Back in September i went to Salisbury to oversee an installation and the coordinator of the project was a local. She took to me dinner to this place (http://www.cactustaverna.com/)

It was 'bring your own' last year. But I spoke to John, the rep (sorry forget his last name), after the contest last year and he said the platters were a logistics nightmare and they would go to 1/2 alums this year. Don't know what will actually happen this year. I'd come prepared for either scenario

Chris, if I remember right, they just put whatever the chefs choice was turned in on a table outside the judges tent to be picked up by the teams. How is that a logistical nightmare? I think the 1/2 pans would take away from the presentation of some of the turn ins. JMHO.

It was difficult to stage and present 70 some odd platters to the judges in a timely fashion.

just to stir the pot... a coupla years back we took 5th with ABT's in yer standard 9x9 styro... it's open garnish isn't it?, so I would think you can put whatever you want in the turn-in container. I haven't gotten a letter yet about that.

weather-wise, as long as it isn't anything like two years ago's hellish downpours, it's all good.

Chris, I guessed you forgot about what happen two years ago. Total domination (3 first place ). Have you started your rain dance yet? Oh and by the way who was the other team that took the only other first that year. Huuuum. Let me think? Good luck to all. Steve, I wouldn't take that bet. It sounds like a set up!

I think the only fair thing to do here would be for both of you to bring a bottle to Salisbury. I will hold the bottles throughout the weekend, (along with some shot glasses) and give them to the winner after the awards. I promise not to open them and or sample them, they will be completly full upon delivery.

We had a team meeting tonight and for a bit we had planned to order a barrel of bourbon and give it out to competitors in 16 oz cups Friday night.

Then we decided that to much would find it's way into our cups so no barrel. Instead we will focus on anything butt and Purdue!

Yep, anyone can get in on it... just let me know, I should be onsite early Friday. I will take all money for safe keeping until the rib awards.

This time out I thought we'd go with "Winner takes it, they can do what they want to with it"... seeing as it's still pretty early in the season and some of us could probably use the extry cash to do MORE competitions.

BUT... donating it to the charity of your choice is always a good thing!!

Wow, we got our butts (pun intended) handed to us. Our best category was 16th in brisket. Had a great time. We were set up next to a good friend who was doing their 1st competition and were 2 sites away from Phil and Sled. Phil, it was a pleasure meeting you, not to mention getting fed by you and your assistance with my "killer" brisket.:-P I do remember Michele (Lunchmeat) getting a walk in brisket. I did meet some new Brethren and had a great time.

We had a team meeting tonight and for a bit we had planned to order a barrel of bourbon and give it out to competitors in 16 oz cups Friday night.

Then we decided that to much would find it's way into our cups so no barrel. Instead we will focus on anything butt and Purdue!

Tom
Well i guess that decision worked out pretty well.

Well i guess that decision worked out pretty well.

Guess it did. Sorry I didn't get up to meet you. When ever I walked by you looked like you had your hands full.

On the way up Christy & I decided to intro our selves to Michelle & get in on the rib bet. We got there later than we wanted and never got around to it. My second thought when I pulled my ribs off was "good thing I didn't give Michelle $20" Thinking back on it I probably should have.

This was a great contest, Congrats to Stoddard & Brown and Uncle Jed on there impressive finishes. Congrats to all that called.

It was a very dissapointing weekend for us as we thought we cooked some of our best food ever. I thought our boxes looked great and I joked around before the awards saying "we didn't screw anything up". Turns out the judges thought we screwed everything up and we finished 77th. I dont think we finished above 50th in any category and didnt get 1 "9", and unfortunatley i have no excuses.

I look forward to the next one.

Steve,

Sometime it happens that way. There were times we hated our turn-in and walked. There is no sense to it at all. We chalk it up to WTFK and just try again the next contest. Even the best of teams have an off day. Keep your chin up. We know you guys can cook well and win at any time.

I had the best time, as usual, except that Sully wasn't with us.

It was fantastic to see Stoddard and Brown grab the Grand, and Uncle Jed taking Reserve was the cherry on the top!

That rib bet was the most fun I have had in a while! I got to meet and talk to so many people, and catch up with some friends I had'nt seen in TOO long. We ended up with 31 teams in on the wager, for a total of $620!!! which went to Uncle Jed for his third place finish! No tax forms on that...heheh.... just a STACK of cash! This is not the last time I will be doing this, only next time... I think I'll take tips for running all over creation to get everyone involved. I was wandering around, encouraging people to get in on the bet, and all of a sudden it was fifteen minutes before the Perdue turn-in!!!! EEEEK!

Note to everyone who comes from up heah... TAKE THE TAPPAN ZEE!!!!!

Talk about your long ride home...we left at about 7p.m. and got home at 5:00 AM!!!

Way fun contest, one of the best I've ever been to, and I'll see y'all next year!

FARK!!!!! thats TWICE i lost a post in this thread..

One more time..

all I can say is DONT fall asleep at 3AM with the meat 1t 170+....and wake up at 6.

fun time.. TOTALLY EXHAUSTING.... First time out this year and trying to brush off the rust.. but I was beat to chit even before the contest started. Got in at 3am, caught 2 hours sleep friday AM, then started the marathon.... by midnight Friday night I was draggin my arse.. Gotta get back on track or Im gonna be bringing up the rear all season. I think we made 33(or 34) out of 84.

I was so tired I passed out at 1am and killed 3 briskets..(and the butts). They were so bad i thought i was doomed and considered a NoShow in brisket. There was just no way to get even a decent slice, but was talked out of it by troutman. :eusa_clap Resorted to trying to salvage a few decent chunks to turn in some burnt ends. Ironically, the judges thought brisket was our best showing at around 21st place. I thought the ribs and chicken were pretty good, but the judges disagreed. Pork was also a salvage effort as that got crushed with the briskets while we napped. Can you say pork mush?

Cooked with Troutman this time around.. lots of fun, loads of abuse, and got to meet a bunch of you guys.. Pig headed handed me a kick ass beer after a few shots of cabo friday afternoon... that was the start of a few laughs under the tent. I tried to get around to see everyone,(VA pirates, 3eyez, etc), but each time they looked busy or MIA... Cant wait for the next one... think thats coming up in june?

One highlight was sledneck going up to johnny trigg and asking him for armor-all so he can spray his crocks. Sicker thing is JTs buddy pulled out a spray bottle of the stuff and gave it to him.!

Staying overnight on Saturday was a no brainer.. no way I was gonna make the 6 hour drive intact. We took our time on Sunday and made it in 8 hours. We found this kickass breakfast place on 13. The Oasis - Homestyle cooking. Little truckstop that had farking awesome biscuits and sausage gravy, and a load of breakfast specials that filled us up for the next 6 hours. It was so good, I even considered going back there Monday. :) Anyone passes by there.. stop in and look for Claudia.

anyway.. Had great time for the first time out.. have an event this weekend, doing a few demos shortly after that and then into the season full bore.
