View Full Version : KCBS nepotism petition now online.

After reading all of the discussion regarding a proposed change in eligibility requirements to run for the board, more than once, I decided to make a petition available online. My intent is not to ridicule or challenge any member of the board, but to give them a clear indication of how the membership feels regarding this issue. While this issue is emotional for many members, I would ask that if you choose to sign this petition that any comments you may choose to add are courteous at a minimum. Prior to the next meeting of the board, when this issue will be brought back up, I will make the petition available to any and all members of the board.

Beyond providing your name, you will be required to provide your KCBS membership number or CBJ number. It is my hope that this will add to the credibility of this petition. The site also requires a valid email address, but you have the option of keeping that information hidden from public view as well as mine.

I'd ask that those of you that visit other forums let others know about the petition. Thank you in advance for the help.

Not to mention them further, but they have been requested to stop talking about it or get removed from the board.

I've contacted Mr. Basso to clear it with him first. He's made his feelings pretty clear about some of the previous discussion related to this issue. I'd rather ask permission in this case, instead of forgiveness. It's his forum, and he is entitled to run it as he chooses.

In addition I'd appreciate anybody willing to volunteer to make the post providing the link on those sites. The more tenure you have, the better.

I believe that if the BOD thinks we need a nepotism policy for the BOD then we certainly need rules about married Reps. There's far more chance of some impropriety at a contest with 2 reps than at a BOD meeting with 12 members. Voting for a nepotism policy for the BOD without looking at all aspects of this issue could result in a precedent that would cause the KCBS huge problems. There are many excellent husband and wife Rep teams and I have been extremely happy with them and believe that they would always act in an ethical manner. That statement also applies to BOD members.

Note: I totally spoort married rep teams and we need them to survive.

I dont get it. Are we the only forum that allows this petition? i saw it on other forums, in very fair and well worded posts, and they have all been removed.

this is something of importance, and regardless of which side of the fence your on, I think its important to allow the membership to speak. Any vehicle possible to allow the BOD to know the mindsets of the members should be utilized.

Not trying to start debate.. its just something I don't get.

Shhhh... Be very very quiet... It's been on that other forum for almost 24 hours without it being deleted... Good job Jeff. 8-)

I had inquired to that Forum if I could post a link last month and was basically told that he didn't want to take sides on the issue. So I just let it go. It was also in contrast to the "poll" that was going on at the same time is all I could think.

Phil,

It's on the MABBQA forum also. Thanks for allowing it to stay on here. I too thinks it's important for all to see, so discussion can be held whether you're for or against the proposal.

There were 3 others. I saw them there last night, this morning they were gone.

I understand the need for moderating, keeping peace, playing fair, etc..

however, IMHO, this IS an important and somewhat official topic. The posts i saw were all authored by different people(I asuume) and were well worded, not to take sides, but to direct people to the petition if they so desired. then poof.. gone..

like i said, not debating.. just a little baffled.

To answer a few questions.

Every member of the board was provided a link to the petition right after it was created. I will be making it available to each board member, as promised, later today.

I sent emails to forum owners or moderators for sites that I knew of, or some of you sent to me. Total silence. Sitting here looking at my list, I see that I missed NEBS on Yahoo. I cleared that post in advance, but apparently it fell through the cracks and I didn't get the post made. Special thanks to Scottie for taking the time to have that conversation.

One of my favorite things about this forum has always been that it stands alone. This is the second time recently that a thread has included discussion and criticism of another forum and I don't like it.

Ray is a friend of mine and is entitled to run his forum any way he wants. Why does anyone here care?

Oh yeah, the National BBQ News Forum sucks too.

I deliberately have not mentioned any names. But the BBQForum still has the thread running (http://www.rbjb.com/rbjb/rbjbboard/messages/640935.html). So it was not one that deleted the stuff.

The board is meeting tonight. It is on a lot of other forums with long discussions... All that is being said is I find it astonishing that some forums would take down something that is an 'Official' BOD agenda topic. Not a flame war, but a meeting agenda item.

ique
03-12-2008, 12:37 PM
He can run it anyway he wants.

Also, I see no problem with people questioning the way he chooses to run that forum.

You certainly cant discuss Rays moderating approach on that forum.

The reason its come up here a few times is because a more open exchange is allowed.

This thread is getting sidetracked.

What ANY other forum owner, admin, or moderator does is their business. Those debates and discussions belong someplace else. If a member of this site wants to go someplace else and complain about what goes on here, that's up to them. Having been a moderator here, I know that I would be less than appreciative if I hadn't been given the opportunity to address any problem here first.

My .02, and hopefully the end of this discussion in this thread.

With the issue now resolved, I'm closing the petition and hoping that this issue will rest in peace.

First, I want to thank each of you, for your support, and most importantly, taking the time to write to the Board of Directors, to express your opinion, on what I believed to be an important fundamental issue, of preserving the members right, to vote and elect those individuals, whom they believed would best represent their views and the best interest of Kansas City Barbeque Society.

During the past month we received in excess of 250 e-mails and a petition with over 100 signatures, expressing their desire to maintain the right of the members, to vote for the candidate of their choice without restriction.

After a lengthy debate at the Board Meeting last evening and a procedural vote to stop debate, which was not approved, the author of the motion, the second of the motion, withdrew the motion ending debate and concluding this matter before the Board.

I am please to inform you, that the Board listened to its members. This was a distraction from BBQ and we are pleased that we can put this issue behind us, and move on to the issues of sanctioning the greatest BBQ Competitions in the world.

Thank you again for your support and your time.
Sincerely yours,

Merl Whitebook
