Hello!

I would appreciate it greatly if you could let me know if you were interested in judging at this KCBS sanctioned event. It is being held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22.

Please drop me an email at saberinc@optonline.net.

I need your full name, contact info and whether or not you are a kcbs certified judge.

Thank you!

Eric Devlin

I wanted to leave a quick note for competitors about this event.

The BBQ and Grilling competition is part of the Sayville Fall Festival, which is replete with family oriented activities. If your 'team' usually consists of younger family members, please keep this in mind. Costume contests, parades, etc.

Thanks,

Eric

Eric, I've checked out the Sayville Chamber of Commerce and can't find any info on the Fall Festival. Do you know of anything online that provides info overall on the festival? I'm sure it would be of interest to those interested in the Competition.

Eric,

If you are in need of Judges, I would hold a pre-event CBJ class.

I believe that someone unrelated to this event is in contact with Linda Mullane and is organizing a judging class around the beginning of October. If I get more info (or confirmation) I will let you all know.....

Hello all. I have one more trip to Va. Beach next week and then I hope to be back in circulation. This summer has been pretty much a no go as far as BBQ judging for me because of my Mom's illness but it looks like after this next trip I should be able to get involved again. So I plan on judging at this event. If I can help in any other way somebody please let me know.

Thanks Rich, not that we are anywhere near Team of the Year. Maybe some day. Not to throw a monkey wrench in the mix, but I though I heard Tom Christine say that Downstate NY was MABA territory.

MABA will have a significant presence at BBQ competitions throughout the region it serves (DE, MD, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, WV). We will be doing the "Competitor's Breakfast" on Saturday morning at many of these events, sponsoring Iron Chef contests, and providing an information booth. The State Cup program is also progressing well.

Is it possible that they both sanction it?

BBQchef33
09-02-2007, 02:44 PM
The event is scheduled during the Sayville Fall Festival. Its a yearly tradition and i think scheduled around halloween. Not sure if its all week, or just a weekend, but they have vendors, a halloween parade, a costume party, stuff for the kids, a carnival(which I believe is next to the the baseball field where we will be.) Its a big todo in the town. So.. that being said.. Willy didnt have much to say into the date.

If you're towing a smoker, you'll need to stay off parkways. Following is the reverse of how we get to New Paltz:

1) Thruway south to Newburgh-Beacon exit.
2) 84 over the Newburgh-Beacon bridge to 684 at Brewster
3) 684 south to 287 east
4) 287 to 95 south to NYC to I-295, Throgs Neck Bridge
5) Follow signs to Clearview Expressway as you come off the bridge
6) Clearview to LIE (495) East
7) LIE to exit 59 Ocean Ave
8) South on Ocean Ave. It will turn into Lakeland Ave after the intersection with Peconic Ave, Lakeland will turn into Railroad Ave at the railroad tracks in Sayville. Railroad Ave takes you right to the park, which is on your left after you cross the intersection with Rt. 27A, Montauk Hwy.

I'm new around here (as you can tell I'm sure) and this will be my first competition. Currently in the process of planning ahead and working on exactly how I'm going to approach this with things as basic as transportation :). I currently drive a Honda Civic so unless I can convince one of my SUV bearing friends I'll probably be the guy pulling up in the u-haul. Looking forward to a great time and meeting some new faces.

There is a New England team that shows up with half full subaru... people watch in awe. We're all trying to figure out how they do it... since we're all hauling more c/// around that you can imagine (I mean, do I really need 6 pairs of tongs? am I really so lazy that I will go through all six pairs rather than clean one pair? well... I guess I am)

That being said, there are several teams that rent uhauls... go enjoy your first contest, make sure to introduce yourself to people, and make some friends. Typically new teams will benifit a lot more in the long run from making friends at their first contest than stressing out about their food for 24 hours.

Remember to relax... its just bbq.

That's pretty funny, I was considering purchasing a Subaru specifically for the extra room to transport my bbq stuff . Alas, I do not fit as I am too tall.

I do alright now getting around in my civic packed with my 2 WSMs + food/coolers and all that other fun stuff. I think I convinced one of my knucklehead friends to come along so if we take two cars I should be fine. My biggest issue would be fitting the table and wash buckets in addition to all the other things I will need being that there isn't an available kitchen present.

Relax? It's just bbq? hehe I'll try to keep that one in mind

Willy,

When do you think the website will be updated? Things like directions for out of towners, prize fund, contest layout and activities would be helpful for prospective teams or judges to see. I'm not pushing anything but it may help. I have some web and HTML experience if you need help.

Guy,

If you have the tools (graphical HTML editor), any help would be terrific.

EVERYONE - aside from Guy's suggestions, any more??

Guy - PM me with your contact info and we'll see how we can get things going.

I saw a 10 x 10 EZ UP today at the hardware store, 129.99 no end of season discount :( I'm not stupid, I know what 10 x 10 should be, but man it does look a heck of a lot smaller in person than I expected.

I think I might splurge for something larger.

No wedding.. I'm a slacker. Maybe I can find one on the way... or do some vending when I stop to get gas along the way...

I don't need to worry about getting divorced over this either... the girlfriend said "Well, we might as well do both if we're going to drive down there" (fist pump from me)

Clint,
Just in case, sign the waiver. I got a call from the Chamber lady and faxed it back in.
Good luck with the birth to be.
But nice to know per Scott above that we will have a trained professional in the area.

Attention NY/NJ/CT and other regional folks:

I have attached a PDF flyer for the event. It would be great if you could print out a handful at work or home and hand them out to friends, family and colleagues. Or email them the link to the website:

Thanks for spreading the word!

Clint - thanks but for a few things:

1. Did you print and scan it to do the change? It looks that way and is now a much bigger file and is blurry.

2. If we want to keep it, the BBQ should be all caps.

3. This is a doc that the chamber created and I am not sure if we want to step on any toes.

Willie - waddya think?

Heres my try although it some how ended up being 3MB. I think the reason mine and SmokeInDaEye' look blurrier is that ours open up at 100% in adobe and the sayville one is scaled to 69% so it is compressed more.

Zero - unfortunately.

It IS blurry. I have 20 years of desktop publishing experience (support not creative as the website 1.0 proves), my eyesight is better than 20/20 and I eat carrots 3 times a week!!!:eek:

Just Kidding - When viewed side by side at 100% the modded one is blurry. No biggie as long as they get printed and distributed, who cares.

Clint - if you can, edit the URL so BBQ is in caps, re-post and can you edit and delete your original?

Thanks all.
