Weber was radiating.
Mods in place and some pecan wood chips I was ready to Q!
Next mods, I plan to add a bird spinner to the extender, modify the air intake and add an ash catcher attachment, when I get around to it. The existing ash holes clog up on long unattended cooks.
Some "PRON" below...temp was stable at 222 F for 1.5 hrs, so I went inside to watch football and when half time was over and me and the game were in the third quarter, I rembered to go check on the Q. Temp was down to 140 F because the bottom holes were cloged full of ash, duh, more mods needed! It is not a NB Bandera, no ash room. So I adjusted the fire and it got done and my butt was great.
Slaw and smoked pork butt great eats!:icon_bigsmil

Thanks,
Looks like the Green one is from 1996 and the $4.00 small one that I bought is from 1981, it only has a "C" stamped on the vents.:eusa_clap

Nice ones Eaton, just goes to show that the Weber Kettles are the best charcoal grills (http://www.bobbysbest.com/Best-Gas-Charcoal-Grill-Reviews.html) every made. 20+ years old and they are still shiny as new! Though I'm sure they've had good upkeep

I made a couple of mods to one of my ol weber kettles. The damper blades got bent when I tryed to make it digest some lump and wouldnt choke the fire completly so I welded a ring to the damper blades.

The stock fire grate let to much charcoal fall through so I covered it with a piece of 3/4x9 expanded.

Made a ring to hold some charcoal for low-n-slo. Along with some 6" pieces to allow more air under the charcoal and help let the ashes fall through.

A new cooking grate.

I'm to cheap to buy a performer so I emprovised. I also made a tool to scrape the grease and stuff with, an old hoe that I ground to the same radius as the kettle and a log / charcoal lighter. I stick the log lighter into the air supply on my bbq to get it started also.

.
Its all tuned up now and I can get well over 12 hours cook time from 1 load of charcoal at 225*. Figured I might as well have a snack while I waited for it to burn out.

Cool! Do you light the coals in one area on the outside of that ring and let it snake around?

OK, one more question about the charcoal ring, do you have it set up in some way that it snakes around in only one direction, or does it burn around both sides until it reaches the opposite side and burns out?

Love this! Is the 6" expando on the inside around the edges just to hold the fuel? What is the diameter of your charcoal ring?
Don't tell the drumheads but with something like this I might be able to nix the UDS...not that I'm looking for a reason to do that but if you can easily get 12 hours at 225* .

I start the fire so it only goes one direction generaly. I just leave a space between the begining and the end, about 2". If the fire jumps to the other end I just get my tongs and move the hot coals to the other side, but its not usualy a problem because the one touch gives outstanding controll.
If I want to fast track and cook at 300* or so I will light both ends because it tends to overheat the meat on one side if I dont.
The pic with the fattys was from before I started using the 6" pieces around the outside and the charcoal would not burn thoroghly every time. With them in there occasionaly there will be a filbert sized chunk of lump charcoal or wood that dident burn all the way.
If I am in a hurry I light about 1/3 of a weber chimney of charcoal and dump it in then add the rest of the charcoal + chunks.

I think to make it work on the UDS youll need to make a basket shaped like a doenut with the hole in the middle about 6" wide, and the about 10+ inches tall. Youll need about 1/2 - 3/4" space all the way around between the barrel and the basket I assume. To get an efficient burn.
On Bbq Bubba's basket, over at TQJ, his basket is 8" tall and about 19" wide. You would need to make up for the volume lost in the center of the doenut to get the burn time you would from a traditional style basket by making the doenut, or whatever you want to call it, taller.
On edit:Bubba's ring cant be 19" it is a 8" X 48" piece overlaped about 1-1/2 - 2". My ring is 14".

Hey y'all. My first post. I started with a Smokey Joe over 20 years ago. Great little grill. After the legs rusted off a friend took it and fabricated new legs and kept it smokin'. Later I got a 22.5 which served me well for years. I had to leave it in New Mexico cuz it wouldn't fit in the trailer when I moved back to TX. :frown: I will have another one! I have a new Smokey Joe which works fine for the wife and I, but too small for entertaining. I've been using a cheap Uniflame kettle for now, but it's not the same. Definitely not built to last like a Weber.
Glad to be here. Lots of great info. Watch for my post in a few days about my rescue of a NB offset smoker. Needs work but the firebox and cooking chamber are still intact.

This is good...thanks. Actually not thinking of doing this with UDS but I also have a Weber 22.5 that i was considering this for.
