I'm headin down Texas way to finally get my pit that I have been so patiently waiting for 1 1/2 years to get:eusa_clap . I'm looking for any suggestions on BBQ along the way. I'm going from Jeff City, Mo to Big Cabin, OK and down to Dalls then 45 to Hounston, TX.
Chime in if you have any ideas for me.

River, most of my favorite Texas BBQ joints are West of your vector down I45 from Dallas, but I'm sure there are some good ones around Houston that I don't know about. There is, however, a good stopping spot halfway between Dallas and Houston called Woody's Smokehouse in Centerville, TX. Its got great smoked meats and cheeses all nicely vacuum packed. I usually get some Elk sausage and smoked cheddar. Good stuff. Here is the link:

Are you getting a Bates Pit? I got a small backyard offset from him that is about 2 years old. My buddy ordered a pit from him too, and it was right about when Bates started having problems. He's approaching two years, and still no pit. Glad to hear you're getting yours.

If you don't own it already, pick up a copy of "Legends of Texas BBQ" which is an excellent book. Many excellent joints are right along your route.

Also, the Texas Monthly put out a list of the Top 50 Texas BBQ joints, which is shown as a google placemark here:

Yes it is a Bates. i already have one but I 've been waiting for this one for 1 1/2 years. Yes I am finally getting it, sad to say I'm selling it. I don't need two. Here is the one I have. If you know anyone interested, I am looking to sell it too.

Burns BBQ in Houston is really good. That's where Dave Klose recommended me to go. It's cash and carry. Not the best part of town, but good Q.
