Final contest for the year for me is Dover. $20K in prizes is sweet, but even winning a few bucks for gas would be cool too. I'm just looking forward to the event based on what others have told me.

I know Pigheaded will be there, not sure yet about Sledneck... anyone else ?

At New Holland, I heard rumors of anywhere from 48-120 teams signed up. my guess is 48 signed up already with a max of 120 team capacity. Can anyone confirm ?

I will be going with my wife as she spends a few days in the hotel & casino relaxing & celebrating her birthday. Will arrive Thursday afternoon & park the trailer in the hotel parking lot until contest check-in Friday AM. Obviously in late Oct, the weather can be a crapshoot, but are there any other activities at the contest ? Bands ? Vendors ?
Anything to keep my wife from spending too much cash at the hotel/casino and mall while I'm cooking....as the hotel bill is enough !! After contest ends Sat afternoon, we will spend the evening at the hotel/casino for her birthday and go home in the AM.

We'll be there again this year, Heard from Tom Christine at New Holland at that time there were 38 teams confirmed so far. They had all kinds of things going on last year on saturday, Octoberfest , world's largest crab cake, different kinds of dancing, just remember seeing hula dancers. Good size car show down on pit road. I definately remember it being extremely windy friday all and day and night. The casino usually had a concert friday night you can buy tickets for. Its a great event overall, Fred Bohn from the casino and his crew take good care of everyone. Stop by and say howdy, We'll be flying our Dale Sr. flag.

Nope, its 63 and my sheet looks the same, the numbers seem faded from 53 on up. Thats why I called over there in the first place, I thought they had us all by our lonesome out there in #63, but Melinda assures me that whole side is filled. While I was at it, I thought I'd ask about the turn-in times. She said she would check on it. The other thing I wanted to check on from someone from last year was , is there a breakfast Saturday morning, or if not, is there anywhere to get breakfast? or do I need to add that to my shopping list? I will let you know if I hear anything on the turn in times.

Steve, depending on what you're towing, you should be able to fit your car onsite. Each site has a concrete pad on which NASCAR teams park their buses as well as a grass strip.

Jon, Your new logo does look good. He does a great job and is awesome to work with. We must have done about 10 revisions - probably drove him crazy. He will make an icon for you (just the picture without the name) if you want to use that as an avatar instead..??

Dover has us confused too. Wonder why they're changing things. I just hope that they make it clear if they make any additional changes. As for the judging area, I think they're going to have it a little more centrally located this year.

Oh, I see what you mean. I would call Melinda and ask - then you'll know for sure what options you have. Brian judged Dover last year and where we parked wasn't too far from the sites - but it's a different story when you have to lug stuff. If you have to park outside the site area, I would suggest packing up as much as you can in the morning and just keeping the bare minimum stuff at your site. -- good luck and we'll see you there.

That letter was weird, but I did not think much of it as I am staying in the hotel on Thurs night.

I really can't imagine that they expect all 81 teams to arrive and check in by 9:30 on the first day of the contest that does not contain grilling events on Day 1.

Someone needs to call or e-mail Melinda or Fred tomorrow to confirm..

I spoke to Melinda right after I received the letter, she said the letter is talking about Saturday. She told me that we could come and go anytime on Friday. After I hung up with her, I began to think, when can we leave on Saturday, is there any limitations about leaving? as in, right after the awards? I will be calling her back on Monday for some clarification.

Congrats to all who walked. There were 84 teams there. We got a strong front come through Friday night that played havoc with more than a few team sites. One teams smoker was blown over and the food was ruined. I dont know which team it was, but they packed up and left. Our motto is We Survived Dover '07.

We saw a lot of old friends and made some new ones and our team worked harder and more cohesively together than ever before and we overcame a devastated site. WE were proud of our entries and the family and friends who show up to cheer us one. What else could you ask for.

Congrats to all that were called to the stage. This was the forth contest of our rookie year and the last for the season for us. We have met many great folks along the way. After Friday nights storm and the ensuing damage, it was great to see teams helping others clean up and try to restore their sites. I am glad no one was hurt. At least physically, I know with the cost of easy ups some are hurting in the wallet. It is very nice to be associated with such a fine group of competitors. We have had a great time this season and look forward to meeting more of you in person next year.

George, here's a pic for you. Congrats on the walk.
Sorry I didn't get a chance to stop by. I was talking to a team I thought was you and they said you were next to them.

Thanks Ron, I didnt get aound much, it seemed like I was behind all weekend. Then to top it off, while towing my trailer home, my truck started to loose tranmission fluid. I had to leave it in a park and ride in Middletown. Another team member was behind me and was able to hook up and haul us home, I am not looking forward to this tow and repair bill!!!!!

Sorry to hear about the vehicle problems. At least you got some cash to help offset the bill. See you around next year. I live in Middletown, do you need anay help?

Just got home (stayed in hotel overnight).

Decent contest (prize money and depth of teams was good) but it certainly was not my favorite contest as far as venue. Maybe I need to be a NASCAR fan to appreciate it more. There were no hiccups but as far as being contest friendly, except for check-in, not one person from Dover Downs came around to see how teams were doing from what I saw. Luckily Pigheaded told me where the ice was located. Would have even thought after the huge windstorms someone would have come around later that night or in the AM to see how the teams were or if anything was needed. Not a big deal but porta potties were all in one place along with ash/grease bins. With 84 teams, would have been nice to spread it out a bit more.

I was satisfied with my turn in's and thought they were really solid product, but came in 21st out of 84. Oh well...there will be next time.

Cooking solo wasn't fun either... A chitload of work. It helped to prep in advance but my timing was off on a lot of things that are much easier to manage with more than one person. Did not get to wander around too much because I was alone but it was great to be next to Ron (Pigheaded) and his crew who are all great and very helpful when I needed a hand. Got to see some other friendly faces like IQue and Lost Nation for a little while too.

The windstorm at night was crazy, but somehow I managed to hang onto my canopy before it got destroyed like many others.

Other odd thing... black turn in boxes. Could have just been the color, but I couls swear that they were slightly smaller in dimension than usual.

Sorry to hear about the truck George. I didn't get a chance to shake your hand after awards Jack had a cating gig he had to go to so we booked out of there. Great Job on the brisket and an awesome showing overall. You guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with !! I just gave my father his treat and he says thanks ! Now about that brisket...

Vinny - The lids on the black boxes were more shallow than usual, which made them look smaller. Had to make sure the meat didn't pile up too high. They were also a tad lighter.

George - I've got a few other photos of you from the awards. I usually only put up a few of the teams, but generally take more. email me with your address and I'll send them to you

Lost EZUP #3 this season. I've never experienced weather like what rolled through Dover Friday night. Wow! My camp was leveled, the only thing left standing were my Backwoods/gurus chugging along at 240* through the whole thing. All the non-RV teams should be proud of their calls.

Was great to hang next to George, like Vinny I cooked this one solo, George's crew were a great help. It was a lot of work but I had a blast.... Next stop Jack Daniels!!!

Our motto is We Survived Dover '07.

I thought we agreed on "We were blown in Dover '07"...guess we need to keep it family friendly.

Had a great time in dover, with the excpetion of friday nights wind storm. Thought we managed to save our canopy,, but when we put it up yesterday it wasn't too good.. Oh well.. I like some of the slogans some of you came up with, I was thinking t-shirts " I survived the winds of Dover" or something like that. congrats to all that got calls. And to all the made it through the storm. \

Didn't care too much for the black boxes,, things just didn't look right when you've never used them before. Heard some judges complaining about the wind during judging, and how the food got cold, if they don't change that for next year, think I'll work on what tastes best when cold rather than fresh off the cooker.

Also, there was suppose to be a representative from the casino/hotel around to see if the teams needed anything, and I saw noone, had to ask another team about the ice, had people asking us where the ash and grease was suppose to go. Then after the storm, no one check to see if everyone was ok or needed anything. There can be improvements in those kind of areas, but that's my opinion. I'm glad the noone was seriously hurt. And more than likely I'll do it again next year. So congrats to all the survived,,,,

Steve, thanks for the kind words, yes, the truck incident knocked a little edge off of what started out as an enjoyable ride home. I am glad that package made it back home with you, I was a little worried they might have been delt with in Phili before you got airbourne! Congrats on the pork call. Now about that brisket...I will have to check with my mentor before I say anything:wink:

Congratulations to all of those who got calls. I was really happy for those who won. I know it's real exciting, especially after all of the work and money that goes in to a competition. We were a little surprised at a few of our scores, including our best which was 16th in chicken - I thought our ribs were at least that, but only got 61st - maybe the number got transposed somehow… : ). I was very surprised by that. Something does need to be done about the judging area. The food just gets too cold being in the wind like that.
There are a few suggestions we will make to the organizers, although they were really nice people to work with and very accommodating. We stayed at our site on Saturday night also. There were about 4 others who stayed as well. That made it nice to get a good night sleep before towing the trailer and smoker home. One thing I'm going to suggest to whoever it matters to is for the organizers at any event to have a weather alert of some type when there is bad weather expected like that. This way people can be a little more prepared to handle it. That tornado or wind storm, whatever it was could have really had some tragic results with all of the campers there and fire from the smokers.
It was nice to see everyone and next time we hope to get around to visit a little more. Since we were so far from everyone, we really didn't get to visit with people like we wanted to.

Our awning on our trailer is a total loss…and we had a few marks on the trucks and our camper where things blew in to them. I thought for sure those bleachers were coming at us or our trailer/camper was going to be flying through the air with us holding on to it. I would swear it was a tornado - did you all hear the freight train sound of it? It started as sounding like it was just really heavy wind going through the bleachers, but then the freight train noise got closer and closer and then all of the sudden the wind just slammed in to us and bent the awning about 5 feet to the front of the camper. It stayed attached to the camper and was like a huge sail. Chairs and whatever wasn't held down just went flying. We were on the front end of the sites (site 67), right on the corner of what I now call tornado alley….with no buffer. We had our banner (11' x 2') on pvc pipe, the pvc pipe goes over 1/2" rebar that was in the ground about 1 foot. The banner stayed on the pvc pipe with the bungee cords, but the rebar was bent!!! and pretty good - I swear. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I didn't see it!!! That wind bent the rebar. I keep saying it, but thank God no one was hurt physically. The scariest part was not knowing how long it was going to last or how bad it was going to get….and the noise where we were was just so loud!

Hey Vinny,

What am I, chopped liver? I enjoyed being next to you and appreciate your help. I must say I never imagined having to deal with a windstorm like that.

I really enjoyed the event and thought that it was pretty cool, all things considered. Late October is a risky time for holding an event but it seemed to work out. Next year, though, I'm renting a camper. The heck with the canopy.

Erik

P.S. I did find out I can either get a replacement frame or parts for my canopy.

Kinda like this one........ There is a website that has doppler radar scans from the last 5 days. If you go to http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/radar/, put in End Date of 20 OCT 2007, end time of 0500UTC, and loop last 2-3 hours, you will see the line of storms that went through and missed us. We were lucky compared to 50 miles north of us.
