I did my first 3 contests without being a member, then took the judging class and became a member. At that contest we got a call. Hummmmmm.

But anyway, I can't answer the question because I only became a member about 2 months ago, but I plan on renewing every year.

As I mentioned earlier, I renew, but if I was not competing or judging, IMO I have seen little value in what KCBS brings to the to the average member who does not plan to compete. There may be good reasons and benefits, but if so, I don't think KCBS does a good job making them known. Some may say it's to support barbeque as a whole, which is great but you could just as easily spend $40 supporting BBQ at a real good BBQ joint or on some BBQ supplies, rubs or sauces from a small company.

It takes money to run an organization

Organization for organization's sake isn't much of a justification.

Well, lets put it this way. The KCBS is supported mostly by membership fees. If it ever came to the KCBS ever going away due to lack of membership fees, so would the vast majority of BBQ contests since the KCBS is the largest sanctioning board in the US. What does the KCBS do for a contest? Contest reps are sent to run the contest portion of the event for you. Not the water or electricity type stuff. They inspect meat, organize the judges, run the judging and culminate the data to determine the winner. Thats alot of stuff to make sure the contesting is done properly. Oh, almost forgot, we renew every year.

Bentley,

I remember you had some issues with the KCBS. Have you ever considered running for the board of Directors so you can solve those problems?

I always renew it, after you read it, it also makes a great table covering for your next BBQ catering gig.

I renew. It's my small contribution to further the sport of BBQ. Without the KCBS, I would be a whole lot richer and have more time on my hands so I feel obligated.

Ditto..... I have my reasons, and will leave it at that.

If you really have to know, send me a pm or email.... but not here.

And you do NOT have to be a member to compete in the competitions.

Just my 2 cents
Call me a hard ass if you want BUT?

Wouldn’t it only make sense for the KCBS to require all participants be members (cook teams / judges) most large organizations require membership for participation privileges right?

One solution and a benefit to join would be. Give a small discount say 10.00 on each entry fee with proof of membership. All others pay full price with the extra 10.00 going to the KCBS.

I do renew (actually have the envelope with me today...) because I believe in what KCBS does as an organization to promote barbeque, to foster the competition community and provide a consistent basis for teams to know that there is a relatively even playing field of rules, judges and expectations. KCBS also supports Kooker's Kare and other causes which I think are commendable. Is it perfect? No. Few things in life are.

I don't compete and may not ever do it, but I enjoy the bullsheet for a quick read and a glance at the ads, but ultimately, I support their mission more than anything else.

I just did.

I've spent my whole life sending money to DU and NRA because they support other areas of my life that are important. KCBS is the same as far as I'm concerned.
