Ok folks, for you know what and giggles.. If you had to pick only one comp to do next year, what would it be?? (not including Jack, Royal...)

HARPOON ! ! ! ! !

...followed closely by Lake Plastered... or Oinktoberfest... or Salisbury...

I can never pick just one.

For me in Michigan it would have to be the Silver Lake comp, best one in Michigan IMHO.

Jason - Since we have only done 2 that's a hard one for us. I'm thinking Dover because it's big with lots of tough competition. Or maybe Salisbury, MD because it's the earliest we can get to. I notice that you didn't say what your is.

The Amazin' Blazin' in Lebanon, Tennessee. Great setting, great hosts and a great field of competitors.

River City Smokehouse

That's a tough one since you're in the NE and I'm in the mecca of contest land. For me, it would have to be the Capitol City Cook-Off right here at home. I don't think I could do just ONE though. I only got to do three last year and that nearly killed me.

If I was limited to one, it would be either the Great American BBQ or Blue Springs, MO

Since you exclude the Royal, I would agree with Jeff and take the GAB on Memorial Day weekend.

Harpoon, but I haven't been to New Holland yet. It's hard to beat a contest in a great location, with great teams, where they GIVE you beer.

My vote goes to New Holland as well. A great location, super relaxed atmosphere and extremely well run. For those with families, it's good in that regard too.

Well, Chris can come out to BBQlossal and I'll head to Harpoon. There are many great contests. Amazin' Blazin' in Lebanon, TN is one that I would like to get too soon. I've asked Ray for years about his favorite event and he always answers the same. Having now met Wanda, Christina and Mary Ann, those ladies obviously put on a great show. Okay, I've talked myself into it - Lebanon, TN if I can only go to one!

For those going west, I would pick

Boats, Blues & BBQ in Pueblo, Co.

Great contest, great prize purse, great vending, beautiful atmosphere, and great organizers.

For me it would be Illinois State BBQ Championship (http://www.ilstatebbqchampionship.com/) in Shannon, IL. It's fairly close to home, the site is flat and easy to get around, it attracts a lot of the "big names" and is run by Mike and Theresa Lake, two of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Ray... you should wander north for this one next year.

Whatever one I can get a GC at! :-D

Limited exposer here so I would say, New Holland. Have never done it or been there but seems to be very popular.

Since I live in Dayton, I would have to support my local comp, the Ohio Veterans BBQ Cookoff.

I have only done four but If I could only do 1 it would be NEWHOLLAND, nice place!

Berks was a nice area but hard to get to.

BelAir, probably had the most spectators(by far)

I"d pick New Holland, great organizers, great location, oh and its falls on my birthday weekend,,lol.. Dover would be a close second pick, with the exception to the wind..

White Dog BBQ
12-31-2007, 06:46 PM
I haven't competed there yet (but I really hope to this year), but New Holland would be my pick. It's probably the premier contest in the Northeast, and it's very close to my home town.

I thought Yardley was really nice last year -- great location, good organization, easy to get to.

I'd have to go with New Holland, as well. I love the organizers, the 1 day, six category format, the big ol' trophies. Battle of the Brethren is a very close second though!

Tough choice?? I think I might chose Bel Air, MD since it was the first one I cooked in (with another team). Good crowds, decent music. I wouldn't mind cooking New Holland.

Will new holland mail out applications if you compeated this year past or do you have to re apply. I was on the waiting list until the first of august and then got in, I wonder will I have to re apply and get on the waiting list again or will I get an application, just wondering.

If you were there last year, you will have first shot this year, Mel said that at the cooks meeting. He also mentioned a longer perior to get you fees in if you wish to hold your spot. 72 teams and no more can compete.yes, I remember hearing about that, we will take any cheers we can get!

The best run, most enjoyable contests I have been to would be West Point, NE (when Rich Sterling ran it) and McLouth, KS.

If picking just one, I would choose Shannon, IL and/or the QLossal in Des Moines. Hope to make it to at least one of them this year.

Nobody can pick just one. Even if I couldn't afford but one, I would go to them all and either assist or just hang out.

Grand Rapids MI is home so I guess it but Silver Lake MI is a more cooker friendly contest. GR has worked on their problems and last year was better. Now if only they would get power (union problems I think).

I think MT Vernon IL may be the best run one that I have been to. Shannon IL is tops.
