Hey All,

I'm just starting out and I didn't have a decent knife to slice meat with, so I picked up an electric Black and Decker knife from Wally World for around $18. It seemed to do a pretty good job on the pork shoulder I cooked last weekend.

Why should I go out and purchase a nice carving knife for Q'ing? Or should I? I'm not planning on competing -- just cooking for family and friends.

Thanks,
Bret

A good set of dependable knives are a must for any type of cooking. Just like wood working or metal working, having the right tools makes all the difference.

They don't have to be the best money can buy, but you've got to have some good ones.

Agree. A good set of knives is the most important and most used tools a cook will have. You may not use each pan you have every time, a stove, a grill and so on, but you will use some kind of a knife for something every time you cook or prepare food.:-D

So should I not use the electric for slicing pork and beef, or should it just be another tool in my arsenal?

Thanks,
Bret

Here's what I would do: Buy a set of those Miracle Blades that Mista has for comps. They are about $20 and you don't have to worry about them. My .02 MMV

Thanks,
Breti have some good knives & a slicer but i prefer an electric knife for smaller briskets(or just 1) as it takes longer to clean the slicer than to cut the meat.
it's just preference- do what works best for you.

I use my electric knife all the time but my wustof (in my kitchen) and forchner ( in my comp set) are well worth money. Like said before they are tools and you get what you spend.

I love my Forschner knives. I have an electric but prefer the Forschner Granton Slicer for butts and briskets. I bought them from www.cutleryandmore.com, but you will find reasonable prices all over the web. Check out Ambrosi Brothers in Kansas City for knives and sharpening. They rock.
