It is getting truly scary how many new bbq joints are opening up on Long Island. What I would have given to have a quarter of them around 5 years ago.

Well, another restaurant opened two weeks ago in Seaford (1/2 mile west of 135 on Merrick Rd). It's called Smokey's Original Rib Pit Barbeque. The restaurant is a sit down/takeout/delivery place that has been open 2 weeks.

First thing noticed? Lack of parking. Second thing noticed? Crazy, crazy busy.

I got take out and enjoyed the food at home. While I was waiting for the order I spoke with the owner. It seems that they do not smoke their meats onsite, the chef is not very forthcoming about how the food is produced (seriously, the owner said the chef won't tell them things like what sort of wood is used to smoke with) and the owner didn't know what type of sauce they had. I asked if it was vinegar or tomato based and he seemed perplexed. I told him that if it was red, it was tomato based.

In spite of the rush, the staff seamed very friendly and the owner/host was gregarious. I received my order fairly quickly. The owner forgot to charge me and I forgot to pay, so I got half a block away before I realized what happened and went back. Oh well, no biggee.

The pulled pork was tasty and had a nice texture. An underlying taste of apples (cider vinegar?). Unfortunately there was no smoke flavor. I asked for sauce on the side, but they forgot the sauce entirely.

I tried the creamed spinach as my 'side'. It was a little bland, but ok. Oddly, it tasted a bit like creamed corn.

All in all I would say that it merited another visit before I form a firm opinion.

The meal cost 9.50 and included a pickle.

From everyone I've talked to about this place, they have no credibility and nothing more than a grill to re-heat.

I don't think I'd waste my money or my time going there.

Huh, that's odd. I specifically asked the owner if it was a franchise and he said no. I was suspicious as the menu seemed to claim otherwise. Strange.

Thanks for the heads up!

The lack of a smokey taste was a warning, but I was hoping that if they didn't smoke on the premises than they had a smoker elsewhere and brought it in from that location.

Sad to see a place that's not true bbq doing that well.

I pass by this joint at least twice a day and never has anybody inside except for the owner sitting behind the bar staring out the front window. Directly across the street is the busiest Diner that i have ever seen It must be so depressing for the owner to be staring at the non stop action at he diner and all of the people waiting a min of 30 ,imutes for table. He is probably sitting there hoping that he gets a customer who decided that they cant wait for a table at the diner. Then they eat his crappy food and thnk to themselves they shoulf of waited at the diner.
