I was at a huge flea market yesterday and ran across a large aluminum stoke pot. A couple inches from the bottom was an aluminum divider for steaming veggies. I was making a UDS and needed a fore basket. Here is how it started out.

Well, after the initial burn I bet you can guess the rest. Just in case your having trouble, this is what I found this morning.

As luck would have it, the charcoal grate from and 18in Weber fits like a glove!!!

The cool part is all of the ash settles in the bottom of the pot, easy clean up!

I wasnt sure how it would work but then after thinking about it I decided it was nothing but a 32 quart chimney.

isn't"T burning aluminum a bad idea with charcoal running up to 1100 F there might be issues?

I really hadnt thought about that, and I have no idea. I am sure someone here will tell me if I am taking a gamble.

I would be careful with that. Have a look at this link on the OSHA page:

http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/healthguidelines/aluminum/recognition.html

As you can see in the article, there is some evidence which may show a link between aluminum levels in the body and Alzheimers. I would stick with (non-galvanized) steel over aluminum for any part of the firebox.
