Those look great. What's the difference between the slathers? The one on the right looks pinker than the other one (in the pulled pics).

the one on the left I soaked overnight in A&W root beer, shortly before smoking I dried, slathered and rubbed. the one on the right I injected and rubbed the night before. Both have a mustard slather and same rub. Both turned out great and were huge hits with the in-laws.

Just curious, what did the root beer do for the butt? Does it add flavor or tenderize or both?

To me it imparted a slightly "bolder" taste to the eat. It was really good, just a little different. I dunno if it tenderizes the meat in anyway. I was at Wal*Mart the night before and seen A&W on sale. I remembered a thread that someone had mentioned this so I thought "fark it, why not".

The one on the right was the all around fav. It was rubbed and injected the night before. My MIL started mentioning things coming up, i.e. birthdays, Christmas, New Year etc. saying those would be good times to make more or even smoke a few gobblers. Maybe I'm starting to hit my stride with "Q" thanks to you guys!
